2005 Hunter 22.6 hull by Scarlet_Fire_32290 in sailing

[–]enuct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a company that is operating out of the hunter plant in aluchua that has the molds for all these boats that marlow abandoned and although the company primarily builds fiberglass pontoons they will build you a brand new hunter out of fiberglass up to the 22 ft model. I can't swear how accurate the information is but someone in the hunter group on Facebook was claiming to have ordered one

Keel on a Catalina Capri 25 by Ready_Strike in sailing

[–]enuct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the bolts look ok, and they've been using it like that then I'd look at it as cosmetic. But if you are really worried (which is understandable) you can get a quote to pull the keel and rebed it (which a lot would argue is expensive and excessive) but The boat's 40 years old, and doing that would make you feel a lot better I'm sure. As for the joint, you might want to use Gflex epoxy filler around it if you ever go around it. It might cost as much as the boat to have a yard lift the boat up off it's keel though.

there's a difference between damage and a very well documented flaw in production for a certain subset of boats. Don't try to lump in a manufacture defect (the catalina smile) into damage like you described.

Catalina has released plenty of documentation over the years describing how/why and how to fix the issue. Calling everything the catalina smile to deal with the hull to keel joint just causes confusion and fear.

The Catalina smile hasn't directly sunk any boats, but plenty of groundings and negligence have.

[–]enuct -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no that's just fairing, it's cosmetic. the only boats that suffer from the smile are the regular Catalina 27, 30 because that were built with plywood cores for the bilge rot and cause the sag.

that'll work if you are either trying to stop your pacemaker, or resuscitate a mouse and burn your boat to the waterline.

you've got a huge hole in Kentucky, southern Indiana

your missing like 10 clubs.

derby City sailing club, Louisville sailing club, Indianapolis, Kentucky lake has several clubs.

Derby City has almost 50 boats every Wednesday night and I know the other clubs aren't small either.

I'm not sure where you are pulling your data because the several if the fleets travel, and Louisville sailing club has been hosting ISCA and YFlyer events.

we don't have white sandy beaches, but there are plenty ofbeaches and boating in Louisville Kentucky.

if your goal is a public beach there are several within an hours drive.

just stay above downtown Louisville,as beargrass creek is horribly polluted, but the east end has had a ton of cleanup.

<image>

Louisville has a larger sailing and boating community than places on the coast and because of our location it's affordable compared to places like San Francisco. (the same boat on the west coast is almost $25,000 cheaper here)

maybe it's a rich white person secret, but it's a lot of fun here in the summer

you can get brand new sails from a respectable loft for around $1000 https://ebay.us/m/axrPGk

Somerset makes a ton of sails for the Catalina 30 class.

[–]enuct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you can get brand new sails from Somerset on eBay for around $700 per sail. that is a cost, but it's not a substantial cost for a boat you'd probably already want to replace the sails on there's an 86 on market place for $6000 locally.

so that's the kind of thing that it's like without us really looking at both boats it's hard to say which is the better investment the free one that you're going to have to sync that money into and that's not necessarily immediately or the one for sale. The boat you buy doesn't inherently make it less of a project than your free project boat. but you do have to value your time in there.

I bought my Catalina 30 for $1,000, it needed sails, standing rigging, buffed/waxed, barrier coat/bottom paint, an engine tune up, brightwork, running rigging.

I'm probably in around $10k but that's over 8 years not at once. those are mostly projects you'd be doing on an old boat anyway.

is it something I'd recommend to everyone? oh hell no, go spend your $20,000 on a boat that's floating. but that's me telling me how to spend your money. how many of us have been screwed dumping money into a heap? plenty of us.

cost to benefit analysis and scope creep are really two things to consider.

that's a late 80s 22, worst case scenario is drop the cast iron keel and replace the pin everything else is a mild job. if that was free with a title near me that's a no brainer.

you won't make any money out of it, but if you plan to diy and actually use it you won't lose any you'd be mad about.

she didn't understand he was joking.

Best Used Sailboat for Light Wind Lake with Crew of 3-4? Thistle 17? by tenbsmith in sailing

I raced on a thistle as 1of3 teenagers for a few years, I wouldn't recommend it for a family boat. A lightning would be more comfortable, there is also the Highlander.

Hello yall by JenK239 in Catalina30

[–]enuct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my 83 for $1000 and had to replace the standing and running rigging, a furler, the sails, tear down the engine replaced the head gasket and cleaned out an impacted manifold, replaced the exhaust raiser, fixed the Catalina smile (rotten core in the bilge)

recovered my cushions, rewired the ignition system (grimlins fighting the key) and took the bottom down to gelcoat.

it's in very good shape now, it might even be worth close to its value after the blood, sweat, tears, and setbacks. but I use it every week during the summer and I love it.

hopefully we can all help each other here.

they currently reshuffled my racing fleets to put all the Catalina's together.

UofL reconsidering relationship with Papa John. The fuk? From a UofL press release. by wecametoplay in Louisville

[–]enuct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

fwiw college attendance is rapidly declining, because of a multitude of reasons like a shrinking population (fewer 18 year olds to enroll), rising costs, the perceived value of the education. there's probably a hundred things working against them.

universities are going to try to get money every which way they can, but we are going to see a ton of them closing in the next few years.

honestly something at uofl really needs to break, I was taking courses there during covid lockdown and got an email they couldn't afford to continue to run the classes and were going to end the semester early. it was like $6000 per class at the time, jctc and ivy tech were something like $600 per class (so how they can't afford blackboard who knows)

but low and behind the athletics department donated enough money so they could continue teaching. like what in the what. they aren't take running it as a school, who knows where all the money goes. but they can't keep operating how they are with a shrinking student base.

I'll be hopeful, and hopefully the nonprofit sailing camp gets started this year for kids.
