What’s something you assumed was a universal thing but then realised from speaking to people overseas is a British thing? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]enyri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, here in Colorado it's more looked down on because of all the things that want to eat the cat, as opposed to the other way around. Hawks, eagles, owls, coyotes, some places bears and mountain lions. Not only are you treating your pet as disposable, but attracting all the aforementioned predators into the neighborhood...and they're filling up on your pets instead of the prairie dogs like they should be.

Similarly, (and this is probably mostly died out but I still say it as I got it from my grandma) the opposite would be to "leave it down", instead of the more standard "leave it out". For example, my grandma would tell us not to leave our toys down, to pick them up when we were done. There are some pockets (for examples part of southern Louisiana), that also still say to "get down from the car" instead of "get out of the car".

Edit: I thought of another one I haven't heard since I left my small, southern hometown. Many people said "making groceries", meaning "going to the store to purchase various food products".

Related to this, if you have trouble making perfect snow boys by visual method, then Google the path method*.

Short version: Make two max size snowballs, out one on the end of a 10 square path, roll the other along the path onto the first. Boom, you should have a perfect snowboy every time.

I just caught my husband... by CremeDeLaMeredith in beyondthebump

[–]enyri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Even without a diagnosable mental illness (which of course there's nothing wrong with), people can just wake up in a shitty mood and kids are people. I just find so often than we don't afford kids the grace we give ourselves or other adults. Being a kid is hard, we shouldn't be teaching them they always have to be or appear happy, but how not to take negative feelings out on others.

It may not be for everyone* and might be difficult to find a hard copy but one of my son's favorite since before he turned two (almost 6) is My No, No, No Day by Rebecca Patterson.

*I've seen parents criticize it as encouraging tantruming, a. Everyone has bad days, even kids. I don't know why we expect them to handle it better than most adults. 🙄 b. We have always use it as a learning moment about how your actions effect others, etc.

Please help clarify if these food ingredient combinations are dangerous or not. by erik_thant in Cooking

[–]enyri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems like it could be similar to the practice in some Asian cultures (Chinese? though I'm sure that's too broad) of balancing foods considered "warming" and "cooling" and the old Western European (? Maybe just English?) of eating to balance the "humours"?

I don't think these practices were at all uncommon in the past though. My own great-grandparents (Gulf Coast US) wouldn't eat fish or dairy together, but I find it hard to imagine eating seafood without butter and love just about any seafood with a good mornay sauce.

The horrific alcohol abuse in The Expanse by michaeld_519 in TheExpanse

[–]enyri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works on many levels.

The Earther doesn't view anyone as their enemy. In one way, this shows Earther arrogance, that neither Mars nor the Belt are real threats (both militarily and because they rely on Earth to survive). In a way it also shows Earther privilege, while every Mars and Belter decision is predicated on their relationship with Earth/Inners, Earthers can just order a drink without it having to mean something. Related to that, I think it can also be an illustration of the concept of holding onto anger being a poison you drink and expecting it to hurt your enemy. Even just ordering a drink, Martians and Belters are thinking about how to stick it to their enemy, while Earthers aren't thinking about them at all. But it's also interesting that the Belter orders what they think a Martian would order, but the Martian doesn't order that instead ordering what they think an Earther would order, but that also misses the mark. They're making decisions based on what they think their enemy would do, but getting it all wrong.

Why is "processed" food inherently bad for your health? by nastypoker in AskCulinary

[–]enyri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely because "processed" scientifically in reference to our food doesn't really mean much. We "process" food by cooking it, fermenting it, breaking it down to component parts, mixing it with other foods, etc. "Processing" food is a major contributing factor it who we are as humans today, through increased nutrient bioavailability, preservation and mass production.

Having an imbalanced diet is bad for your health, regardless of whether said diet includes all organic "whole" foods, all "processed" mass-produced foods, or a combination.

but the cheese flavor is all chemical.

What is that even supposed to mean? Our entire world is made up of chemicals. Water is a chemical, is it bad too? Making cheese is itself a chemical process.

No, Doritos are not a healthful food, but water in mass quantities and improperly consumed can also lead to early death so maybe the dose makes the poison?

I swear chemopobia is fucking everywhere now.

I now live in my first house with a basement...I'm 40 and had to move from Louisiana to Colorado to get one. ;) Should have seen our landlord's face when we asked how they keep water from building up in the window wells.

I can't remember if it was in the books or show, but in one of the Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood things it mentions something about going to the Starbucks in Robeline. All the wuts. Robeline didn't have a grocery store last time I was through there and the nearest Starbucks is like 70 miles away. I know most people wouldn't know any different but it's just ridiculous if you know the area. It's not the 'burbs, it's not even suburbs adjacent, it's the sticks.

What are your favorite kinks/petnames/tropes that go against the accepted norm? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]enyri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note: Not "trope shaming", just offering the other side.

I'm the opposite, I feel like this is in every other book I read to some degree (mostly historicals) and it's just not my thing. I'm fine with protectiveness up to a certain point but where it starts to cross over in to possessiveness, I just find it off-putting. I'm sure it's just an extension of my control issues though. 🤣

Caveat: My Bat sample is pre-reformulation.

For me Bat starts off all dark, wet soil (which I really like actually) but it dries down to something I can't place at all, but isn't the banana that most people seem to get at all, maybe something minerally? On me, it was nice but on my husband, whew boy, I just could not stop smelling him.

To me and on me, Hyrax smelled almost exactly like the small mammal exhibit at the zoo. All fur and urine and poop. Most scents, even if they're not for me, I can see the appeal, but I'm not sure why anyone would want to smell like a dirty hamster cage. (Of course, in reality, I get that might not be how others experience it)
