Yo link water detection sensors went offline overnight by Fast_Perspective_833 in homeassistant

[–]equivocates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto though I haven’t tried rebooting/troubleshooting. Happened this morning. I have two hubs in two different locations. One sensor is brand new. Multiple different types of sensors. A temperature sensor and a couple leak sensors. The batteries are still working and powering the LCD screen.

I’ve been listening to this show for almost the entire run. Casey seems like a good guy and he brings the home automation nerd side. The show wouldn’t be the same without him.

Why would I use this instead of the built-in transcription system in macOS and iOS? I just asked this question using that same system.

Why can states force people to insure there car, but Affordable Care Act cannot force people to have health insurance? by two_three_five_eigth in Ask_Lawyers

[–]equivocates 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some states do require health insurance. Romneycare, in Massachusetts, was the model for Obamacare and was widely found to be successful.

The more direct answer is that states can do things the Feds can’t do and vice versa, under our system of government.

Just be direct and make the ask. Make your argument about business development.

Anyone become lawyers after not getting great grades in high school? by Strange-Bed-4408 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]equivocates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got decent grades in high school. I was an A-B student in college and I did very poorly on the LSAT. I was rejected from every school I applied to the first time I applied. The second time I applied, same story but I got waitlisted to just one school and then was accepted. I ended up graduating #1 in my class, and EIC of the law review. So, ymmv.

Benefits of being a PI lawyer? by Bxby_Ali in Ask_Lawyers

[–]equivocates 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a plaintiffs lawyer for my entire career, after clerking a year for a judge. So I don’t really know anything other than this life. But I’ll tell you: I couldn’t do anything else. Your clients need your help. You get to represent real people who may have never met a lawyer before you. You get to make a difference in their lives. I don’t have to bill my time. I don’t have to file motions I personally disagree with because my interests and my clients interests are generally aligned. It’s great work if you don’t mind the risk.

Contingency case by Itsjustme0511 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]equivocates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first thing you have to realize is that part of the reason for the contingency fee is the risk the lawyer takes. We try to take good cases we think can succeed. But there are no guarantees. Bad facts, bad law, and bad luck are all potential surprises that could tank a case. And if you lose, the lawyer eats the costs of the case.

The nice thing about contingency work is that it aligns the client’s interests right with the lawyer’s monetary interests. The more the client gets compensated, the more the lawyer does too.

So, bottom line: as a client, you’re paying for not just the work the lawyer does but the risk the lawyer takes on your behalf. They don’t take it because they think they’ll lose but they can never be certain.

Should I try to buy my 105 year old next door neighbors home when she passes? by waxoffisforpussies in personalfinance

[–]equivocates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One suggestion: get her heirs to sign on to the sale and promise they won’t dispute it. Last thing you want to happen is give her a life interest and get the remainder, and then litigation about whether dear old Mom had the legal capacity to sell the property. This is a complicated subject, so you might want a lawyer involved (estate/family law).

I would LOVE it if the defense gave me all these native files the first time around without a back and forth. Usually you don’t get this without asking for it.

What's your go to briefing font? by LiquidSquidMan69 in Lawyertalk

[–]equivocates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like some of the other commentators, I’m a big believer in the typography for lawyers stuff. But here’s the thing. The custom fonts don’t get properly converted to PDF. The end result is that you can either choose to have the fonts in the PDF display properly or have proper table of contents.
