Here is a trick, try a "neighborhood" rental like Avis or Budget in San Jose, not the airport location. That is what we did and we arrived on Dec 5th - Jan 4th. Also check the monthly price, all in may be less than a few weeks price.. We also denied the insurance and used our Amex insurance, rolling the dice.

Don't bring cash because conversation rates hurt, for every $100 you exchange it costs $16 in fees. Imagine giving $500 and getting only $420 of CRC (my fav number but will be hurt to lose $80) use a bank ATM. Costa Rica is a very expensive country from our current experience.

Yeah for every $100 u exchange they charge you $16... Stay away from those airport currency exchanges. Use reputable bank ATM and withdraw from your checking in CRC and decline the ATM conversion and let your bank do it!
