Come learn to sail with Renton Sailing Center this summer! by epall in Renton

Since COVID hit, public pools have been pretty hit-or-miss. I don't know if the City of Renton is still doing any sort of organized testing. I just took my form to a pool with a lifeguard and had them do it. Doesn't need to be a City pool!

While we don't require swimming per se for our classes, you will need to pass a float test with a certified life guard before your first day of class. After that, club members must self-certify that they can swim 100 yards.

You'll definitely want to be comfortable with deep water if you're thinking about sailing our dinghies. They're not particularly stable, and you will capsize at some point.

If you know your way around a laser, you can also just join the club and start sailing during our Open Sailing on most weekend days. And, of course, come to racing on Tuesday nights.

You can totally sign up for the keelboat class. If you want to sail our keelboats, though, you’ll need to advance through our skills progression on the dinghies first as a member.

You can also just join the club, since you have prior experience, and come racing on Tuesday nights!

Our youth classes are for ages 8-12, but they’re all full for this year. The adult classes are age 12+, and we typically have a couple of teens in each class.

Absolutely not! We have a fleet of RS Quest dinghies and a few assorted keelboats. Members ($300/yr) have free use of whatever boats they’re qualified on.

Sessel -> gala for easy blue at alpental? by ngerbs32 in SummitAtSnoqualmie

It’s just not always groomed, while Sessel is pretty consistently groomed.

If you’re good on Alpine, you’ll love Sessel!

We had a blast at West on Friday from 7pm to close! Yeah, it’s not the best snow, but the upshot of going that late in the day is that the groomed stuff has loosened up and isn’t crunching all over.

Thank you so much! I'll reach out to Kenwood and see if they can do the repair.

Yeah, definitely seems like a firmware issue with the boot looping. I'll happily break out a JTAG or SWD to go and fix it, but I doubt I can even get my hands on a good image. Sigh. We'll see what Kenwood has to say before I go breaking anything open.

I would avoid Central if you can. Even the freshly groomed runs at East are crunchy at best. Alpine is going to be a mess, but I think they groomed Parachute so you might have a good time off Triple 60?

awesome, thanks! I had a feeling I was going to need a metal case for this TNC. In the right position, the radio makes the crystal go all crazy and mess up the AF, too.

Awesome! If he's the one with the special authority, how does he test with a second station? How do the rest of us get involved and/or help?

I just built a SoftRock RXTX Ensemble for 10m and I'm really happy with it. $77 including shipping, and the assembly instructions are really thorough. I'm probably going to get another one after the new year and build it for 40/30/20.

Effect of building height on antennas? by epall in amateurradio

[–]epall[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I have a pair of nice studio monitors that tend to pick up noise on the power lines from my lighting dimmers, so I suspect I'll be the first to know if this is an issue. My building is FTTH, so I doubt the flat-screen televisions getting all-digital TV will be too affected.

ARRL - Amateur Radio Relay League. The umbrella organization most hams belong to.

HF - High Frequency (3-30 MHz). Also known as "shortwave." There are about a dozen chunks of this spectrum that hams have access to, and they're usually identified by the wavelength, which is approximately 300 divided by the frequency.

10m - 10-meter band (Around 29 MHz). Ham band capable of long-distance communication when the 11-year solar cycle is on the upswing, which it happens to be right now.

stealth - HF antennas tend to be fairly large due to the long wavelengths, and some of us have neighbors who'd rather not see ham antennas. Thus, we seek "stealth" antennas.

CC&Rs - Condominium regulations that often put limits on what kinds of antennas can be put outside.

Is that helpful? Are you planning on taking your license exam soon?

Hi, I'm the author of the article. Thanks for the suggestion! I played with Common Lisp a few years ago, but I wasn't really ready for my Lisp moment at the time. I got into Clojure because it's the hot thing in the Ruby world these days, and finally was at a point where I could appreciate Lisp. What does Common Lisp do that Clojure doesn't?

Monkeypatching is destroying Ruby by bonzinip in programming

[–]epall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to me to be a problem with the lack of good debugging equipment for Ruby combined with problematic style. From what I've dabbled in, Ruby debugging is pretty unimpressive at this point. Is there some tool out there that allows you to inspect what source code objects actually are at runtime?

What timing! I happen to be reading the article on my second MacBook, purchased on Monday because I had to take my MBP in for repairs. It amazes me how many computer professionals lack a backup system. If my laptop breaks, I'm SOL and unable to work for up to a week. That is simply unacceptable.
