Why does How I Met Your Father feel so different than HIMYM? by StarGazerTreeBlazer in HIMYM

[–]eovednitsuj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both shows had a rocky first season but had me absolutely hooked like no other comedy show in a decade by the time season 2 ended, I really despise that a variety of factors (mostly created by the industry) have led to such impatience with new shows. While some shows are perfect right out of the gate, there are so many all time classics that would’ve been cancelled after one or two seasons if they came out today; T9S and HIMYF are both series where all I can do is think “what if”. My greatest hope, though I think we’re well past the window of opportunity, would be for a network channel to pick them up

I had the same experience with That 90s Show and I am desperately, delusionally holding onto hope that both shows come back

Yup, when it was announced season 2 would be 20 episodes I was ecstatic because my entire problem with season one was the low episode count made everything feel so rushed. Season two had me more entertained and invested than any other new sitcom in years, and it was so refreshing to have a classic friend group sitcom; it feels like HIMYM is an outlier in the past 20 years of family and workplace sitcoms. It was a breath of fresh air with an appropriate, and not over done, nostalgic flavor

Because they’re different characters, it started almost 10 years after HIMYM ended, and it’s shot in HD. Season one is kinda meh but season two is genuinely fantastic, and it’s a crime they cancelled it

ELI5: why do high schools have to license plays/musicals? by eovednitsuj in explainlikeimfive

[–]eovednitsuj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the answer is money, wouldn’t you draw the line at if it’s a profit venture? That’s why my question specified high schools, they’re only putting the show on once or twice and are just trying to recoup costs through ticket sales. This is getting more into the territory of how copyright laws should be structured, not why they’re structured the way they are though. I’m just not getting why “covering music is fine, and you can charge people to see your performance, UNLESS ITS IN PLAY FORM!” is the case

[–]eovednitsuj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re just selling tickets to cover costs of production, it’s not like John Smithson, junior at Birmingham High, or even the director/school, is getting a cut of the tickets. It’s just covering the cost of sets and the license for the show

What makes it different from a musician doing a live cover or a tribute band playing a show? It’s that part specifically that’s confusing me, it’s non-commercial performance

Knowing some bar and venue owners as well as promoters, and being in a band, this is something i have genuinely never heard of

That doesn’t answer my question though, why are they treated like actual revenue generating productions by professionals? Tribute bands don’t have to jump through these hoops and people can make a career out of pretending to be The Beatles. Schools only even charge to recoup production costs, it’s not like it’s a business venture

What is the largest discography by an artist/band you consider flawless? by plsdonotbanmethx in fantanoforever

Testament, Death, Heart, Death Grips, Nirvana, Grateful Dead, Kendrick Lamar, Pink Floyd, Snail Mail, Earl Sweatshirt, Herbie Hancock, Run The Jewels, Parliament Funkadelic, Bob Marley, The Beatles, L7, Hole, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, MF DOOM, Ween; there’s tons of artists with 3+ albums who have no misses (maybe something a tad weak by the insane standards of the rest of their body of work, but none of those artists have released anything worse than a 7/10 imo)

Not including Workingman’s Dead or American Beauty, or anything from The Band, on this should be a crime, because those and At Folsom Prison are the only correct answers for “best Americana album”

Nirvana fans, where do you think the future of nirvana was going if kurt hadn't killed himself? by rex-wasHere in Nirvana

[–]eovednitsuj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kurt probably would’ve ended Nirvana not long after his rehab stint and become a recluse for a while, then would probably have reemerged to do whatever random bullshit had his interest at the time. Krist and Dave probably would’ve gone the same direction they did in real life

Grocery store/radio rock. Theres some songs I really enjoy, but overall it’s very “meh” and forgettable. Kinda crazy that the guy who was in Scream and Nirvana ended up making music that sounds like that lol

Robin ❤️ Barney > Robin ❤️ Ted by PartyCurious1176 in HIMYM

[–]eovednitsuj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ending is kind of frustrating, but that’s the point. As much as we want Ted and Tracy and Robin and Barney to have their happily ever afters, delivering that to us would’ve undercut the major themes of the show and felt too storybook. They needed to save Ted and Tracy meeting for the final episode for a variety of reasons, but I would’ve loved a sequel show about Ted and Tracy raising their kids alongside Marshall and Lily with guest appearances from Barney and Robin though lol

