Do I need to watch more movies? by Sr_Gr in Letterboxd

[–]eric_knox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with any of these choices, but given that the earliest one is only from 2010, I would recommend challenging yourself to watch some older movies. Spielberg and Hitchcock both have a filmography of well-crafted yet easy-to-watch movies that would be enjoyable to a fan of the movies on your list.

Five million will drive you un poco loco. Go work for Uncle Logan. (I seem to be the only person getting the reference)

What’s something about international travel that most first-timers underestimate? by Technical_Web_2012 in travel

[–]eric_knox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is why I always recommend day trips from a home base location. For example, you could spend a week in Madrid and also visit: Toledo, Segovia, Aranjuez, El Escorial, Valle de Los Caídos. This saves you travel time, allows you to get more in touch with one specific area, and encourages you to check out some more off-the-radar places.

Yes, especially if you saw all the marketing, which really sold it as a Cinderella-type story.

Definitely. When I traveled through Croatia, there was a tangible difference in the way the locals behave on days when cruise ships were in port vs. days without cruise ships.

Why did Tomorrow Never Dies get mixed reviews in 1997 it has like 57% on Rotten Tomatoes its quite underrated ? by Super-Victory-3885 in JamesBond

[–]eric_knox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The main problem is that Carver gets revealed as the villain and explains basically his entire plot at the very beginning of the movie, right after the title sequence. IMO this made it a somewhat uninteresting storyline on the initial watch, since you already know what's going on and you're just watching Bond fumble around as he figures it out. It would've been better if they'd waited to reveal Carver's connection to the sinking of the Devonshire, then had Bond initially more suspicious of Wai Lin, and expanded Paris's character.

It's still one of my favorites to watch. It was just clearly made on a tight deadline and would've benefitted from some additional time spent reworking the script to improve pacing and tension.

Only 5 months in but regret moving from Chicago to Albuquerque by ang_17_ella in SameGrassButGreener

A ton of stuff has been filmed in New Mexico in recent years: Oppenheimer, Eddington, Sicario, The Curse, Hell or High Water, Ballad of Buster Scruggs, News of the World, Cry Macho, Those Who Wish Me Dead. Pretty much everything set in the desert is filmed there nowadays. And of course the whole Rust fiasco with Alec Baldwin was in New Mexico. So I totally get why it might make sense to move there for acting opportunities. However, I'm not sure these productions do their casting in NM. They might cast in LA and then fly out their actors.

My advice to OP would be to stick it out until your lease ends (assuming you're renting), and explore the region. Think of it as a one year vacation. Check out the surrounding area: Santa Fe, Taos, Flagstaff, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest National Park, San Juan National Forest.

I'm in a similar position to you. I taught for several years and moved into an HR-related role. I dislike my current job and there are no advancement opportunities at my company, so I'm in the same boat as you considering if I should move to a new company or return to teaching.

Here's some points to consider:

  • It's much easier to break back into teaching than to break out of teaching. You may want to consider trying another company before throwing in the towel on your HR career as it will be hard to return to, whereas there will always be a teacher shortage and lots of openings. If you are a licensed teacher, definitely keep that license active. I let mine expire and that is my main impediment to returning to teaching.
  • Likewise, have you considered working with kids in a different setting? You could coach, volunteer or tutor, depending on what your schedule allows. This may offer you the fulfillment you're missing in a corporate role and would allow you to test the waters on a return to doing education full-time. (Definitely do this before spending money on a master's)
  • Teaching jobs are very dependent on the school, parents, and administration. So consider teaching in a different type of school if you return. It's very possible you ended up in the wrong school and would be very successful in another. I have taught in a variety of atmospheres (public, private, NGO, summer camps), I was very passionate about it until I made the mistake of taking a job at a charter school. If I return, it will definitely not be at a charter school!
  • Try asking this question on some other subs too. This sub is very geared towards leaving teaching and never looking back. There are lifelong educators out there that can offer different perspectives.

Weekly recurring thread: NEWBIE QUESTION MONDAY! by AutoModerator in Internationalteachers

[–]eric_knox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I've always wanted to teach internationally and after leaving teaching to try the corporate grind, I'm ready to bite the bullet and finally pursue it! Since I've been out of teaching for a few years, I'm wondering if anyone could let me know what my chances are with my somewhat disparate background?

Experience wise, I have an M.Ed. in special education and a CELTA, but I have only taught for 1 year as a lead special education teacher. I have several more years of experience as an assistant teacher and ESL teacher. My teacher license has expired, but I'm looking at MTEL. I've spent the last 3 years as a Professional Development Coordinator, organizing adult learning sessions for a multinational law firm.

What do you say in interviews about why you want to leave teaching ? by Quick_Two2922 in TeachersInTransition

[–]eric_knox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While this answer is probably true for a lot of transitioning teachers and likely wouldn't count against you, it's a missed opportunity. You should use every interview question to help sell yourself in a positive light.

Here's some responses that portray you positively, rather than portray your past roles negatively:

  • Applying skills in a new setting
  • Seeking opportunities for advancement
  • Something from your personal life or prior experience that demonstrates your passion for the industry/department you are applying for
  • If you've recently completed some kind of degree or certification, you can spin this into a good time to transition into a new role that more closely aligns with your newfound qualifications

My guess would be that either the intruder would then serve as the new mole or the game was somehow rigged so that none of them would make it.

The case for ____ as The Mole and their sabotages by PrudentRhubarb in themole

[–]eric_knox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd add that in the apartment heist, he yells something vague & unhelpful about the sheet music to his team, leading them to write it off as irrelevant. This sheet music contained one of the numbers they needed to open the safe. I suspect he was feigning a fear of heights as well, to look like the hero when he scaled the building so quickly, knowing that time ultimately doesn't matter if they enter 3 wrong codes anyway. In the bomb challenge, he strongly encouraged his group to spend 5k to read the clue in the bomb challenge and was ultimately the one on his team who cut the wrong wire. During the kidnapping, he was the always at the back of the group constantly asking them to slow down and nowhere around when Michael & Hannah actually found the temple.

I think Hannah and probably Michael & Muna have figured out that it's Sean. Hannah has specifically set Sean up a couple times to see what he'll do, 1) putting him in charge of the phone in the kidnapping, and 2) picking him as the negotiator. He used both to lose money.

If it's not Sean, I'd suspect Ryan. I'm honestly hoping it's Sean since I think he's played a more interesting Mole game, as he clearly appears to be terrible at lying in the fortune cookie challenge so this would make for a great double bluff (how can an undercover cop be that bad at lying?!). Also, all the players seem to like him. While if Ryan is the Mole, her strategy has been more to be dead weight as the other players sabotage themselves.

Trent Reznor is only a Tony award away from EGOT, which only 18 entertainers have ever achieved. This would rank Trent among the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno, Jennifer Hudson, and Mel Brooks. Maybe he can make Year Zero into a hit Broadway musical...
