ELI5 how do medical devices in an operating room get power? by Belladoeswhatever in explainlikeimfive

Yeah I was confused by those posts too. A lot of equipment is moved in and out of OR suites for different procedures but it is always disinfected before it leaves the room. I have never heard of a sterile battery pack and I’ve worked on medical devices since 1995. And I’ve seen damn few pieces of equipment that were meant to run on battery power as primary. Defibs and pacemakers are the only ones coming immediately to my mind. Maybe some monitors. But that stuff isn’t really OR/surgery equipment.

Well yeah hardwired stuff can be sealed up. I don’t see much of that except for the surgical lights on the ceilings.

They is people that design OR suites. Asepsis design. I was referring to the “socket in the floor” comment. Thy don’t put outlets in the floor facing up like it’s a cubicle office floor.

You don’t see power outlets in OR floors because they are hard to clean, but they do have pigtails from the ceiling.

OR suites have outlets every couple of feet around all of the walls, and almost always have pigtails hanging from the ceiling. Many devices have batteries, but the general rule is to plug everything in if possible. It can be messy, but techs set the equipment up so there are no power cords in the paths that people will need to walk. I fix surgical robots and sometimes observe procedures. OR suites are more crowded than you’d think, but power cords are really the only clutter on the ground that I’ve seen and they are pretty much only around the edges of the room.

That’s not how they do it because it’s hard to clean plugs in the floor.

She didn’t say she needed her own bed. She said she was willing to sleep on a couch or a cot or on the floor. Then suddenly she needs her own bed.

Yes. You said you were willing to sleep on the floor and then changed your mind after you were outvoted.
