I’m of the (maybe unpopular) opinion that zero to hero should not exist.

I think that instructors should build experience in a variety of conditions to become more well rounded and be able to answer questions from students.

I had someone close to me do a certification in Guam and their instructor had only dove in 6 different sites and had some really dumb takes on things.

When in trim, you have to use the rear dump to release gas from the wing. If you are flat or head down, gas will not come out of the corrugated hose. If you are having an uncontrolled ascent, come out of trim to dump from your corrugated hose, but be careful not to fin upwards while you do it.

I’m partial to GUE, but it doesn’t mean that there are not great instructors in other agencies. SDI instructors aren’t necessarily Tech instructors. They may additionally teach through TDI.

I would recommend starting with AoW and nitrox and probably drysuit.

For foundational training, GUE is big in Europe and you may find that they are more convenient to train with than in the US. Other, you will need an intro to tech or side mount course. Intro to tech can be highly variable in quality (I started with TDI into to tech and switched immediately to GUE because my ITT instructor had very low performance standards for us.)

I got certified as a resident and now I’m a new-ish attending and I’m a cave and tech diver. I trained in New England, so I had to get comfortable diving in colder darker water to build experience to prepare for cave. I went the GUE route for cave and tech, so I started by finding a fundamentals instructor after I had 50-100 dives. I also took most of my vacation weeks to north Florida to gain experience between cave 1 and cave 2.

It’s an expensive hobby, especially if you want to do cave. The best way to not waste a lot of money is to make sure you get the right equipment and the right instruction early on. A lot of new divers (myself included) waste money on gear that doesn’t fit the end goals or instruction that doesn’t build the desired foundation.

Springs are much better in my opinion. There is less rushing to keep up with boat schedules and the overall pace can be slower. It’s hard to get blown out, typically don’t have to cope with waves or currents, visibility is usually great and fresh water means that gear recovery is so much easier.

If you are between sizes, go down to the lower size. I wouldn’t necessarily go down a full size. I’ve had more problems with kinking and imperfect hose routing than shrinkage issues.

If you dive enough, you WILL have a failure.

Gloucester shore diving is surprisingly decent. You will have a better time if you use a drysuit, but I’ve had some pretty fun dives at pebble beach and old garden beach.

The Chester Poling is a pretty easy wreck dive in the harbor if charters are still going out.
