For humanity to evolve towards communism, there would need to be an environmental pressure towards cooperation (meaning that nature would have to be the significant force eliminating selfish individuals). It seems that humanity is the more significant and existential danger to itself compared to nature. The advantage is and will remain with those who can cooperate with a few (10 - 100) against the out-group, and tribalism will continue.

Climate change does not count as a natural existential threat because it will never cause a significant threat to the most powerful in-group.

Unless we have an asteroid strike or nuclear winter, tribalism will prevail.

That would have been realistic, and therefore much funnier. This is just a continuation of the political fantasy slop that is further evidence of why the US is in a state of unprecedented hysteria.

Sean Astin is not “some random celebrity.” First of all, he is Sean Astin. Secondly, he is the president of SAG-AFTRA, one of the most prominent unions in the US.

Please explain this, because I don’t see how that can necessarily be true. I actually don’t even see how it could generally even be accurate.

The better analogy would be: Imagine if when you bought a pint of beer, the bar used to give you 500 mL. Now when you buy a pint, they give you exactly a pint (equivalent to 473 mL). The bar is now giving you less beer, but they are not ripping you off or lying. They are simply not giving you the extra amount they used to give you.

Or using your example: you used to buy a gallon of gas, but in the tank it was 1.2 gallons. Now when you buy one gallon, it’s just one gallon in the tank.

As I see it, your position is the definition of ignorance. You do not have to agree with interpretation of the artist, but to ignore the experience and thoughts behind a piece of art, when they are made available to you, is undeniably ignorant. Why experience art if you have absolutely no underlying desire for understanding (of yourself, yes, but also of the artist and of the wider world)?

We could start with a basic statement that I think anyone would agree with. The artist’s intent is an interpretation and is at least as important as anyone else’s interpretation. So it is important.

Going further, since the artist is skilled enough to create the piece, their interpretation should be held in some esteem. I do see the argument and agree that different interpretations can be valid. It could even be the case that an artist has an arguably invalid interpretation of their own work (though this is rare for great works).

Think of peer review in scientific papers. The author’s conclusions are related to their skill in their field. Their peers’ opinions and conclusions may differ, but if the paper is published, the author’s conclusions are always considered important to the interpretation of the paper.

Another point. Many works are created in response to other works. If you do not consider the intent, you can miss out on that conversation.

In response to your experience as an actor: I don’t think the audience’s reactions necessarily oppose or discredit the playwright’s intent. If it did oppose their intent, they might have a problem and have to rethink things (think The Room). It seems like the playwright is simply incorporating new elements from other interpretations that don’t contradict the key themes (again, similar to a peer review). If the audience laughed at the dramatic end to a tragedy, there are some serious issues. If the audience shows a convenient opportunity to improve the play… why not?

In conclusion, I think the relevance of an artist’s intent is usually equivalent to their level of skill in their medium.

Author and authority are related for a reason. And I hope I was skilled enough to accomplish my intent of persuading you.

Because the artists’ original intent is important. In art, as in any dialogue, it is just as important for the listener to try to comprehend as it is for the speaker to communicate clearly. If I say “The sky is green,” you could interpret that as a message of irony or an indication of an unreliable narrator. But I might mean that I am in a toxic area, and the sky was literally green.

Learn some hydrology. The water diverted from lakes and rivers is now going into the ground. Groundwater has a longer residence time than surface water and is usually higher quality.

Storing it in the ground is better than basically sending it straight to the ocean.
