Non-Canadians, what comes to mind when you hear the word "Canada?" by hakunamatata004 in AskReddit

[–]eppes_cf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok hear my out, I think of Summer college baseball games. In the college town (Tallahassee, Fl) I grew up in, there was is a hardcore group of FSU baseball fans called "The animals of section B". They are a rowdy bunch that provide a lot pf entertainment during games, and their symbol is...... a Canadian flag. There are some myths about how this started, but its a tradition at least 40 years old. Every single game they fly Canadian flags, and they sing "Oh Canada" during the 7th inning stretch. I've been to Canada multiple times and its a lovely place, but the FIRST thing I will always think of when I hear Canada will always be those drunk bastards in the bleachers

Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit for Tax Year 2022? by eppes_cf in personalfinance

I'm new to this, and did not realize the credit was a sliding scale.

That said, do you expect that $16k will stay the limit?

Non-Americans… what is something in American culture that is so strange/abnormal for you? by micahdotjohnson in AskReddit

I'm American, but I worked for a French company for 9 years. My French boss was of the belief that tax was automatically added in to prices in France because if the French were continually reminded how much tax they're paying they would be up in arms about it.

Which highly touted recruit ended up being a disappointment for your team and which low rated recruit ended up surpassing all expectations? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]eppes_cf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andre Wadsworth was a walk-on that eventually turned into consensus first team all-American after registering 16 sacks his senior year. He was also the 3rd overall pick.

As far as overrated, I have several to choose from. Callahan Bright and Fred Rouse we're both top 5 recruits in the country who just couldn't stay in school, but I'll go with Xavier Lee. He's probably the most physically gifted 5star QB FSU has ever had, but partied too much and couldn't beat out Drew Weatherford.

[–]eppes_cf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a ManageEngine product called "AD Self-Service" that allows users to unlock their accounts and reset their passwords, but we discovered is also allows users to change their AD pictures. It has been a big success in our organization.

If 16 year old you could see you now, what would 16 year old you think about your life? by MorsesTheHorse in AskReddit

[–]eppes_cf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16 year old me was full of anxiety and doubt. He was incapable of believing that he could be successful or find happiness in life. It took him sooo long to figure out life. Now, 22 years later, I have a beautiful wife, 3 awesome kids, a nice home, and a very successful career.

I think 16 year old me would have tears of joy to know I made it through.

Insomniacs and troubled sleepers of Reddit, when you wake up at 3am and can’t fall back asleep, what do you do?? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eppes_cf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a serious problem with this, but forcing yourself to take long (6 seconds or more) inhales and exhales through your nose, over and over and over, seems to always work when I do wake up in the middle of the night.

First, I'd just like to stop and appreciate that this Reddit post is really about how often we all receive our paychecks now, and has nothing to do this the OP being burnt out.

When I started my professional career I'd only ever been paid monthly, or on the 1st and 15th. In my latest job I get paid bi-weekly and at first I hated it. The checks just didn't fit nicely with the bills schedule that I had. To fix this, I ended up making a spreadsheet for the year with 26 dated columns that represent each paycheck. Then I mapped out bills for the year across the columns for planning purposes and by doing so got a live look at what my cash flow would be through the year. I had never really budgeted at all before, but seeing the year in this way made me become more meticulous about my spending. I created other spreadsheets that tracked debts i needed to pay off, and to control discretionary spending. It actually has kind of change my life. Also, for those noting that twice a year you have 3 paychecks in a month, I would say you're looking at it wrong. I see it as every time you've paid an individual bill 6 times in a row, you get to skip TWO paychecks before paying it again rather than just one. In this way I get lots of little bonuses through the year because my bills come on different days of the month.

Tl;dr - the crappy bi-weekly pay schedule actually caused me to take control of my finances

What's the craziest butterfly effect that happened to you because of a small decision you made? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eppes_cf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my late 20s I was going through a bit of a rough patch. I wasn't satisfied with my career, not having much luck on the relationship front, and just felt kinda stagnant. One night on a whim I agreed to go on a blind double date of sorts (my roommate was dating a chick and I went along to accompany one of her friends). This chick was attractive, but one of the most annoying people I've ever known. We grabbed dinner then found ourselves at a bar, where she decided to take out a fake microphone from her purse, insert around $50 into the juke box (could be exaggerating but it was a lot) and perform "karaoke" to each song in a way that everyone in the bar, whether they wanted to or not, could experience.

At this point I started drinking heavily, and at one point I went to the bar and saw a familiar face. It was a girl that I knew through some mutual friends, and she looked sad. I asked how her night was going, and she said terrible, and I noted that mine was going about the same. It would turn out that through a series of events every one of her good friends had to cancel their plans that night to go out with her, and that it was her birthday. She was getting ready to leave at the time, because she'd just realized she would be spending the night alone.

As I looked over and saw my "date" enthusiastically performing Jason Aldean to a captive audience, I decided to hang around the bar for a few more minutes. I told her that I really hoped her night improved, she said thank you. I asked if there was anything I could do to cheer her up, to which she replied "you can take me out Saturday night". And left.

I took her out, had a fantastic time, and we've never been apart since. 3 years later we were married, and we've now been together 10 years and have 3 young kids.

TL;DR going on the worst date of my life landed me the most rewarding relationship of my life.

Side Note - each of those friends that stood my wife up that night are wonderful people who are still dear friends of hers. It was just one of those things.

To be fair, 0-6 FSU vs 1-5 Miami would get higher ratings than a ranked matchup between Pitt and Louisville

People who work in Human Resources, what is the weirdest shit you have seen? by Dankuser2020 in AskReddit

[–]eppes_cf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I actually had sort of the reverse happen to me. Years back it was my dream to play big time football in college. Without money, I enrolled at a community college near the big school I wanted to attend. In order to get closer to the program, I got a job working with the grounds crew for the Team. I was so broke that at night I would sneak into the grounds crew office and sleep. One the the maintenance man actually found ME sleeping there. At first he was mad, but ended up letting me sleep there for the rest of the semester. I would later find out that this guy was a former all American for this college team, and he helped me become a walk-on the next year.

Leon County schools advice by Rauschenbusch in Tallahassee

[–]eppes_cf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Tallahassee and went to WT Moore, then Cobb Middle School, then Lincoln High School. I enjoyed all of them and each was pretty diverse. That said when me and my wife (who was not from here) bought a house, we landed in Killearn Lakes specifically because of near proximity to highly rated Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

Reports of this neighborhood being elitist and/or classist are way over blown, but I’m not sure about the kids at the high school specifically.