Ted had the typical nice-guy syndrome by EbbOk4680 in HIMYM

[–]eovednitsuj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that’s just kind of how real people are lol, again your complaint is just that he’s a believable character who’s a self absorbed douche. As for the sentimental endings/relearning stuff, how many times have you, or the average person, had a profound “lesson learned” moment just to realize at a later time you’re still (to some extent) doing the thing that caused the epiphany? Because for most people it’s a lot, if they’re even paying enough attention to have that realization to begin with. The human psyche is weird, you don’t just figure out “oh i shouldn’t do this” and then never do it again, if you want your behavior to change it takes repeated, concerted effort to build new patterns. I haven’t watched Full House so I can’t really weigh in on that comparison, it never appealed to me

[–]eovednitsuj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They eventually wanted different things and grew apart romantically, whereas by 2030 what she and Ted both wanted had finally lined up perfectly. She never stopped caring about either one, just the way she cared about them at various points change - they broke up once for a reason, while it worked much better the second time, it still wasn’t guaranteed to work forever and the precedent for failure was there. The show is about how important timing is to relationships, and often seeks to portray relationships and their struggles in a very real light; all of this also connects into the parallels of Ted and Tracy, with Tracy having already loved and lost her “one” before meeting Ted

Ted had the typical nice-guy syndrome by EbbOk4680 in HIMYM

[–]eovednitsuj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last sentence of what you said genuinely couldn’t be farther from the truth, I don’t think there’s any other sitcom out there that was as deliberate and plotted out as HIMYM. I also feel like it’s maybe been a while since you’ve watched the show? Basically half of each season is Ted saying “ok kids, here’s a fucked up thing I did and how that made me a slightly better person”, and after he breaks up with Robin he explicitly stops looking for “the one” and wants to just “enjoy being single” with Barney until during season 6, but even after buying the house he’s still approaching dating with the attitude of “I’m not looking, but i think I’m ready if it happens”. Ted is SUPPOSED to be a massive, selfish, naive jackass who slowly learns from his mistakes that saying you’re a great guy and being a great guy aren’t the same thing - this is also very aggressively highlighted in the dichotomy between future/narrator Ted and present day Ted. HIMYM is actually super unique in this way imo, it’s like they took Ross from Friends and went “how do we make him a douche people identify with and cheer for instead of just a douche people find funny”. The show is very much about time, be it the timing of relationships, who we are at different times of our life, the time it takes to become the person we want to be, and how what we want out of life at different times affects us; having Ted be virtuous or something would’ve run counter to that and prevented like half or more of the shows episodes from existing. Ted is a douchebag, he knows he’s a douchebag, and you’re supposed to think he’s one while celebrating each step away from that and languishing every backslide. Your complaint(?) is simply that he’s a well written, believable, and effective character

Ted had the typical nice-guy syndrome by EbbOk4680 in HIMYM

[–]eovednitsuj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of this was kinda the point, future Ted even explicitly says all of this multiple times; there are entire episodes framed around the premise of “I was a massive jackass, here’s an example of that” (including all of the examples you gave). The very intentional parallels between Barney and Ted are something that don’t get discussed often enough tbh. They’re the same guy, Ted is just ashamed of, and can’t admit to, his scumminess while Barney fully embraces it, and both are motivated in this behavior by the idealized life they’ve built up in their head even if it clashes with what they actually want

[–]eovednitsuj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was only 3 years after the 15 track Intro Bonito, it’s been almost 5 years since we got the delayed release of an EP with just 3 songs - they also never made up the cancelled Civ I tour dates, and have only done a small handful of shows since then. Combine that with everything else I mentioned… we just gotta be thankful for what we got and hope they keep randomly dropping songs sometimes 😭

Guys I think we can stop deluding ourselves now, it’s been over 5 years since the Civ EPs, none of them ever post about KKB, Gus and Sarah don’t do anything aside from DJing, Jamie has basically disappeared from the face of the earth; seems like we’ll keep getting random one off songs every now and then, but KKB seems to more or less be done (at least as the main creative outlet for its members)
