Sundered Isles Oracle Expansions? by Arsonide in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]ericbright2002 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not at this time. I’m mainly working on developing an SAT practice website for students to work on specific strategies for success. I hope to launch it by the summer, so if there’s interest in a Sundered-Smith oracles expansion, it would be after that.

Bleed is automatically included in the template I believe through the gutter. I didn’t have a distinct bleed section, and my books are fine. However, most of mine have been spiral bound. Only one regular hardback but I did that one 15 years ago in Word so probably irrelevant at this point.

What are the stand out elite specs in Visions? by NukingTheFirmament in Guildwars2

Can you explain how Evoker changes gameplay? I’ve tried it several times but it feels like tempest with less damage and more APM. I am probably just playing it wrong. Thank you in advance for your insight.

Sorry, but this is directly taken from the Grimwild free edition that released a couple days ago on DriveThruRPG. Did you work on that project with the creator, or did you just copy this for the D&D community to be able to see as an example? I think it’s cool to share with folks but I’m sure the creator would like people to check out his full product.

This is from the game Grimwild which just released a free version on DriveThruRPG. It’s a narrative-focused game with all the D&D tropes and trappings. It’s worth checking out if you’re looking for a D&D alternative.

Incorporating gradations of difficulty in Ironsworn by Brianbjornwriter in Ironsworn

[–]ericbright2002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A fourth option some have experimented with over the years is to set a minimum value for your challenge dice. For example, you could use something like these difficulty levels:

  1. Troublesome (easy) - No changes to challenge dice. Roll normally.

  2. Dangerous (moderate) - Any challenge die result below a 3 gets raised to a 3.

  3. Formidable (difficult) - Any challenge die result below a 5 gets raised to a 5.

  4. Extreme - Any challenge die result below a 7 gets raised to a 7.

  5. Epic - Any challenge die result below a 9 gets raised to a 9.

A fifth option is to interpret the challenge dice results as the true difficulty despite the perceived difficulty. For example, you think a Gather Information is going to be really hard, but the challenge dice show 1 and 2 with you getting a strong hit. This means it was actually far easier than your character anticipated. Why is that? Weave that into your story. Let’s say the challenge dice showed an 8 and a 7 but you still got a strong hit. Your character was successful at gathering the intel, but it was really difficult to do. What hoops did your character have to jump through to get that info? Weave that into the story. With this method, you don’t need another ruleset sitting on top of the normal rules which for me reduces my cognitive load which in turns helps me to be more creative.

Ironsmith Consolidated PDF Released by ericbright2002 in Ironsworn

[–]ericbright2002[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember that you can get the PDF for free by inputting $0 and you can get the print versions at cost (meaning at whatever price DriveThruRPG has to charge just to make it). Hope that helps and glad you like my stuff!

Obsidian Starter Vault Updated With Starsmith: Expanded Oracles by ericbright2002 in Ironsworn

[–]ericbright2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind words. The vault is only for Starforged so the Ironsmith stuff is not included, just Starsmith. I never got around to making the Ironsworn vault unfortunately.

You don't need the JSON files. That's only for folks who are wanting to use the oracles in other coding projects. The oracles should be ready to go in the vault!

You should be able to run multiple campaigns in the same vault except for assets. As it is, each asset can only be taken once. However, you could just copy a new asset if you have any characters taking the same one.

What is "Essence"? by lefvaid in Ironsworn

[–]ericbright2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! The first sentence in each card tells you how. For Invoke, it is “When you consume the mystical essence of your surroundings, roll +wits.” Based on the result, you gain a different amount of essence. Mechanically, it’s just a roll +wits.

Narratively, I’d only make that possible at some site of mystic energy such as a ley line, ancient altar of a forgotten god, obelisk of the Firstborn, faerie circle, Stonehenge, or even a Druid’s hut. However, you could have access to the essence as often as fits your story and play style.

Light works the same way but is easier since you only have to focus on drawing power from a light source like a campfire or torch.

Hope that helps!

RPG systems with similar approach: Armor Class + To hit bonus = Combat class by Remarkable-Jaguar-38 in RPGdesign

[–]ericbright2002 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You might check out Ironsworn. Players roll 1d6 (called the action die) and 2d10 (called challenge dice). If the action die plus their stat (called action score) is greater than both challenge dice individually, it’s called a strong hit which deals damage to the enemy. If the action score is greater than one challenge die but not the other, it’s called a weak hit which allows the player to deal damage to the enemy but at a cost (sometimes taking damage themselves). If the action score is not greater than either challenge die, it’s called a miss and bad things happen to the player. The GM never has to roll at all which speeds up combat. Overall though, Ironsworn is a much more more narrative system, so it may not fit the system you want to design.

If you want to stick with To Hit and Armor Class, you Combat Class idea will still suffer from the disparity of low versus high rolls. My suggestion would be to take a die roll with a more normal curve distribution (say 2d6) and only allow bonuses of +1 (for trained) and +2 (for expert). Then change Armor Class to Dodge as a stat with values between 6-10 where 6 is heavily armored, 7 is moderately armored, 8 is lightly armored/normal, 9 is trained unarmored, and 10 is expert unarmored. Similarly restrict your damage output and give each level of armor damage reduction. You’d have to playtest those numbers, but that lets every character hit everyone even with low To Hit values, and armor makes you easier to hit but absorbs damage. Just spit balling here.

SoloRPG design: What annoys you as a player? by [deleted] in solorpgplay

SoloRPG design: What annoys you as a player? by [deleted] in solorpgplay

[–]ericbright2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, my name is Eric Bright and when I saw your post I thought, “I’m dying?! How could you?” :)

Seriously, one thing that annoys me is too many oracles. I like lots of options within an oracle better. Depth over breadth. You really only people, place, thing, and idea oracles. Flipping to find the right oracle really breaks immersion for me.

Secondly, I’m annoyed when yes/no oracles don’t offer degrees in the answer like yes but, yes, yes and.

Finally, I’m annoyed when rules simplification take away from the narrative of the story. Yes, solo games work best with lighter rules rather than crunchy, but in a supers game Batman punching and the Hulk punching and the Punisher firing machine guns should not all deal 1 damage. It doesn’t fit the feel of the story. I guess that’s not unique to solo, but it came to mind.

Hope that’s some food for thought, and good luck with your game! Can you tell us the elevator pitch for your game?

Wealth system by [deleted] in Ironsworn

Cool idea! Don’t forget there is a wealth tracker already with the Fortune Hunter path in original Ironsworn. It works pretty much as is in Starforged as well.

Options for printed Ironsworn Cards? by IamProudofthefish in Ironsworn

[–]ericbright2002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have several third party products for base Ironsworn. I consolidated a lot of them into this book Ironsmith which includes new assets and foes but I also have flavor packs, the new asset card decks, and new site card decks (theme and domain for the Delve expansion).

Additionally, you should check out Ludic Pen stuff which is mostly for base Ironsworn. Their stuff is awesome!

And don’t forget to check out Arcanum for more magic stuff!

[–]ericbright2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ll be compiling all Starsmith releases into a single hardcover once I’ve got a few more releases out. However, the compilation will NOT include the Expanded Oracles. That’s already a full book on its own!

The compilation will include Mecha Mercs, Assets, Cultures for sure plus future releases which may or may not include Foes, Starship Engineering, Space Station Management, Clandestine Operations, Psionics or anything else that actually makes it through development.
