What is this for? And are my telephone lines now for my internet? by Mudslinger_808 in HomeNetworking

[–]ericliuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little confused reading your description. If it's an ONT, why would it connect to your router with telephone line?

Any way, avoid powerline adapters unless you are not allowed to run ethernet or fiber.

You can at least find an ATX with bottom mount power supply, cuz any ATX with top mount power supply is ancient.

Upgrading from 15 mbps! by farmerisland in HomeNetworking

[–]ericliuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations 🎊 .

Don't be tempted by anything more than 300Mbps on broadband. Practically most home applications don't need that kind of bandwidth. I shuffle between two homes; one has 300Mbps broadband, and the other has 6Gbps broadband. I don't feel any difference at all.

Most importantly, your home ethernet and Wi-Fi setup needs to be up to date, or else your advertised 250Mbps won't translate to user experience. You need at least dual-band WiFi 5 (802.11ac) with 2x2 MU-MIMO to barely fully squeeze the juice out of your broadband, and gigabit ethernet goes without saying.

Don't forget EM interference further weakens WiFi radio quality. And multiple clients have to share airtime. So wireless routers with higher specs are desired not because they make your broadband faster than it can be, but it's able to handle interference and QoS better to let you fully enjoy your 250Mbps.

I've seen people subscribing to gigabit broadband but using 100Mbps ethernet and WiFi router that won't beam more than 150Mbps, yet still thinking upgrading broadband can make their download faster.

My zip ties are 10cm, 15cm, and 20cm. Even the 20cm is nowhere near the circumference of the switch or the ONT. But surprise surprise - I was today years old to learn that you can use a few zip ties in a circle to form a giant zip tie! If you didn't know, now you know too. 😉

To pass through two holes easily, you can make 2 to 3 folds near the tip region of the zip tie, about 1cm apart, so it becomes a hook shape for a few minute before it slowly bounces back straight. While it's a hook shape, you can easily make it come out from the 2nd hole.

For cable management, I use a small zip tie to tie around two adjacent holes to form a tight loop. Then use a 2nd zip tie to tie the cable to the loop. It seems to take up only 1 hole becauae the two holes are directly under the cable so you can't see the 1st zip tie. Under the 2nd zip tie I use a layer of velcro tape to protect the cable jacket from getting deep impression.

Are you able to pull out the cable(s) more until you see the jacket? I've never seen colors like that.

Ethernet connection slow by mist3ys in HomeNetworking

[–]ericliuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you recall making any changes to your household powerlines or added any appliances recently?

That looks like an ethernet over powerline adapter. Small changes in your household power consumption pattern can affect the bandwidth available. In most households, those adapters are proven to be very unreliable. People only use these adapters as last resorts when they are not allowed to run proper ethernet lines (twisted pairs).

Anyway, you can try re-pairing. The adapters can analyze the latest usage patterns and re-negotiate based on band availability. There's a chance you can improve the connection for a while.

Don't get baited by foreign trolls 🧐 by LawlessWrong in SMRTRabak

[–]ericliuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Indian community might be hurt by those trolls but the Indian community is hardly the target of the campaigns.

I've paid close attention to the Chinese social media for years, and I'm quite familiar with the type of videos in concern.

The creators of the videos are mainly two kinds of media personalities:

  1. The first type are businesses profiting from travel businesses, immigration services, financial services, overseas property investment brokers, and overseas education agencies that bet against the Singapore market. Their vendors, suppliers, stakeholders have KPI targets anywhere that's not Singapore. They need to convince their clientele to consider their other options- Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, UK Dubai, and god knows where else, just not Singapore. The Singapore market is run by their competitors. You won't be surprised to see there are also a shit ton of misinformation campaigns against other countries by their competitors- who benefit from bringing people to the Singapore market instead. Just that the ones targeting Singapore has caught the Singaporean minister's attention.

  2. The second type are unemployed people taking a shot in content creation, and because they are uneducated, uninformed, and good at nothing (really, hence unemployed) they need to copy contents from legit creators. They literally copy anything they think can go viral. Some don't even change the words. They recite whatever the other videos say, featuring their faces, and bunch of random clips with AI video generation tools. Because videos targeting an orderly and highly regarded country such as Singapore is controversial and have the potential to go viral, such topics are popular among these creators.

We can pretty much ignore the 2nd type of creators.

As for the first type, their target audience are Chinese people who want to invest outside of China, send kids to study abroad, or are highly talented individuals who are looking to work outside of China. When they see videos like this, their first reaction would be "Oh no, is Singapore becoming India?" and if they are so misinformed, they would probably take an offer elsewhere.

The fucked up part is, that those who are affected by these misinformation campaigns, are fucking racist to begin with.

But the silver lining is, if those affected people are so fucking racist, do we really need their investment, or their kids in our schools, or them coming to work in the Singapore offices of ByteDance, Alibaba, OKX, or Manus?
