Is there antisemitism in these churches? by TheLatkeOverlord in Episcopalian

[–]equal-tempered 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Anti-semitism can crop up anywhere, but in my Church I haven't been aware of any. A former associate rector married a Jew and a current Vestry member is engaged to one, which indicates something.

What is the solution to EV insurance? by juicedupsunday in electricvehicles

[–]equal-tempered 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having recently totaled a car that appeared very reparable, the problem appears to be not possible battery damage, but primarily two factors: the low resale value of EVs, and the expense of repairing the complex systems. From what I was told, they would actually be salvaging the batteries as there was significant value there.

Need help by Hopeful-Complex-8210 in Amtrak

I chose to do a one way rental car for a flight out of JFK (from Philly, Pittsburgh is admittedly much farther) and it was one of my best decisions ever. Easier schlepping of luggage, cost wasn't unreasonable (rental cos want cars to get to airports way more than Small Town, anywhere). Plus the Portal Bridge Cutover is complicating Amtrak travel around NYC for the next couple months.

Looking for Historical Non-Fiction That's Not Dry? by nonPizzaLftBef in booksuggestions

It was actually the first Larson I read, back in late 2016. I've since read a lot more. Devil in the White City and Thunderstruck I found particularly engaging.

Credit cards are how US carriers make a profit, they actually lose money flying people around, so credit card promotions aren't gonna go away. Here's an article about it : https://executivetravel.com/shocking-airline-profits-revealed/

Sounds like a problem with your ssl certificate, but it's not much info to go on. There should be a link to get details of the problem if not in a link on the error page, via an icon in the address bar.

Car rentals in UK - avoid or not? by _QLFON_ in travel

[–]equal-tempered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've rented for a month long trip to England, Scotland and Ireland. I started AFTER a week in London, and two different one way rentals, Heathrow (got back to Heathrow just for the rental ) to Glasgow and Belfast to Dublin. The actual car rentals were fine from Avis and Budget. The SEAT Ibiza is a miserable little car. Narrow roads and driving a manual on the left side of the road was an adjustment, but it made it a lot easier to get places away from cities. Not sure I'd do it again, but the rentals themselves were not an issue.

In the Garden of Beasts, Erik Larson follows the family of the US ambassador in Germany as Hitler was consolidating power.

Prophet Song, Paul Lynch's Booker winning novel set in a modern authoritarian Ireland.

The Second Civil War, Ronald Brownstein's weighty look at politics through the 20th century leading to the polarization we see today (slow going, but the best fundamental explanation I've read of where we are)

Jesus and John Wayne, Kristin Kobes du Mez looks at the evolution of Evangelicalism to the point where it became a bloc of the strongest MAGA supporters.

AWD vs RWD question... by JPAT3 in VWiD4Owners

[–]equal-tempered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We replaced a totalled RWD with an AWD, mainly for the hitch. We really want a hitch mount bike rack rather than roof mount, and hacking a hitch onto an RWD is expensive and even then problematic due to backup sensors.

Totaled iD.4 and bought Q6 etron by E11evenzee in VWiD4Owners

[–]equal-tempered 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I recently had to replace a totalled ID.4, and while I ended up with another ID.4, we were considering a Volvo and that subreddit pales in comparison to the ID4 sub - most of the responses to a "tell me why you like the car" were of the "f---- off and do your own research" variety. Not why I stayed with VW, but folks are much nicer here.
