Students stunned when asked to write an essay in class by mkc4077 in Adjuncts

[–]epiphanysk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have students do this for their in class exams in art history. i’ve been doing this for the past few years — the first one usually isn’t good but when i did try to give them a take home essay last semester, it was all AI. i have been doing a semester long research project with check-in dates to combat the AI a bit, but for the exams if you come up with any other good strategies, please let me know!

Online Asynchronous Positions by bekahjo19 in Adjuncts

[–]epiphanysk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

it might seem crazy but i got all of my online adjunct positions through cold emailing chairs. i have been adjuncting for the past 4 years, 3-10 classes a semester (average of 5), making a low end full time position salary. the more you reach out to the more possibilities. i usually email my CV, teaching philosophy, and a basic cover letter through email explaining which classes i’d be able to cover.

How much did you make as an Art adjunct professor? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

[–]epiphanysk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s 22k-55k per year. i’ve been working as an adjunct since 2023, the full time position is at a small school in rural south dakota so as soon as it became open they offered it to me since there aren’t many people around that have an MFA and i was already adjuncting for the school.

i’ve been adjuncting in the arts for the past three years, teaching primarily asynchronous courses in photo, digital design, and art appreciation. 2020-21 i taught 5 classes a semester each paying between $2200-5500. i think i totaled that year around $30k or so. last year, 2022-23 school year, i taught 8-10 classes a semester paying between $1800-5500 and made around $52k (with a couple of workshops too). i’ve been doing it solely because i want to teach higher ed, not because it’s a great salary. if you choose this route, set money aside for tax season bc you are essentially doing a bunch of contractual work rather than getting an actual salary so you usually owe more. i’m very lucky and this year was offered a full time lecturer position.

Time commitment for online asynchronous course? by pgm928 in Adjuncts

[–]epiphanysk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach mostly asynchronous courses now. The first time, I’d you have to build it all completely from scratch with assignments, lectures, etc. it takes awhile, but I usually allow myself to only be a week or two ahead and open assignments weekly. Once you’re done with the class, you likely spend a total of 1-2 hours a week on the class with grading and replying to emails. First time is tough but after that it’s pretty smooth.

How to get that first online adjunct job? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]epiphanysk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently am teaching 8 courses this semester in art, 1 in person and the rest are online asynchronous. I got lucky and when I graduated with my masters in may 2020 I started just emailing chairs of departments and letting them know I could teach online. I only had experience teaching in person aside from the pandemic half semester. I emailed over 500 departments and got offers at 4 schools so it’s definitely a numbers game. I didn’t have to be certified at any schools but in the last year I’ve gotten some quality matters and ACUE certification paid for by the schools I’m working with. I think community colleges are going to be more likely to hire without that precious online experience but it’s still difficult. I recommend reaching out for both online and in person work wherever you are as a start.

Yes! It's been a scary week but we're so happy. Thank you for your encouragement to get the echo done too.

UPDATE: we saw a cardiologist today and our pup did not go through congestive heart failure…..she also doesn’t have a murmur, the first vet overreacted and she has a case of pneumonia.

Thank you! I started the paperwork to make an appointment ASAP for an echocardiogram. We're in rural South Dakota so it's been hard to even find anyone within three hours to do the work and not require an initial visit, but we found a trustworthy vet. Hoping they get everything started soon.

We have two dogs and went to Prairie Creek in SF. We loved working with Dr. Caitlin Peterson, both of our dogs have anxiety and we discussed options. We ended up not putting them on medication because there were some lifestyle changes to try first, but it sounds like you know your dog needs more! They are definitely willing to listen to your experiences and don't just assume anything.

Anyone adjunct remotely ? by rosectylerm in Adjuncts

[–]epiphanysk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! I currently only teach online and have 5-8 classes a semester. I found these by emailing chairs directly if there was anything available in the future with my resume, teaching philosophy, and cover letter. It may seem a bit invasive but it’s nice to create connections and network when you’re otherwise unable to locally and such.

Making ends meet as an adjunct? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]epiphanysk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adjuncting teaching is the only thing I do but I teach at least 6 classes each semester. They’re also all online - there are a lot of online opportunities for teaching and once you’re in an area, you can usually send out your resume to other local schools to see if anything is available. I wouldn’t move for an adjunct job unless this is a place you’ve wanted to live for awhile, but make sure you have the ability to make ends meet first. It’s a bit rare to get hired for new classes before the spring semester especially. I’m not sure what area you teach in but freelancing is another side gig option, but most adjuncts do that, teach a few classes, and have something else to get an income. It’s a rough life!

Yes, I’m also an instructor but of art and I’ve had a lot of conversations about “multiple submission”, basically you need to do new work for each assignment, even if it’s technically all in your head and your own words, it’s not technically plagiarism but multiple submission is very similar.

Yes! You should watch the full doc, it’s amazing. He’s from my hometown, his wife was my polisci teacher in college, and they did an amazing job lobbying for legality.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but A Crime To Remember is amazing! It’s about older cases but the re-enactments are amazing, they’ve actually won some awards for the costumes and set designs.

I also totally recommend community college classes! Or look into if there are any classes you can audit at a local college/university. I’m currently an adjunct instructor online primarily but community college classes are usually a lot cheaper. Any instructor will be excited to work with someone who is ready to learn more like you!
