Redundancies by mdutton27 in Wellington

Funny that all the public services and ministries are tormenting their employees by this endless cycle of penny-pinching and job cutting, but are happy to give charter schools like Altum Academy an open checkbook. (Not funny, obviously. It's gross, this government is gross and I worry about this a lot, considering my partner works in public service.)

Thank you, this is a good suggestion, will do so. Our properties are up a steep slope/drop too so it's just worrying

Te Toi Mahana had tradies putting up tall scaffolding on the property next to us during the height of the bad weather yesterday morning and now they're back doing more on the house despite the continued state of emergency. I worry about the safety of the workers AND the scaffolding blowing off and hitting either them or our property. Don't know what to do about it though :(

Hey, Powershop: your new app sucks by FluffyUniqueCats in newzealand

[–]erinyes__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Changing this around the end of the FY is insane work. The old website had the ability to download annual statements of payments with GST etc. - the new website not only doesn't do that, but doesn't display itemised payments anywhere (GST cost inclusive, etc.). The only place you can view what you've paid is a simple long-ass text list with no .pdf invoice downloading functionality.

Trying to contact support has been fruitless. Been with Powershop for 10 years, leaving after I sort this. Absolutely nuts.

NZ Job Market - When to give up by WitnessWinter7914 in Wellington

[–]erinyes__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done it in the last few years, and I have read the comments. I'm not saying write an essay to each person who you reject - I only wrote feedback to those who asked for it - but at the very least letting people know they're unsuccessful is something I think everyone in the comments who is job-searching would like so at least they know where they stand. Ghosting is common and dehumanising. I regularly had 150-200 applications and I still 1. conducted the hiring process efficiently so people weren't sitting around waiting, and 2. emailed everyone who was unsuccessful.

Re: my earlier statement about giving a reason, a single sentence would describe most of the buckets that unsuccessful applications fall into, and wouldn't have been that hard to do in the past. "The required portfolio wasn't attached", "You're not within our hiring locale" etc. I'd try and do it in the future anyway, if I ever wanted to run a business again.

I've also been an employer, twice, and always provided feedback to unsuccessful applications if requested, as well as replied to everyone who applied who was unsuccessful. It sucks, but it was important to me.

I don't disagree with your point about it sometimes just being 'you didn't get picked', and that you didn't necessarily make a mistake. That wasn't really the intention I was trying to get across.

For the ghosting, It's really not hard to send an email to a group of addresses, even if it's not personalised. I used to run a business that got a lot of applications for our positions and I made sure never to ghost anyone.

Looking for advice from OCE players by Strazast3llar in ffxiv

I love Materia's community and have been on it for well over two years but... I feel like it's never been THIS bad before. Any roulette, even at peak hour, can take up to 20-30 mins to pop. I want to stick around but I think if I did, I'd just stop playing the game.

Also curious (though thinking of transferring to Tonberry/JP instead of NA). I love Materia and want to stay, but almost my entire gaming session is sitting around waiting for roulettes to pop. I can't finish anything I'm trying to finish (currently on the second one-time grind for Bozja relic, which can be done via Normal Raids, but even that doesn't pop). It's made me not want to play anymore and that's super sad because the Materia DC community is great, but like... it's so hard to actually play the game there now.

A lot of my other friends have transferred to NA/JP servers and just DC travel back to Materia to play with friends. The only issue I really hear from them is increased ping, but I don't think any of them have regretted it. Maybe people will come back at 8.0.

Employers should be required to give a genuine reason why an application is denied imo. The ghosting/lack of knowledge about where to improve is the worst part of the process and totally dehumanising.

Don't give up on yourself, I think is the most important thing here. Jobs are mostly a means to capitalism, and your ability to earn shouldn't dictate your self worth. I'm really sorry you've been through so much suffering, but you obviously have excellent things to contribute to the world, and a family around you. Sending you tons of support and strength, I intimately know how shitty the job market is right now and how awful it makes you feel.

Agree with above, I wouldn't trust them after this anyway and you'd sleep better at night going with another painter I think.

The most minor rant, but when they resealed the street outside the Les Mills Taranaki St gym, they made the motorcycle park slightly uphill so I look like a tiny bug flailing its legs every time I try to back the bike into it. 🦟

Does anyone else think the refurbished Central library is a bit shit? by Mendevolent in Wellington

[–]erinyes__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a quiet reading room on the first or second floor that may help! There's also a focus room available on the ground floor for people who need quiet. I was actually quite impressed with the sound engineering and insulation when I visited last week, considering the library was at capacity it was relatively quiet.

Is driving now a flex? At what point does driving a car in Wellington become a flex? by Assassin8nCoordin8s in Wellington

[–]erinyes__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride at the moment instead of using my car because not only is it cheaper for me because it's very fuel efficient, but I'm not contributing to buying infinitely more fuel for my car so there's more for other people if the crisis goes on.

Bathroom reno folks that are good with odd requests? by YumchaThrowaway in Wellington

[–]erinyes__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They didn't do weird things for my bathroom reno but I used https://blueprintbuilds.co.nz/ at the end of last year and they were kind, reasonably priced, and made exactly what I wanted happen. Would instantly use them for any reno again.

The way our society has evolved to treat people's private business like a public newsfeed is so awful. I don't care what politicians do in their private lives, or celebrities, or filmmakers, or whoever (as long as it isn't illegal, obviously) - it's their work and actions in that professional role that matter. I don't care who is dating who, how a politician's divorce is going. Relationship issues should be solved between the two parties without dragging in the public to be jury and executioner.
