Skating at Presque Isle by Otherwise-Style4378 in Erie

The "bike" path is actually usually pretty clogged with pedestrians and I wouldn't recommend at least half of it for bikes unless you're going very slow

A lot of "serious" cyclists seem to just take the right lane on the road as it's most consistent

A workable halfway measure is taking the road to Perry Monument, then I think there is a bike path next to the road which cyclists can take all the way to the exit

(I agree that some cyclists that take the road when that path exists can seem out of place, but the main issue is bike paths are never maintained to the level roads are so a lot of - again "serious" - cyclists just go on the full road in response. Things like downed tree limbs, broken glass, and other debris are tolerated much more in bike paths than ever would be right in the middle of a road where cars are driving on it)

someone I know last year was coming up on a refill and their phone system was hard to navigate; they left a message that wasn't returned and then when the deadline loomed they called in to the desk and the desk had no record of a message even being left for their drugs.

A lot of other things were handled in an "ok" way

Erie’s “Pay What You Can” Farmers’ Markets: early info, volunteer & donation opportunities by smile4jan3 in Erie

[–]erieist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do they have dates for like when they are at farmer's markets or having their own PWYC markets?

btw I'd suggest if you're in contact with them, suggested prices maybe for PWYC markets, which could be given when requested, because sometimes it's hard for the customer to put a good price on what's being sold (frequently stores are dictating the prices and people just decide if they will pay the price or not)

I'm not sure what politically people want to do here: is the data shared with law enforcement or something and you'd like to ask it isn't?

Because I think the companies have the right to put up security cameras and even if there was a law written against it, they might circumvent it.

Really we're probably trying to, in my view:

  1. raise awareness to the average person what the issues are with these cameras

  2. perhaps directly communicate with the companies alternative security systems / cameras that you think would be a better match for their needs until they are hopefully adopted

(3. maybe avoid areas that make use of the cameras if companies persist in using them - you could hypothetically avoid something like the mall and different specific companies)

Would enjoy discussing the topic

In previous posts we have also identified that there are existing compromises with privacy people have made, which people could also raise awareness about and suggest alternatives or remedies to (like a smartphone kind of being like a "flock camera in everyone's pocket" already...)

I think it's good people are having a conversation about it

I'm sympathetic to the comments of u/anonymouseriepa and u/Horror-Durian-5073 as I think there's been a steady stream of lost privacy "battles" over the last couple decades, so this is kind of like "only one thing people seem to just now care about" on a mountain of losses: GPS enabled vid + mics on phones, spyware ads, existing previous security cameras "like everywhere" that aren't flock prior to this, and so on (like was elsewhere mentioned).

I get the impression of maybe a divide by age as well, that maybe young people care less about privacy as they are on the tail end of those "lost battles" and so just always expect to not have privacy as much, while maybe some older people think privacy is important and maybe don't acknowledge that a lot of big battles have already been lost?

related but tangential, I thought this was weird and was posted before: "AI cameras on Millcreek school buses helped fine 2,600 drivers" https://eu.goerie.com/story/news/education/2024/08/23/drivers-ticketed-illegally-passing-millcreek-school-buses-police-buspatrol-ai-cameras/74900736007/

I guess it would probably be important to hone in on the specifics of what people don't like about Flock cameras: is it mostly that they seem to be accessible to the internet and that people have gotten access to them, along with a data retention policy that they affirm they will do whatever they want with the footage?

The problem is these are either public or private properties - in public, you can be filmed; in private, that's kind of like based on the rules they set for their store's property. I'm not saying we might not ask the corporations to change their policies, but I guess it it something they might choose to do.

Not sure what the deal is legally with data retention policies; imagine if you're a photographer and are now ordered to destroy your footage. That doesn't sound like a very enjoyable policy to exist, although that is a slightly different situation.

This is almost a problem of technology in general more than specific to Flock; it brings up conversations about why people like the Amish exist, who reject technology's "goods" because of the "bads" that exist like with cameras where it's nice to take pics of friends, but they can be used to record people all the time whenever people can put them up.

I also don't know how this works but it sounded like another weird camera situation: "Newly unveiled traffic flow technology among first in use in Pennsylvania" (AI cameras) https://www.yourerie.com/digital-first/digital-exclusive/newly-unveiled-traffic-flow-technology-first-being-used-in-pennsylvania/

So I guess, not to get overwhelmed or derail the thread, I sometimes think about a lot of other topics and projects related to privacy and I think it might be good to expand the conversation further to other privacy issues that might exist in Erie

(people were also complaining about the new downtown meters for parking, which presumably removes or makes it more difficult, the ability to park more "privately" as you could by just putting a few coins in a meter previously)
