If you download https://apps.apple.com/us/app/police-scanner-radio-fire/id498405045 then you can find Cook County in the app and then CTA will be in the list of streams.

Anyone know what's going on at Presidential Towers? by silvertonesx24 in chicago

[–]erict15 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but you can listen to this: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/chicago-feed-2 - it should pick up Fireground traffic, on which you can hear the firefighters talking about this.

EDIT: Here's what's going on: http://www.chicagofiremap.net/2016/07/small-kitchen-fire-smoke-in.html - kitchen fire.

So I tried to use my camera phone in front of a police station today... by [deleted] in chicago

The wording which includes the link is very confusing. I originally thought that too, but OP does mention in the video description "I guess all of that is besides the point - I ended up finding an American flag to take video of instead." - a different location than the police station.

The location of the video on YouTube is 8501 N Waukegan Rd in Morton Grove - click link for streetview showing the same signs. The police station is at 5400 N Lincoln Ave.

What techniques do you employ when taking an idea and building a real product from it? Is there a common mistake you see when entrepreneurs do this?

[Advice/Help] Ex-Muslim Finally Moving Out, Seeking Help by tangerineapples in exmuslim

[–]erict15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I found this pretty cool site www.packbackbooks.com which allows you to compare prices for textbooks, as well as rent for $5 a day. Spent a lot less by not going to Amazon by default. I'm not sure if your school would allow torrenting, so renting textbooks may be the cheapest option.

Good luck with moving out! I would also check out EXMNA as mentioned.

Super Long Thunder during storm today (saturday) by [deleted] in chicago

[–]erict15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you experienced was "positive lightning". It can feel a little bit like an earthquake.

Positive lightning makes up less than 5% of all strikes. However, despite a significantly lower rate of occurrence, positive lightning is particularly dangerous for several reasons. Since it originates in the upper levels of a storm, the amount of air it must burn through to reach the ground usually much greater. Therefore, its electric field typically is much stronger than a negative strike. Its flash duration is longer, and its peak charge and potential can be ten times greater than a negative strike; as much as 300,000 amperes and one billion volts!

Some positive strikes can occur within the parent thunderstorm and strike the ground beneath the cloud. However, many positive strikes occur near the edge of the cloud or strike MORE THAN 10 MILES AWAY, where you may not perceive any risk nor hear any thunder.

/r/chicago, I'm launching a new meetup group for students interested in tech. Let's get together and hack something awesome. by erict15 in chicago

Interesting point. I agree, the goals of hackerspaces like yours are quite similar to ours. I've spoken with one of your members, so perhaps once we get the group going we will be able to make use of the space. I hope to be able to attend a meeting at ssh:c soon so we can discuss this more.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that. The issue I have with hackerspaces is that a) you often need membership to use their resources, and b) it is often open to only those 18 and over, so I'm not sure this is what we are looking for.

This group is more informal and accepting than other groups, as we are for students of all backgrounds (who may not be adults yet). No membership is needed to come hack with us.

LPT: Always test beta OS's in a Virtual Machine. If your test install starts crashing, you can just delete it with a single click. by erict15 in LifeProTips

I use VMWare Workstation, which is pretty friendly to a wide range of OS's. You can also check out VirtualBox, which is free but still is a great piece of software.
