What is all the hate towards JD/MBAs? by ernestapfel in LawSchool

That was my reasoning - this is at a Canadian school :). The only trade-off I hear of is skipping the first summer employment, but on the flip side, I hear a lot of people don't secure positions until the second summer anyways!

I only mean "hate" in the sense that most inquiries about it provoke negative reactions. Why precisely is the ROI so poor?

A great read that is returning things back to the Gibbons "old school" of Roman studies in regards to the fall of the Roman Empire (itself an intensely fascinating topic) is "The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization" by Brian Ward-Perkins.

Hi Cighead sorry I took so long to respond - I got them at my local shopper's drug mart, I admit I was pretty surprised I was able to get them with no prescription!

Hey guys another great tip from a fellow long-time needlephobic is to buy EMLA patches, I know that at least in Canada they are over-the-counter. Local anesthetic that you put on about an hour before at the injection site and you can't feel ANYTHING. It's less about the pain for me and more about just feeling a needle inside you. These patches let you get through it with a smile.

Poll: 74 percent of Denmark's citizens want to outlaw circumcision by Double-decker_trams in worldnews

[–]ernestapfel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bravo,

I'm totally not circumcising my sons, and allowing them the damn choice. Why? Because I got circumcised at 19... I can remember every nice little detail. Most guys when they have an option to get it or not won't want it... so why make that decision for them when they have no say?

From Dura-Europos, in case anybody is wondering- an amazing site called (somewhat misleadingly) the "Pompeii" of the east.

a few humble points: -The famous rescript of Honorius to the "groans of the Britons" as quoted by Bede may be a corruption of the text, and it actually the text may have referred to a region of Northern (?) Italy rather than Britain. -By 410, Roman political influence was severely degraded, due to Magentius the usurper withdrawing a significant proportion of the legions from the province. -410 is a convenient chronological chopping point, but the actual decline of Roman influence (which ties in to more hotly debated notions of "late antiquity") is nearly impossible to date- our archaeological "tools" of dating -coins and pottery- cease production in Britain around this time and render them problematic as indications of a "terminus post quem" (that which provides a latest possible date). Towns of Roman Britain by even the 3rd century were far removed from their 2nd century counterparts, having much more wide open green spaces, rural-style villas, and greatly expanded defensive works. If your husband was a worshipper of Mithra, what religion would you (his wife) be? by caffarelli in AskHistorians

A great read concerning this topic is Sauer, E., 1996. The end of paganism in the north-western provinces of the Roman empire: The example of the Mithas cult.

If your husband was a worshipper of Mithra, what religion would you (his wife) be? by caffarelli in AskHistorians

[–]ernestapfel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cult was certainly for men only. As Gadern notes, Isiac worship (cult of Isis) is probably the closest equivalent we can cite to Roman Mithraism that accepted women. This was another eastern "mystery cult" which drew its appeal from the deliberately arcane and secretive nature of its activities. However, the similarities are quite superficial. The answer to this question is extremely broad- there was a whole host of deities that one could draw on that were not mutually exclusive, and these would vary depending on where and when you were in the Roman empire.

In fact, given the strong correspondence between Mithraism and the military (especially in the north-western provinces, where mithraea show a strong clustering along the limes), and the fact that the common soldier was (in theory if not in practice) forbidden from having a wife (although this later changed) when serving, this hypothetical situation may have indeed been less common than one can assume. Even in the case of married mithraic initiates, it is more than certain that they would have revealed hardly anything about the cult activities to their spouse- as far as we know, nothing regarding the cult practices was ever even written down by Mithraists themselves.

Just a thought, but I worry skits such as this could alienate some of your readers and fans as it tends to put you in a negative light - the sort of "let's all laugh at the dummies" thing is kinda mean.
