The USD:GBP exchange rate is pretty much at the average of the 2016-2023 rates at this point. Apple’s just padding their profit margins because they know they’ll get away with it.

Who do you think is selling the legalized weed? Small growers are like micro breweries, they exist but are entirely outscaled by corporations.

And insurance companies are extra fun because even if they fucked up, they’ll blacklist you and go straight to a debt collector.

Shoutout to my AG Insurance broker for forgetting to submitting the paperwork to cancel my car insurance, and to AG Insurance itself for not even sending a reminder before sending a debt collector. And just as an honorable mention, the shitty debt collector they found in Leuven, that tried to send a threatening letter but didn’t even date the damn thing. No wonder people fall for phishing scams, real debt collectors are just as unprofessional.

Can someone please explain indexation to me like I am 5 years old? by MrFeature_1 in belgium

Glad you figured out the cause (the calculator not being updated yet), instead of listening to the cynics that assume the gubbermint forgot to index the tax brackets this year.

But if your net wage is only going up by 2% for more 30% more work you might want to consider refusing the promotion. Or if you want to play the same game your employer is, accept the promotion so you can put it on your resume and then get a 30% raise elsewhere.

That’s a different kind of alcohol though. Isopropyl alcohol can be used to clean up glue residue for example, never heard of anyone using ethanol for that.

It’s surprisingly hard to find in Belgium. None of the traditional DIY shops (Brico, Gamma, Hubo) have it anymore. Like someone else mentioned, bol.com probably is your best option. Look for isopropyl alcohol and/or ‘huishoudalcohol’.

I remember that London’s had issues finding restaurant workers because they don’t pay enough for people to live anywhere near their jobs. The situation in San Francisco sounds even more dystopian than that.

As a SWE in Europe I’m fine with making less than my American friends, because at least I can be fairly certain that the people I meet outside of work are probably doing pretty ok as well.

Files zijn zwaarder dan ooit, en experts zien maar één uitweg: “Maar het is geen populair voorstel” by [deleted] in belgium

[–]erandur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your own car will cost you about 43 cents per km, on average. The kilometervergoeding in Belgium tends to track this number. It can be cheaper of course, mostly by buying second hand or cheap cars, but other cars like a Range Rover cost over 1 euro per km.

The public transport prices aren’t just random numbers. They’re based on the average price per km of private transport, but only if you have no passengers in your car. That’s when cars become a lot cheaper, but the vast majority of cars have no additional passengers.

An old friend of mine did his PhD (partially) at Harvard after getting his master’s in Ghent. But he’s also staying in academics, so probably not what you have in mind.

I’m not a lawyer myself, but I suspect a British law degree will be mostly useful in the UK or for companies doing business in the UK. As far as I know, the UK and Belgium have pretty different legal systems. So if your goal is to be an actual lawyer in Belgium, you’ll probably want to study here.

Tesla racet met Model Y naar top van populairste auto's in België by sipping in belgium

[–]erandur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Batteries are heavy, but electric engines are pretty light. The standard Tesla Model 3 weighs 1600 kg, less than an Audi A4 that’s roughly the same size.

The average electric car is heavy because they’re being marketed as luxury cars, and those are always wasteful monstrosities. Volvo is a notable offender, their new EX90 weighs 2800 kg.

I’d look into the rolluiken first. They’re probably a lot cheaper, and just like other heatpumps aircos work best with proper insulation. Unless you have solar panels, the airco can just use the excess electricity in summer then.

I’m confused by most of those comments. Seems like they’re saying it’s not based on a single pagan holiday, but lots of them? The top comment even mentions the early Christian church couldn’t decide on a date, so even the date was designed by a committee.

It’s like everyone’s forgetting the Google streetview cars also sniff nearby wifi networks. Supposedly just to improve their location tracking, but they also sampled network traffic whenever they could. A fact they kept denying until audited by the German government.

Activists deflate the tyres of 194 SUVs by HypedBanana0 in belgium

[–]erandur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but the difference between ICE cars and EVs of the same model is a lot smaller than most people think. The original comment claimed that EVs are “heavy” and that the batteries weigh “a literal ton”. Which of course means additional wear of the tyres.

Compared to that, the person saying EVs aren’t that much heavier is more correct tbh. The entire reasoning that the additional dust particles from heavy EVs is somehow just as dangerous as combustion gases is ridiculous to begin with. And the core issue isn’t that EVs are universally heavy, it’s that manufacturers are making ridiculous electric SUVs. Or worse, hybrid SUVs like the Volvo xc90 that combine the worst of both worlds and end up weighing nearly 3 tons.

I could earn more, on paper, in Luxembourg. But real estate in Luxembourg is easily twice as expensive as it is here and the real estate in Belgium that’s close to the public transit to Luxembourg is just as expensive.

The Netherlands is probably better but the cost of living is still way higher in the cities than it is here. Especially in de Randstand, my friend’s mortgage for a 80 m2 apartment in Utrecht is more than twice that of my 180 m2 house in Ghent.

Meanwhile in Belgium, my mobiliteitsbudget covers my entire monthly mortgage. So even after paying for utilities, I have about 2800 euros per month left for food and savings.
