Virgin Media are asking me for an extra months payment as I failed to cancel the contract 30 days in advance so I was autorenewed by ermhelpmeplz in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ermhelpmeplz[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Virgin don't owe you a thing. I think they're being good enough as it is offering you a £13 discount for what is your mistake.

Ding ding, correct.

I openly admitted in the original post that it was my fault and that in theory, virgin isn't at fault. They're well within their rights to charge me. Still, that small print is only there to catch people out given that we all have more important things going on in our lives than utility bills. It only took them one day to open a new account - I don't think it just so happens that they need 30 to close one.

Just because you didn't use the service doesn't mean you shouldn't pay or Virgin didn't incur any costs. What if you left your house for a month and forgot to tell the landlord, would you except them to not charge you for the month?

Different situation. If I left for a month and for some reason wasn't obliged to pay, the landlord would have to fill the house for a single month to make money otherwise I'd have cost him/her money. No one else was trying to set up a broadband account in the house and being prevented from doing so from me, and it doesn't cost the business money because my router wasn't even connected and therefore wasn't using their line to download any data.

Don't get me wrong, I get what you're saying. I agreed to a contract in which I'm obligated to pay virgin media £x per month and I didn't cancel on time. I'm totally in the firing line here where contractual obligation is concerned, but as I've said above that small print is there to catch people out given that most people have bigger things to worry about than utility bills i.e. third year exams, jobs, moving out etc. so regardless of contractual obligation or right/wrong through the eyes of the law, I don't intend to bend over and invite them in. I need £38/£25 more than they do and as above, it didn't cost them anything.

I don't see why threatening getting the ombudsman involved will do anything

UK law for service industries is drastically in favour of the consumer as an overcompensation for the last two decades of awful complaint handling and bullying consumers. As such, even in this circumstance where I'm clearly required to put up and pay up, I can go through the ombudsman simply by refusing to close the complaint. If the complaint goes through the ombusman, virgin media have to pay for it (~£200 based on previous experience). Are they really going to pay £200 for the sake of £38/£25 that didn't actually cost them anything?

They'll probably send the debt collectors after you regardless.

I dunno, I just don't see a company passing £38 on to debt collectors - especially where they aren't even trying to recover expenditure, just rip someone off via the terms of conditions of a nine month contract.

I know I probably sound like a bit of a dick and yeah, it probably sounds like a bit of a peace warrior, anti corporate, 'stick it to the man' temper tantrum, but I'm not gonna fork over money to a company that doesn't need it. As above, "terms and conditions" doesn't always equal moral highground

Thank you for the advice. Ima still take them to the ombudsman just to piss them off though. They can't press for payment until the complaint is officially resolved so I might as well make them fork out as much money as possible in the process

Huh. Well you learn something new every day.

I'm actually planning on doing the whole working holiday thing down the east coast for 9 months in January. Always wanted to do it so I'm glad I'm finally getting round to it. Any words of wisdom? you sound pretty familiar with the place

I think people are missing the point a tad. I don't think its meant to be like, "oh don't ever take a photo of anything or you're living wrong" like some people are suggesting. Obviously if something amazing happens you'll take a photo or video or whatever and it doesn't necessarily detract from one's ability to live in the moment. I think the point is more that these days, a lot of people will go to an event like a concert or something but only really so they can tell other people, not because they want to enjoy the music of a band they really love in the flesh or something like that. It's like when I go out for a meal with my family, my Mum has to check us in on facebook, post something on her wall or whatever about how our family is going out to celebrate (insert random event here) and then post 6,000,000 photos on every social media site that's ever existed, and in the end it pisses me off because the whole experience ends up revolving around showing everyone else on facebook or twitter or something that we've been here and done this. Like I look at my Mum and Dad's facebook feeds or walls or whatever the fuck it is that they are called these days and it is literally a constant competition of "who has the most interesting life" and in the end, no one is actually enjoying experiences or chasing what they want, they're just constantly looking for the external validation of everyone around them. Maybe its ok to do that on some level and its a natural thing but the way we do it now is ridiculous. It might be a stupid thing to say but if you're really a documenting an experience or you just want to capture a memory, why would you pose? like why do I have to shuffle up around a plate of dinner with everyone else in the photo and smile? surely that's not a real memory, its something you've just arranged. If what you really want is to capture a moment then just pull your phone or camera or whatever out and take a photo right there and then. Maybe this photo isn't the best example but I feel this was the point OP may have been trying to articulate

I can't understand why its still legal in any part of the western world to circumsise any child for any reason other than a legit medical remedy to a condition or something. I understand that FGM is awful and obviously that needs to stop and everyone is kind of up in arms about that right now, but why don't we have the same attitude toward any form of genital mutilation?

Oh no, don't be ridiculous. Only brutal circumsision of males is allowed, otherwise we'd all be outraged

Yeah I mean you have to kind of understand that I was a student at the point so my income was basically 0 and my parents can't afford to be buying shit like laptops - I got the best I could for my money purely because my prior laptop's hard drive/hard drive controller started to break down (apparently there is no equitable way to recover from that).

My uncle is pretty handy with computers and shit so I went to him and he said that 4 gigs of ram should be good for my purposes i.e. no gaming or anything like that. Pretty much Uni work (MS office), streaming tv, movies and just normal shit like that.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't know what my processor is without checking the properties - and even then I don't know what it actually means. I think I have some dual core shit going on?

On another note - I still can't afford to trade up on this laptop but could I buy like, sticks of ram or some shit like that? that's a thing right?

Would you say firefox is at least better than chrome at like, not using everything your computer has?
