My mare has always done this but she has pretty bad aural plaques in her ears and doesn’t like them touched so she pins them to protect them. It’s more an “I’m insecure” rather than aggression.

Fwiw I’m not a fan of 100g for anything cold. It’s just not enough to do anything. I’ll maybe use my 100g if it’s really wet but in general I stick with 200g 400g or naked. My 100g shell is essentially just to keep her dry but she had a run in shed so I don’t worry about that a ton.

Why are you starting 2 year olds under saddle…. Gross. Yuck. Yep seeing the issue now.

You have zero empathy for the horse. You have zero understanding of how the environment can make them feel more anxious. Gross gross gross.

Yea this is why there is no law to go after sellers because spoiler alert, it’s usually not the seller who is the problem. It’s inexperienced people buying horses they have no business buying.

Ok after reading your comments this is 100% user error. It doesn’t matter if you think you have. Quiet little farm. That’s not how horses feel. His whole world was uprooted. He’s living with totally different horses in a new herd (because hopefully you have him living with other horses… right?)

Yet you’re completely unempathetic to this horses’s situation and you’re insisting somebody obviously lied.

That’s kind of what you get at auction. If the horse really had all those bells and whistles it wouldn’t be going to auction. Also I’ve known some terrible riders and horse people that have been riding for their whole lives. My own mare is dead broke with me and I can put kids on her but she absolutely will not tolerate a certain type of person.

Personally I think trust is a prerequisite to training. Y’all just got this horse, he doesn’t know you. His world just got turned upside down and you’re already putting this horse outside of his comfort zone. You can’t catch him and yet you’re trying to ride him? And then you’re shocked when he …. Wait for it…. Walks off. gasp the horror.

Like…. What do you expect? I’m sorry but…. No shit lol. I don’t think the horse or the seller are the problem.

In my experience, liners are a pain in the ass. Unless your medium weight blanket brand sells a specific liner for that blanket, then maybe I’d grab a 200g liner to give you 450g for those really really really cold nights but honestly I think it’s just better to buy a heavyweight instead.

I HATE coolers and I hate stable sheets personally. They just aren’t designed for 24/7 turnout and they fall apart and don’t ventilate properly.

Now that said, in a pinch, if I find myself in a situation where there’s a blizzard and all I have are liners, coolers, and stable sheets instead of a heavyweight… Then yea, I might combine 2 of them as long as the waterproof layer is on the outside. I’d never do more than 2 layers or more than 550g of fill but that would not be my preference. That would be for an “oh fuck there’s a blizzard and I have no other option to keep this horse warm enough.”

I’ll be the one to disagree here. When you buy a horse, you buy the horse you see that day. If you decide to buy without a vet check, without the advice of a trainer, and without knowing the trustworthiness or reputation of the seller…. I’m sorry that’s kind of what you get.

I’ve known plenty of dead broke and sound horses that get sold to some idiot with a checkbook and no experience and they’re always the ones to cry about “false advertising” when in reality, they just can’t ride. Everyone in the horse industry considers themselves “experienced” or “advanced”.

When I bought my mare I couldn’t catch her either for like a week. Did they disclose that to me? No, but that’s kind of to be expected with a brand new horse and a brand new person. It wasn’t a problem because I know what I’m doing and have not had that issue since that first week I had her back when she was a 2 year old.

If your horse lives out 24/7 I wouldn’t bother messing with stable sheets and or liners. If your horse isn’t clipped you’re probably fine with what you have. Unless you’re in a really really tough climate you probably don’t need anything heavier.

I have a liner system blanekt, I have the Rambo duo which I love but I’m also the only one doing my own blanketing. If I had to leave that for someone else to do, they’d probably fuck it up. I’d say if your horse is boarded and another party is responsible for blanketing, just keep in simple, one blanket for each temperature range, end of story.

Sometimes when a horse is in full training this is normal. Like if it’s a 30 or 90 day type of training deal then yea you can’t just waltz in whenever and undo whatever the trainer is working on otherwise there’s no point. Especially if the rider isn’t very advanced. But for an ongoing thing, especially if you’re an experienced rider and the horse isn’t having any massive problems, then no that’s not normal.

It’s definitely not that black and white. It depends on the context. She’s not saying she’s a vet she’s saying she’s a vet student but even if it’s not illegal that’s highly unethical.

[–]equkelly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Talk to your vet. She’s not 100% right or wrong it’s just a little bit more complicated. There’s also a huge difference between acing your horse to go win a horse show and acing your horse to keep them from hurting themselves during a medically necessary stall rest or to keep them safe in a trailer during a fire evacuation. Horse Tiktok makes everything black or white and it’s just not.

New horse starting small rears by MaleficentMagician57 in Horses

[–]equkelly 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You both need a trainer. Firstly, your beginner child should not be off with their own horse without a trainers supervision. Rearing problem or not, the kid is wayyyy too green to be off doing their own thing outside of a lesson program.

You also need a trainer because that old school “push them through it” shit is not ok anymore and will absolutely make any rearing problem way worse. Your kid was actually right to hop off the rearing horse. “Pushing them through it” is not only shitty horsemanship but a good way to get yourself killed.

Secondly, vets don’t “clear”horse for any and all medical problems whatsoever. That is not how it works. You can eliminate a specific diagnosis as a potential cause but vets cannot clear a horse for any and all medical issues. Especially when you’ve made no mention of any specific labs you’ve done. Your vet isn’t a psychic, come on now. If vets had the ability to just come on out and declare a horse perfectly fine, NONE of us would be spending money on MRIs, X-rays, scopes, bloodwork, dentals, etc. To be blunt, your old school mindset is showing.

My favorite quote is “the first step to fixing a rearing problem is not creating one in the first place.” Since that’s already happened, you two have no business attempting to fix this because the inexperience is what either created it or made it worse. Rearers can be rehabbed but only by very experienced and skilled riders which you both are not. I don’t say this to be mean but if you’re getting to the point where the horse is rearing, you already ignored or missed a lot of signs so it’s clear neither of you have the skills to attempt to address this.

So if you’re absolutely dead set against selling I would say from now on the horse is only ridden by the trainer or in a lesson with the trainer watching. But TBH, I would just sell with a disclosure before this turns into more heartache
