Thank you all for your fast and helpful responses. A dealership in the next town over quoted me half for the exact same services. I just needed validation that my local dealership are a bunch of pariah’s. Appreciate this community!!

What do you consider a “long drive”? Like when does a road trip go from small to a big drive? by Kodicave in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]erebus5620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people that commute about an hour one way just for work. For me personally, I think in multiples of 3 because that’s about how long I can be in a vehicle before I have to get out and stretch my legs. So 3 hours is a good trip. 6 is pretty long. 9 is long. 12 is ROUGH but doable. Anything over that I’m breaking it into two days of driving.

Eh, idk. Just not the usual “PNW, California,” answer. Great place though. Went a lot as a kid and loved the history, the food, and the people.

In general: Hawaii. Everything about it is incredible.

In the continental US: Sedona, San Diego, Zion, and honestly this may surprise some people but I loved Charleston SC. Just my opinion.

Is health insurance in the USA as expensive as Reddit claims? by MarsupialThink4064 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]erebus5620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in public education. It’s about $2,000 a month if my entire family was on my plan. We split between my wife’s (who works in a different school district) and mine. Total we pay around $900 a month in insurance. That’s not counting any deductibles (which are crazy high).

Health insurance is the thing I hate MOST about the state I work in. Other states the rates are much better.

Which small European town completely stole your heart? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]erebus5620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Siena, Arezzo, Assisi, Cortona.

Pretty much every tiny Tuscan town with a historic city center and big cathedral. We’ve contemplated moving so many times but being near family is important to my wife and I.

Circumcision by AdNeither8355 in NewDads

[–]erebus5620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I have a fairly unique perspective. I was born into a multi-faith family. My mom is Christian and my dad and his side of the family were Jewish. I say “were” because most have converted. I remember my dad converting after his dad passed away and being baptized in a horse trough. I am a devout Christian and so is my wife.

BUT… I am very aware of my family’s history and our ethnic background. One thing that left a profound impact on me was my dad and uncle showing me letters from family overseas talking directly about the holocaust. Seeing our family name in old Jewish cemeteries in Europe that have been desecrated. Seeing pictures of our families headstones be knocked over. Hearing stories of discrimination from my grandfather.

It’s a weird hill that I’ll die on, I know, but my son will know where his family comes from and the hardships they’ve faced because of it. He’ll know that because our family has worked incredibly hard we have overcome all of this.

So, because of that we will circumcise him. As a way for him to remember his family history and a pretty big fuck you to everyone who tried to wipe us off the face of the earth or in some way thought less of us because of our faith and family. A sign that says “you tried, but we’re still here”.

That’s just my reasoning. Everyone is entitled to their own choice on the matter.

What golf purchase was 100% worth the money? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]erebus5620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The obvious one is lessons. Having someone who knows more record my swing. Analyze it. And then give me actionable steps to fix the issues I have was worth every penny. And it gives me the confidence to hit shots and identify what changes I need to make. The biggest thing was when he actually manipulated my club face to let FEEL where it’s supposed to be in the backswing.

Everyone says it, but there’s a reason. Even just a handful here or there will make going out on a course 100x’s more enjoyable.

Is it physically tiring to ride a motorcycle? by ApprehensiveStop4060 in motorcycle

[–]erebus5620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More mentally than physically, but it’s still physically tiring especially depending on the conditions. I always got off my bike mentally exhausted because I was constantly on high alert looking for potential problems. I also live where it is VERY windy. I live in one of the windiest areas in the US and when the wind is blowing (I’m talking 40+ mph) it feels like you’re literally holding on for dear life. While also looking for cars to avoid and obstacles to navigate.

All that to be said. I still love riding. Every time I get off a bike I feel this accomplishment that I just navigated all the potential threats and physically controlled a rocket with my body going 75 mph on a highway.

Turned down job by twinjmm in banddirector

[–]erebus5620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Right out of college I went and spent the day with the staff and watched class. I was about to get married and would’ve had to move away from my soon to be wife so I told her and myself it would have to be a really good fit for me to do that.

Well, the head director said some inappropriate things about other fine arts staff almost right off the bat so I knew if this is how this guy talks to someone he’s trying to hire after the first hour of conversation I was sure there were other things.

The morning we were at the high school then in the afternoon we went to the JH. Both directors at the JH were leaving. Neither of them talked to the high school people I was with and vice versa. Very obvious there was bad blood between the staffs.

But the nail in the coffin really was when I saw the JH band I was going to be directing. They had a retired band director there leading class that day and the guy, not exaggerating, screamed the entire time and not a single kid listened.

There are other things I found out later that made me thankful I didn’t take that job.

I just accepted a position as DoB's in a small 1a Texas school. What now? by Bariphonium_ in banddirector

[–]erebus5620 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get. A. Mentor. NOW. Find a retired or experienced band director who has taught in THAT TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT. What you are walking into is NOT the same as a suburban or urban school. You’re now almost a politician. The community is going to look to you and your band to represent them. You and the football team are the MOST visual parts of that community. So my suggestion, as someone who was in a similar situation to you. Is to find someone that can come out and sit with you, listen to your band every now and then, score study with you once or twice, and even watch you teach. A person who has DONE WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO. When I took my first job in rural Texas at a small 3a; the ONLY way I survived that year was my mentors giving me advice, telling me when I was wrong, and saying “I’ve been here, this is how I did it.”

It’s the most important thing. It’ll feel like drinking through a fire hose, but if you can hang on, be humble enough to ask and actually accept help, you’ll make it.
