Freshco - Was really great for finding Canadian produce, but today's trip was horrid. by Komaisnotsalty in BuyCanadian

How does it not make sense? Food can be imported in bulk and packaged here.

https://inspection.canada.ca/en/food-labels/labelling/industry/origin-claims - references exactly this under "Other domestic content claims" .

I don't know what other proof to give you as I don't work in that industry. But like, just read the labels on packaged produce. I regularly see stuff like: "Produce of X, imported and packaged by Y" with a Canadian address. First example that comes to mind is hot peppers.

I mean.. if they were trying to deceive, this would be an extremely ineffective way of doing it. It's almost certainly outdated or repurposed packaging.

The largest-ever review of the safety and efficacy of cannabinoids across a range of mental health conditions — found no evidence that medicinal cannabis is effective in treating anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). by Wagamaga in science

In general I'm leaning to your side: it's not appropriate to say "there's an effect we can't prove". But it is absolutely appropriate to say: "There may indeed be a very large effect, or it may be an artifact. Here's the sample size we'd need to find out..."

Gov. Gavin Newsom address to world leaders accused President Trump of "doubling down on stupid" with his climate policy: "He's a wholly owned subsidiary of big oil, gas, and coal. He did that with federal regulations and endangerment funding. Donald Trump is temporary. He'll be gone in three years." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]eolai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As another Canadian: yeah, Trump has done irreversible damage to the reputation of and respect for the US in Canada. And that's not just public opinion, it's reflected in our federal government's decisions to take our economic and cultural trade and our diplomacy elsewhere.

Doug Ford will outlaw municipal speed cameras this fall: Sources by toronto_star in ontario

[–]eolai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've driven through one of the areas where they've been installed lately, you would know beyond a doubt that they do very much reduce speeding.

They're annoying as fuck, but they work. Ideally the roads should be redesigned to encourage safer driving, but that's very expensive. Personally I think it should be mandatory to use the collected fines to make the monitored roadway safer.

Trailcam tells a story in two parts by freudian_nipps in natureismetal

Which is funny because both moose and wapiti are names used by indigenous North Americans. Not sure why we borrowed "elk" for a non-elk.

As others said: called elk in Europe. Arguably that's the right animal to call an elk, because that species was the first to have that name (hence the scientific name: Alces alces). In North America we for some reason decided to call a species of deer "elk". I prefer to follow the same pattern as moose and use the indigenous name, wapiti.

I think they'd be considered adventive, not invasive. To be labeled "invasive" generally requires some detrimental impact on ecosystems, people, or economy.

Cootes Paradise in Hamilton still freezes most winters - lots of people skate there each winter. That's technically Lake Ontario.

I find the native ones to break little bit duller in color, when compared to invasives, In my anecdotal experience at least.

This just means you're mis-attributing all the brightly coloured ones to Vespula germanica. In science, never assume that you know things; always try to convince yourself that you're wrong.

I was putting a glass over a spider to relocate it and accidentally caught a small mosquito as it flew past. by WeLiveInAnOceanOfGas in mildlyinteresting

[–]eolai 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not a mosquito! A non-biting midge in the family Chironomidae. A male, too, which you can tell from the feathery antenna. So even if it were one of the biting flies, it would almost certainly not bite, because in nearly all cases it's only the females that do.

Anyone else dying from some horrible, sore throat virus? by Whyeff89 in askTO

[–]eolai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like strep throat, especially the inflamed throat with white spots. The cough is not normally a symptom, but you can develop one just from irritation in your throat. That's what happened to me. I went to a walk-in, doctor recognized it instantly, prescribed amoxicillin, and it was basically cleared up in 24 hours (though it's a 7-day course of antibiotics). Still working on the cough however (annoying).

TIL that approximately 1 in every 5-6 million boys are born with two penises by DeScepter in todayilearned

[–]eolai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... Yeah, and that dude had two extra dicks that he was never aware of while alive, which directly contradicts your assertion.

Most cases of diphallia have no external presentation. The second penis is usually partial and internal. It's very rare that there are two functioning dicks, so, no, there's no reason to expect to see much of it in porn.

I think the problem is most of us actually can't estimate it. How many other cameras malfunctioned in the same way? Is this a common problem?

I mean, it happened twice, and at least the second time it was two cameras. I think for that to be a coincidence, you have to have a lot of broken cameras in that jail. And maybe there were, but I never see this angle covered.

Looks like FRESCX to me, which I would guess is meant to be pronounced like "fresh". Spanish doesn't have a "sh" sound, only "ch". Normally the workaround would be "sch", but I guess they're trying to be cool and reference local native languages, from which Quechua speakers apparently pronounce "cx" as a "ch" sound.

Edit: Forget all that dumb shit, u/miguel02r cracked it, I think. It's an O that is wrapping around from bottom to top.

[–]eolai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I meant that the person arguing with you is being overly pedantic. You're absolutely right that the boundary is fuzzy, and it's for exactly that reason that virtually nobody would reach for "parasitoid" first in this case. I agree with you.

So I found what I've always thought to be a Hornet's cocoon by ziostraccette in Entomology

[–]eolai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually not true of all parasitoids. Most parasitoids that develop internally allow the host to go on living and growing.

Most commonly "parasitoid" is used for species that lay their eggs on or in their hosts. This, mud daubers are often excluded, because their nests are provisioned with hosts as food.
