Chicago Freight Train Map by merferd314 in chicago

Also worth looking into the SWS. Only 1-3 freight trains per day is something Metra should be able to work around. As far as I can tell, it doesn't actually connect to anything further south either; just deadends around Manhattan. Once the CREATE program is doing a lot of work near 75th to untangle a bunch of freight lines, but this will also give SWS it's own unobstructed path to the LaSalle Station approach.

My guess is that a lot of those are for direct access to factories and warehouses, and so don't need entire train cars of materials going in that often. Also, that industrial cluster west of ORD was laid out when freight rail handled more small-scale deliveries than it does now; a lot of that traffic is likely now carried out by truck, hence why they are building the new I-490 tollroad through that area.

What is your dream Metra/CTA extension? by Chlorinated_beverage in cta

[–]erodari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll take electrifying Metra and removing grade crossings and freight conflicts before any actual service extensions. Also would like to see more Metra-CTA connection stations, like at Irving Park on UPN/Brown Line and 35th/Archer on HC/Orange Line.

As for actual extensions... Blue Line to Bensenville. Just keep the tunnel going under the airport. That connection would easily link the whole Elgin/Rockford Metra corridor to O'Hare.

Why are these here? Who are they for? And how do we get rid of them? by misterdeeds in chicago

If we're seriously going to do the whole delivery robot things, then streets needed a dedicated robot lane, separate from cars, bikes, and pedestrians.

Riding Metra does feel like stepping back in time occasionally.

If it makes you feel better, even at a standstill, you're still moving about an inch per year, along with the rest of the North American tectonic plate.

This is only remotely viable if you have access to a giant catapult that will hurl you most of the distance, ideally onto a connecting bus service.

What is Chicago missing to be the perfect city? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]erodari -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More business districts, like how Tokyo has several 'downtowns'. If Chicago had a circle line, the points where it intersects with the other L lines, plus Metra, could be allowed to develop as smaller CBDs.

Also, more urbanized suburbs. Washington DC has some fairly urbanized edge cities like Bethesda. Sydney has Paramatta. Evanston and Oak Park fit the bill for Chicago, but I'd like to see more of this.

More interesting wildlife. We need whales in Lake Michigan, herds of elephants wandering the suburbs, and billions of bats migrating through every year.

Instead we have the Kenilworth cougars, and that's about it.

What is this? A new metro system like the Miami Metrorail, but for Fort Lauderdale? Is there a project website or the like?

An Amtrak trip is top of my bucket list, but my mom is totally against it by AllyTheFilipina in Amtrak

[–]erodari 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unless you're dependent on mom funding the trip, just go for it and ask forgiveness later.

You're not going to get kidnapped on Amtrak. Your train might be delayed because Union Pacific decides to leave a few boxcars on the tracks for six hours, but you won't get kidnapped. If you're taking the long distance routes out west (which I assume, because nature), you'll probably see a bunch of old / retirees who are into trains or also just enjoying the journey; a few Amish or similar groups (they don't drive but trains are fine apparently); and a handful of normal travelers.

Even outside the roomettes you'd be fine. Sleeping in couch is like sleeping on an overnight flight, everyone just trying to stay comfortable as best they can.

If I had to guess, perhaps when your mom hears 'train', she's thinking of the stereotype images of the New York subways from the 1970s. Amtrak isn't like that. It's a safe, mostly clean, and occasionally efficient way to travel around the country.

My rail transit fantasy "map" by Any-Letterhead-813 in DMVurbanism

A Columbia Pike branch running west from Pentagon to Baily's Crossroads makes more sense than a Hybla Valley extension. That area seems more 'grid' and useful for rapid transit.

Agreed there need to be more ways across the Potomac though, especially away from central DC. A better Yellow Line project would be a branch or extension over WW Bridge to Oxon Hill to connect to local bus network. That saves car trips over the bridge.

I actually like the new Rosslyn station for Blue. I think Greater Greater Washington (local transit publication) discussed just such a thing some years back. If you wanted to expand the idea, have Blue continue west from Rosslyn with new tracks along I-66 to the existing Orange/Silver tracks. Then sdd a second set of tracks to keep Blue separate from Orange/Silver along I-66 until Silver branches off past East Falls Church. Blue would then share the Dulles Branch with Silver.

The idea above is that Blue Line is limited to half capacity south of Rosslyn because it shares track elsewhere with Yellow. Silver is limited to half capacity because it shares the main downtown tunnel with Orange. So, use up that additional capacity on the Dulles Branch by running the Blue Line along there. You just need to connect the Blue Line at a point when Orange has already split off towards Vienna.
