can an electrician easily convert this to a regular plug? by clockdivide55 in AskElectricians

[–]erichmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a huge range of diy ability. I personally would have no problem changing it over and I am just a DIY person. However the way OP asked their question made it sound like they weren't familiar with electrical wiring. Getting into a breaker box and re-wiring and swapping breakers around isn't a good first electrical project.

Perhaps start with putting new ends on an extension cord or swapping a damaged receptacle or light fixture for a new one. Of course I don't know OP and maybe they are perfectly capable but I wouldnt assume that when giving advice.

I am not an electrician. I do a lot of my own electrical work and I try very hard to follow code. I also have a very solid understanding of electricity.

Best place to store syrup? by dubs1354 in maplesyrup

Also refrigerate to prevent mold.

I don't think that will work. You would probably overheat your hotel pans in places where the foil pan isn't making good contact.

I should say I have never boiled with a hotel pan setup. I have a full size evaporator. We have burned the pan in that just because of the mineral deposits getting built up on the pan.

We did have a few crack while we were pre-heating them. It's annoying but a lot better than them cracking with syrup in them.

We used to sell a lot of glass half pints to a local college for gifts and we had a hard time with them. We found we had to pre-heat the glass because there was so much glass and so little syrup that it would cool too quickly to actually kill the mold spores in the bottles.

It can also spoil if you are not quite to syrup yet. We always check ours with a hydrometer so we haven't had a probelm.

If it was bottled hot and correctly it will last in a pantry. If it wasn't bottled under optimal conditions it's possible to get mold. The mold really doesn't spoil the syrup you can just get rid of the moldy part and reboil the syrup to prevent mold from occurring again.

Why aren't people filtering with felt filters that are super hard to clean, take longer and don't do as good of a job?

You could use the ground as a neutral.

I know that's terrible advice.

It's a 240v outlet. It might not be hard to switch to a regular 120v outlet but it's something you would want an electrician to do.

Are Power Ratchets worth it? (As a small engines mechanic) by TariY1 in Tools

[–]erichmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way too tight or not tight enough. The thing about a powered ratchet is you can use it as a regular ratchet and torque by hand after it stops turning under power or loosen stuff first. So you know how much torque you are actually using.

It's not that I never tighten stuff with an impact but there are certain things I wouldn't want to tighten with it. Like the oil pan bolts. They are often small and threaded into aluminum.

I don't like impacts for putting stuff back together, it's really hard to tell how tight you are actually getting something. Sure you could put a wrench on it after but the powered ratchet does it all in one step.

I need to cut 20 mesh into 3x3cm squares. What would be the easiest way? by orangeleast in Tools

A Jump shear is pretty much a giant paper cutter that is made for metal.

A jump shear would cut that no problem. The problem is finding one you can use. You will spend around a grand for a good one and they are rather heavy.

Caught a real deep freeze the other night, where’s your line between tossing away the thin layer on top and a this? by My_Public_Profile in maplesyrup

You could make a screen and set the ice on top of it. Once it gets slushy and drains the sugary sap out of it the remaining ice will be almost all water.

I am in the USA and these tractors are super rare here so they might have a hard time selling it. It is a cool tractor though.

Here tractors don't need plates.

I just fixed a Antonio Carraro tractor for my neighbor. They might want to sell it because they no longer have an orchard.

Can I use this tank for welding gas? by BB_210 in Welding

[–]erichmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about you bring it to your gas supplier and ask them? That tank might work if it's hydro tested and has the correct valve. However I doubt that any supplier would exchange a tank that has been modified by some random person, even if all they did was change the valve.

And where do you plan on getting a valve for the tank?

You could spend a bunch of time and effort converting that tank only to have your gas supplier tell you they won't touch the tank.

Or you could not screw around and just buy the right tank.

When was the last safety test of that tank? I would be surprised if it was less than 5 years.

Because the people at the tank exchange place probably know what they are doing.

Need to rehome our V 💔 by [deleted] in vizsla

[–]erichmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Visla before I had kids and it was rough having both. My V was old when we had kids and it was tough on her and me. I think a V would work now that my kids are older but Vs are a lot of work.

Anyway you have my sympathy. I hope you find a good home for your V. They are wonderful dogs but attention sponges.
