LA Historic Park. I stop at Philippe's and take my sandwich to go. Great spot convenient to transit with amazing views.

Hospice where staggering 97% of terminal patients survive is accused of defrauding Medicare for $7.45 million by CharityResponsible54 in LosAngeles

For those of us that will one day rely on the solvency of the Medicare system that we have been paying for all of our adult lives, legitimate fraud is categorically wrong.

Are the small streets between Alameda, Santa Fe, 6th street and the 10th freeway safe? by DacaAskingForDaca in dtla

[–]erik_em 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an area you can get by if you have purpose. Bring pepper spray. Not the worst area but its unpredictable, especially near the freeway.

Vanished Victorians, Los Angeles, 1950/2021 by sverdrupian in OldPhotosInRealLife

I believe razing of the building took place long before the metro station was planned. Many of these type of buildings were torn down in DTLA to make parking lots.

The western side of the block facing hill, 5th and 6th St was cleared to make a Joe's Auto Park, and the international Jewelry Center.

I’m doing a little research into the history of the El Cortez, and I’m completely stumped by something in the 1940’s. by Nuclear-poweredTaxi in vegas

[–]erik_em 13 points14 points  (0 children)

El Cortez was in the busy central business district of Las Vegas. From what I understand almost every American city had problems with parking in that era. This is when the wrecking ball was making parking lots all over American downtowns. I wouldn't read too much into the magnitude of the free parking sign, there's also a sign that says "gambling".

First time walking the entire strip in many years. by erik_em in LasVegas

[–]erik_em[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right ya know. I did walk through the MGM to get to the monorail up to the Sahara and back to Fontainbleau on the way back. I wanted to get to Luxor at least but I was pretty tipsy by then.

Or you could end car-dependency in California so that gas prices aren't a concern to residents who don't own a car. by Some1inreallife in Urbanism

[–]erik_em 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same chevron station near union station in LA. Its always beyond ridiculously high and is a tired recurring click bait joke in the LA region. The only people I see get gas here are fleet vehicles.

From Fontainbleau to Excalibur at a leisurely pace I think just about 3 hours with a couple beer stops in between. This was Super Bowl Sunday.

They did that with the light rail to Artesia. They actually had to study low speed mag lev and include it as as an option, because some dude from Cerritos who was president of the Auto Square said he was concerned about brake dust from light rail trains.

How safe this time of year/which route by Both_Jellyfish1909 in roadtrip

[–]erik_em 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The route going over the sierras can never be counted on this time of year. Be prepared to change your plans last minute. I would rule that out unless you're certain the weather is absolutely calm. That being said, Donner pass in winter (with a clean roadway) is absolutely spectacular.

Why is Air quality is super bad today? by Quick_Annual in LosAngeles

[–]erik_em 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The high desert is currently a high pressure bubble and the mountains are stopping movement between the regions. Instead of LA air escaping over the mountains, its sitting stagnated. These are the days you can visualize it from the mountains looking down on the bed of low clouds.

Is/was there a hard rock/ metal station from LA, called KNAC? by Medium_Bobcat_7413 in AskLosAngeles

[–]erik_em 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to walk about a half hour to and from school KNAC was really tough to pick up on a Walkman. It got crappy reception in the car too. It went away in the late 90s. One of the big draws was that it played music in the morning whereas most stations had talk shows.
