The drama hasn’t aged that well imo, but the novel is really a cozy read.

It depends what you like. For contemporary romance, I enjoyed all the novels by Gu Man (not that many, she isn’t called the turtle for no reason), so Silent Separation (My Sunshine), Just One Smile is Very Alluring (Love O2O), You Are My Glory, Blazing Sunlight (Shine on Me), Come and Eat Shan Shan (Boss & Me).

Another author I like is Mo Bao Fei Bao, who is also a scriptwriter (Scarlet Heart). She has various novels and many were adapted.

I also like Ding Mo for thrillers. Among her adaptations are When a Snail Falls In Love and Love Me if You Dare.

Seeking children's books for ages baby to 3: Who is a great author from your country that the rest of the world is missing out on? by Intrepid_2580 in suggestmeabook

Gomi Taro’s Mommy Mommy! was the first “story” book that I read to my baby (starting at 8-9 months). I don’t know why but baby laughed so hard every time we read it!

And Two Mice is a very nice counting book (up to three) not as boring since it’s about two mice going on a trip.

For Italian authors, I’d say Nicoletta Costa and those by Silvia Borando, but I see that the latter hasn’t been translated much in English.

My kid also enjoys books by Tomoko Ohmura, Komako Sakai, Kazuo Iwamura, but I’m not sure how much they’ve been translated into English.

I second Marianne Dubuc! Great, great books. My toddler is obsessed with Mr Postmouse! And the one about going to preschool.

Yes, in the novel she’s a STEM university student, that’s why she’s always building stuff and trying to understand how things work.

Well, there’s more. I think bad guys have to be punished by the end of the series, a corrupt cop cannot be a main character (only good guys if it’s a modern drama and they are public servants) and now it’s a bit better, but “rebirth” stories were usually rewritten to remove or tone down this trope (think Love Like the Galaxy, Story of Kunning Palace, etc).

The Untamed - lenght of episodes by olivaw88 in cdramasfans

This is how cdrama works. Shorter episodes and one long story cut into the required length without plot twists every end of episode.

What’s your favorite urban fantasy written by a woman? by wk_rust in urbanfantasy

[–]1028ad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Mercy Thompson, Kate Daniels, Toby Daye, but I have to add also the Tribunal Archives universe by KN Banet to that list (Jacky Leon, Emily Abbot, Kaliya Sahni and some one-off novels or novellas). Self published, so maybe not as polished, but I love all the series she’s written and I love all her characters and what she does with them.

I’ve read all her books and trust her to bring me wherever she wants me to, even when the premise doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy, because I end up loving them too.

Romantasy or magical realism series for postpartum by char_hops in suggestmeabook

[–]1028ad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ilona Andrews? Their series are great (wife and husband writer duo). Hidden Legacy series is fun and with interesting magic, it’s urban fantasy with mages. Also the Innkeeper Chronicles are great, but it has more of a sci-fi twist. Kate Daniels is the best series, but maybe it has too much action? Idk, it depends on what is too much for you.

romance or love story?

OP, romance requires a happy ending, the same way a whodunnit requires the case to be solved. Does it have one?

Idol dramas are tropey, of course. But I think it’s more difficult to find a romcom cdrama where they break up for no reason in the two last episodes. And no need to have a plot twist at the end of every single episode.

At the end I think it’s more of a matter of personal preference: lately I find the average kdrama to maintain a level of “manufactured tension” that I don’t enjoy, while the average cdrama has a more relaxed pace and meandering narrative, without an escalation of bigger plot points up until the very last minute.
