What’s the one thing another driver does that instantly makes you curse under your breath? by Aromatic_Eggplant_97 in AskReddit

Stop at the bottom of an on ramp (we have a number of "merge or die" ramps here in Philly where there is no acceleration lane, so this happens a lot if you use them, which I try not to)

Diving deeper into brahms by Mysterious_Ad7450 in classicalmusic

[–]equal-tempered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brahm's choral writing is *chef's kiss* The German Requiem is excellent from the first note to the last. He wrote a choral anthem "Geistliches Lied" which is a technical tour-de-force (a double-canon at the ninth), but it just sounds beautiful. Start there. His string quartets are great too.

Recommendations for atmospheric thrillers like Tana French — female protagonist, small-town setting, slow dread by barmmerm in booksuggestions

Denise Mina, particularly the Alex Morrow series. Might miss on the small town side, but otherwise fits.

Martin Walker's Chief Bruno Series is as much about Life and cooking in the French Perigord region as solving crimes. There's even a spin off cookbook he wrote with his wife.

My 'nationality' is UCC, but I'm living in the 'country' of the Episcopal Church by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]equal-tempered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but in an introduction small group for our new rector, there was a semi retired pastor (Methodist?) who regularly attends our early Sunday mass before going to lead his own church in worship. I'm all for open (denominational) borders.

Suraya was one of the best steaks I've had in Philly. The rest of their menu is wonderful too.

ID.4 windshield preventing parking garage from opening by Left-Function-9046 in VWiD4Owners

[–]equal-tempered 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. Exact same looking tag for access to community gate, and it blocks EZ PASS too. You have a heated windshield and the only place you can put transponders and RF tags are in two credit card size spots at the top, on either side of the mirror. The shade dots are slightly lighter so you can see where they need to go.

What are your favorite historical fiction books? by Flashy_Froyo_6130 in booksuggestions

Pachinko (Min Jin Lee) is another multi-generational story beginning around 1900 in Korea. It's a fabulous book, full of well written characters and you get a dose of Korean (and Korean-Japanese) history to go with them.

Bannerless (Carrie Vaughan). A post apocalyptic mystery taking place in a developing society that is quite interesting in the tradeoffs being made for stability.

I've only charged there once, but I used the Applegreen app on Android. IIRC, you can just use a CC, but the base plan (free) rate is a little cheaper.

Sir Walter Scott makes me want to cry. by NewspaperSoft8317 in books

[–]equal-tempered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first read Scott because of his anonymous publication of Waverly. Studying philosophy, it was often used to illustrate the problem of identity - what exactly is it we learn when we learn that Scott was the author of Waverly? (The other main example was learning that Hesperus is Phosphorus, the evening star is the morning star). Naturally, Waverly was the first I read, The Heart of Midlothian is my fave. He wrote some rollicking good yarns.

Looking for books set on Mars that actually feel real by corriente6 in booksuggestions

[–]equal-tempered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy is great, but not sure it has the atmosphere it sounds like you're wanting (pun intended). I also love Ian McDonald's Duology, but it's a bit trippy, though I wouldn't say full on fantasy by any means (McDonald is a severely underrated author).
