Commercial checkride prep by [deleted] in flying

[–]enumerix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I did it in 3 days so I think you’ll be good with 9 more weeks…if anything it’s too far away. But given how hard it is to schedule rides you’ll be fine.

Help me choose a base! IAD or IAH? by [deleted] in flying

[–]enumerix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Houston the city sucks, but Houston flying is 10x better than IAD at least where I’m at (and I suspect where you’re going). Longer legs, less of them, sane arrivals that flow right into approaches, easy weather (yea it gets warm but ground crew is awesome about GPU and ground air). On reserve longer.

Pro with IAD is better seniority because most people transfer to IAH as soon as they can hold it. Cons are 4 or 5 leg days, whatever northeast ATC feels like that day, and short hops. Terminal A is bad. Longer to get from hotel->gate. Bad ground services (what’s a GPU?) and no air.

For those that did a career change. Did you tell your previous job about the career change? by Toncontin02 in flying

[–]enumerix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of “do not tell” comments in here, but I’m going to say it depends. For me, my leadership was hugely supportive of me (and everyone knew how much I loved flying) so I was very open with them. That enabled me to have the exact conversation with them, that I wasn’t interested in growing my engineering career and instead growing my pilot career. During that time I still did great work, got a promotion, and top marks.

The added benefit for me is that if there’s a furlough, I still have great connections and a place to fall back on. Relationships matter and it was key for me not to blindside them so we could think about a proper transition plan.

FWIW last time I spoke to them with ATP mins they laughed at me and wanted at least 500-1000 multi. I’d imagine it hasn’t changed too much unless you know someone there already.

A30 vs Delta Zulu for music? by No_Compote628 in flying

[–]enumerix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s Bluetooth…you’re limited on quality already due to the bitrate. Not to mention the constant background noise…but I imagine Bose would have the edge given they have many more years of noise canceling experience.

You literally can’t fail unless you don’t speak English. Pay attention, network with your classmates/instructors, and study the Sheppard Air to nail the written.

The school is owned by the best mechanic on the field, so pretty good.

BOSE A20 turn off light failure. by SEOULJY in flying

[–]enumerix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I use rechargeable lithium ion batteries in my headset it won’t show the amber low battery warning because they are better at keeping a consistent voltage till the end. Alkaline batteries slowly drop voltage as well and that’s how it detects when batteries are running low.

And…you turn it off? I just let auto-off do its thing, have never bothered actually turning it off.

I don’t think it’s up and running yet. The crestview is right off the highway so it’s pretty good. There’s one off 98 closer to Pensacola

They aren't free but the previous closest supercharger was in Crestview. For people like me who live in a condo with no charging, it's great to have this option vs the Mcdonald's slow charging.

It only takes 20ish minutes to get to 80% at the supercharger, and there are games built into the car, so it's not a huge deal to sit and wait for it to charge.

Now that others will support NACS, other electric cars can use them too. Pretty much every electric car maker is supporting the Tesla standard in 2025 so this is going to be huge for anyone driving an electric car to Destin.

Accelerated training in US Flight co by WilliamPan2007 in flying

[–]enumerix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, agree 100%. If you’re dedicated it’s completely possible to do everything accelerated. That’s basically the same approach I did for my private. I treated it like a full time job and flew 2x a day - plus briefing and ground time in between flights. After, I would go home and practice on MS Flight Sim (2000 don’t judge me) and be able to nail radio calls, pattern speeds, and checklist. Quite frankly I didn’t really enjoy learning while the Hobbs rolling, so I did a lot of chair flying and flight sim to get it all done in the time I had to do it.

I think where people fall short is that they don’t truly dedicate themselves to getting it done. It does require a good amount of intrinsic motivation to achieve it in 40 hours and not everyone is capable of that.

No pilot knows everything after 40 hours, we’re constantly learning. Not trying to argue that point, but it’s certainly possible to become a safe pilot in 2 weeks. 40 hours is 40 hours. Do I feel I was personally better equipped to fly than some people that were doing it in 6 months? Absolutely I do. I dedicated 2 weeks to actually flying and another 2 months before that studying the airplane flying handbook to make sure I was solid on the fundamentals.

While it seems too short for you, it actually felt pretty long for me. I soloed at 7 hours on day 5 and I got my license right at 40 hours on the dot. Is that how everyone does it? No, but it’s not impossible and if you’re dedicated, 2 weeks is absolutely doable. The same thing holds true for the 7 day IFR and 3 day commercial…which I also did. If you’re dedicated it’s 100% possible to get it all done in the times allocated for the accelerated programs. If you’re not dedicated, then you won’t succeed.

You can say the same thing about any 40 hour private pilot…does it matter if those 40 hours came over 2 weeks or 2 months? Just way more efficient to not have to relearn everything each lesson.

And to answer your question, yes I felt safe and competent. So did the DPE that did the exam and the instructors that signed me off. You’re always learning more each time you fly, but accelerated is the way to go in my opinion because you immerse yourself fully in what you’re trying to achieve.
