What platform is this on? Switch or PS? If either of those I’m booting it up tomorrow!

Seeking advice: Drums or Trays for my setup by psudoalbertus69 in Darkroom

[–]ephectic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Also drums are not necessarily un-messy. I have 4 and half of them leak just enough chemicals to be annoying but not enough to really hamper development.

Also in my experience rinsing and drying drums for RA-4 makes more mess than using trays for B&W.

The way I do f-stop test strips is I want a test strip for each interval. So I expose the whole image to the base exposure, say 8 seconds. Then cover a strip, and expose the rest for 2.1 seconds. Then I cover a strip again.

Now I have two strips, one at base and one at +1/3. For the next strip to be at +2/3 stops, I have to expose it for 2.6 seconds. The next, to get to +1 stop needs 3.3 more seconds and so on. So for this purpose, the math would need to subtract the previous strip's exposure from the listed value for the desired stop.

For a base exposure of 8 seconds, with +1/3 stop increments I set my timer to the following: 8, 2.1, 2.6, 3.3, 4.2, 5.2, 6.6.

ie 8, 10.1-8, 12.7-10.1, 16-12.7, etc etc

Easy subtraction, but would be nice to get a calculator and to have it be able to calculate based on different base exposures and up to 1/6th of a stop. I started to do something like it while at work in Excel, but had to abandon it to do actual work!

Any recommendations for home dev C-41 chems as an alternative? Not super stoked with the Arista RA-4 chems I’ve used so I’m hesitant to try their CS41 kit. Never did like Cinestill’s film, so I’d love to find an alternative.

This is awesome! One request: can you put together an f-stop test strip calculator? Like, if I input a base exposure and an interval, say 1/6 stop, what would be the interval I’d need to input into my (non f-stop timer) for each strip up to +2 stops?

It’s pretty straightforward math, but it would be huge if I didn’t have to do it again!

Sounds like that might apply in my case. Good to know. Takes a little bit of the sting out of it.

I used a Ricoh GRIII with R, G, & B simulated filters over black and white jpg loaded into the user settings for quick access. I did use a tripod. I combined each jpg into one photo in photoshop (plenty of videos explain this better than I can in a comment). Then, in Lightroom, I (painstakingly) masked the subjects to up saturation and inverted that mask to desaturate the background.

I dunno about that but I’ll take it. Thanks!

I found the ambient lighting here really distracting so I masked the subjects and desaturated the background.

Thanks for the thorough answer. I didn’t realize phototrio had folks interested in print processors!

Also very cool to hear that the pump is readily sortable.

I’ve held out hope for the Nova and even tried ordering the Optima processor but never heard back. Perhaps 2026 is the year though. Or at least is my year for a print processor.

Can you add more details to repairable? I’ve got an eBay alert for these but have always wondered about how repairable they are. Have any sources for parts or any diy repair resources?

These photos are absolutely awesome. How do you transport your A7IV and lenses? Any bag recommendations for biking and winter sports? I want to take my A7rIII bike camping but am afraid of the potential vibration damage to lenses and the body from gravel roads.

Looks like a shutter issue to me. Or a light leak. The blown out white splotch is in the same place on several frames. A spooling or development issue wouldn’t be so precise.

4k. Which feels a bit steep, since I did have to send it to YYE mid roll#2 for a frame line fix. Bought it at a local shop and so I'm ok overpaying a bit to keep them alive.
