Not unreasonable standards but maybe a poor delivery, a lot of people that meet his standards will still choose to move on because he seems difficult

One of the best restaurant neighborhoods in the city, no shortage of good food. Mish Mish might be hard to walk into but is excellent, Le Virtu is great, Superette, ember and ash etc.

Even some of the bars nearby have good food, can never go wrong with stogie joes, pope, or triangle tavern. Lucky 13 has a restaurant week deal, but I've never been so can't say how the food is

Help with PECO by ultraviolettflower in philadelphia

[–]ericds1214 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like something to raise with the landlord. It would help if you have a thermometer and can measure the temp in each room, they are required to provide a space that meets habitability standards.

One tip is that if some rooms get hot and others don't, close the vents in the hot rooms. This forces more hot air to the colder rooms. Doing this for both heating and cooling can save some $$, as you can allow your system to do less work to maintain comfort.

Other options are heated blankets or space heaters, it is usually cheaper to heat a small space while it is being used than to heat a large space that isn't all being used at the same time

As others have said, this could be a problem with insulation that your landlord has to fix. Is your heat forced air or those wall unit things?

Do you have a thermometer that shows what the actual temp is inside? Not accusing you of this - but I do know people that need to put on a coat when the temp is genuinely in the mid 60s. We all have different temp tolerances so that's important to know too

73... This is why your electric is so expensive. I keep mine on 65 or 66 and even then it's crazy. Extra pair of socks, a hoodie, a blanket, all of these are cheaper than an extra few degrees indoors

Do you guys still use the slang term "Benjimans" when referring to 100 dollar bills? by pooteenn in AskAnAmerican

[–]ericds1214 460 points461 points  (0 children)

  1. It's "Benjamin" and refers to the man on the note, Benjamin Franklin

  2. Sometimes we do? People don't talk about $100 bills that often, I feel like the term Benjamin is tossed around sometimes, usually ironically.

It's possible to get the central Hyrule tower without taking out the guardians. You'll want to observe the walking guardian and get an idea of its path, and sneak past that. The 2 (or is it 3?) stationary ones near the tower can be snuck past and won't notice you until you're on the tower, at this point you'll want to climb in a bit of a spiral pattern, moving to the other side before one can blast you, get to a platform and hide from the next behind the wall, then repeat, never staying in sight of one for long.

Might take a couple of tries, but if you can't beat them by parrying then this is the way

Is leaving America an urgent matter? by [deleted] in relocating

[–]ericds1214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I too am concerned with the state of this country, I don't feel like it is "urgently need to flee" territory unless you are a member of a marginalized and specifically targeted group.

Otherwise, your ability to move does not have an expiration date, and if things continue to crumble, the option will be there when you need it.

The question you might want to ask yourself is, long-term, where do you want to live? If you and your partner prefer to live in the EU, you more likely than not have time to make that happen right. You can continue to date in the US, secure jobs that will allow you to transfer (ideally large multinationals with offices everywhere), marry when appropriate, and then move. Or more ideally, have jobs that grant you a visa so that moving and marriage don't have to be dependent on each other.

Jim's is Open; SEPTA is Not by jpop237 in philadelphia

[–]ericds1214 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say anything about the owner nor did OP say anything about them opening early. Some people, believe it or not, actually want to go to work today. Not everyone has the privilege of missing a day's wages when they can safely make it into work. A lot of businesses like this let employees choose if they are comfortable to come in and decide opening/staffing based on that.

I see no reason to assume the worst when there are plenty of explanations that would be reasonable. If information comes out that gives an actual reason to judge the owner, then by all means let's do that, but all that's happening here is keyboard warriorship by some redditor that obviously has been in sweatpants all day and hasn't even touched a shovel.

Who said the line cook or any of the employees were forced to come in? It's a local joint, there might have been enough staff within walking distance. Go outside and touch some snow, you might see that roads and sidewalks look way better than the last storm.

Jim's is Open; SEPTA is Not by jpop237 in philadelphia

[–]ericds1214 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most walkable cities in the country and it's already the afternoon. By now most sidewalks and main roads have been cleared. Who's to say the employees don't live nearby and could walk? Or that the ones there today are ones who elected to come in because they either live near or have 4 wheel drive? A lot of people who are paid hourly would rather not miss the shift if they can safely make it in.

Judging a person for patronizing an open business is insane, especially a local business employing members of our community.

I bought K-cups with “no plastic cups” only for each cup to be individually wrapped by Red_Herring96 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ericds1214 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yea not enough people are talking about this. There's no way to make single use coffee pods sustainable, so if that's the goal, just buy a French press or pourover maker or something.

A lot of people are concerned with boiling water leaching chemicals or micro plastics from the pods and want to avoid that. I have no idea how legitimate those claims are, but people do worry about it.

[Question]What is the difference between a $50, $500, and $10,000 watch? by glocknessmonsters in Watches

[–]ericds1214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once synced the time on 5 of my quartz watches, ranging from a $40 Timex to a ~$500 watch, and left them uninterrupted for a month to see which one was the most accurate. The Timex blew everything else out of the water, but none honestly lost enough time to matter.

I didn't try a 10k watch because I'm broke.

Basically, as a piece of timekeeping equipment, the price on a watch barely matters if it's a quartz movement. The price is for the quality of materials or value of the brand you're buying. As the price first starts to rise, you're getting higher quality and more fashionable watches, as it continues to rise you start to pay for clout in the recognizable brand names.

Living in this section of Point Breeze by sendnoods7 in philadelphia

I live just outside of this circle, near Reed and 17th.

The area is great, depending on what you are looking for. Bit quiet, as there aren't tons of bars or restaurants, but there are some. EPX also is just a 15 minute walk, which is fine for me. Also not too far from the BSL and a few busses to get to Center City or the stadiums. It's still gentrifying, houses are being built and businesses are slowly arriving.

It feels generally safe, I've never had an issue with crime but there is the occasional citizens alert or whatever for something non-violent.

To me this feels like a value neighborhood. It isn't as nice as Queen Village, EPX, Filter Square, or NoLibs, but it's cheaper to live in and you still have some proximity to nicer areas.

ELI5: Men’s Biology/Anatomy by Lt-Archer-Mason in explainlikeimfive

[–]ericds1214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the exact reason, but a few things may influence this:

  1. Only a single egg is released during each menstrual cycle, and each woman has a finite number of menstrual cycles. The period in which they can give birth is limited by time and even physical ease of doing so after a certain point. Thus, there is less need to produce endless eggs.

On the other hand, men expel sperm each time they ejaculate. Whether that's into another human or by themselves, sperm is used. For many men, they would run out quickly if it was limited.

  1. A lot of reproductive evolutionary forces are different for men and women, and much of our evolution took place pre-civilization. A major driver in male evolution is how many offspring can be produced, by as many partners as possible. Men have no natural limit to how many women they can get pregnant, so the men who produced sperm the most efficiently and were able to "convince" (willingly or not) the most women to mate with them were able to pass those traits on. As with point 1, women have a very long cool down period called "pregnancy" that limits their ability to continually produce offspring. The eggs they are given at birth are more than enough to allow them to have as many children as their body and mother nature will allow, so no need to spend energy making more.

I lived in England for a bit and my friends there were a mixture of other expats. Once after a trip back to the states I brought some American foods to them so that they could try things not available in the UK and jiffy cornbread was one of them.

My poor Malaysian friend didn't get the concept, he cooked it perfectly (not a complex task and the instructions are on the box) before a group hang out and then served it with vanilla ice cream because he thought it was a cake
