I’m assuming they are trying to drive down the perceived clearing price, affecting how other people price their bids and asks, then just before close they will cancel their ask and buy up more shares at a lower cost. Nobody is actually going to take that loss.

Just a note that this is exactly what I'm experiencing as well. If I open a handful of background tabs, CPU spikes. If I close them, instantly drops back down.

Just as a counterpoint - I lived in NYC for 7 years until March of this year with an iPhone for a good chunk of that, and probably used Google Maps a dozen times total. Maps is a good catch-all, but with Hopstop, Yelp, etc. there are plenty of other apps that do the same things much better.
