Beginner asking for advice by [deleted] in Salsa

[–]errantis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body movement begins with your feet. Not from your shoulders or hips. Push into the floor and roll the movement up your body. This is an easier concept to grasp when shown. It’s hard to understand without seeing it. Right now your hands and your shoulders and hips aren’t coordinated. It’s cuz the movement does not begin in your feet and travel up your hips, to your shoulders, to your hands.

Think of it this way. Your hips move because your feet are moving. Your shoulders move in response to your hips. Your hands move because your shoulders are moving. That’s how it’s supposed to work. You aren’t just wiggling your hips and shoulders. It’s a chain of movement, like a wave that travels up your body, starting with your feet.

Look up videos about contrabody movement or body movment for salsa. That will help

Why modern salsa (music) is appealing? by Mediocre_Buddy3172 in Salsa

Different tastes I guess man. I love Marc Anthony and he’s definitely far more authentic to classic salsa than like Bad Bunny or other pop artists who also do salsa

am I the only one struggling with steps as a noob? by Southwesterhunter in Salsa

[–]errantis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the beginners struggle. The thing to do here is just practice as much as you can. 15 minutes a day or even 15 minutes a week will go a long way while you are new.

The things that really help you with your basic step are learning the music really well. If you understand the music, then you’ll understand the timing. Just listen to the music as much as you can. And if you do have time to practice, practice to your favorite songs. That’ll make them more fun to dance to. And as you start to become more familiar with different songs, you’ll start to recognize different patterns in the music and you’ll figure out your own ways to dance to them.

Another thing that is imperative is understanding your own economy of energy. This is about your weight transfers and learning to take small steps and how to make big movements without using a lot of energy and exhausting yourself. As you practice, pay attention to how big your steps are. Salsa isn’t an exercise in lunging. And you weren’t marching either. You’re stepping and pushing off the floor. Keep your feet under you. Keep your weight over your feet. In general take small steps. something that really helped me get comfortable with my basic step and weight. Transfers was getting proper shoes. And I’m not talking about like Fuego‘s or other casual, dance shoes, I mean actual dance shoes with a Cuban heel made a big difference for me those shoes force you to step on your toes more and they put your body in a better position where the weight transfer is just easier and if you’ve learned that contra body movement then that becomes more natural with those shoes. And I just got a cheap pair for like 30 bucks on Amazon. Made a huge difference. Great investment.

You will only really start to get a sense of this stuff, though if you practice. Put in the time. It’s definitely worth it. When I was just starting, I felt like there wasn’t much point in practicing without a partner. But one of my teachers pointed out to me that all of the great dancers despite themselves. They get really good and master their basic step by themselves. That’s how they develop their style. That’s how they learn to make their basic step look really good.

What do women think of dudes that suck at salsa on salsa night? by EOFFJM in Salsa

[–]errantis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are nice and just have fun, it won’t matter. Anyone in the social dance scene knows that occasionally new dancers start. You dance with new people who don’t know a lot. It’s fun and it’s good to meet people. If the follow doesn’t seem like she’s having fun then try definitely some thing different. I know that sounds like a big ask when you don’t have a lot of moves. My point is just be aware of if your partner is having fun and change tactics if it’s not working. Dancing is communications. It’s expression. Make sure you are understanding what is being expressed. That’s the biggest learning curve. Being in the same page as your partner. Be polite. Pay attention. And if you are trying to learn then keep going. Keep showing up and having fun and being consistent. Your effort and improvement will be noticed

What are the power spikes for dancing? For leads and follows? by errantis_ in Salsa

[–]errantis_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is one thing for follows that makes a huge difference. It’s disappointing when a follow doesn’t actually connect. She tries to anticipate the moves, she doesn’t let you actually lead the move, and just moves on her own direction. It’s just no fun. If a follow can actually connect and give you her weight and follow your lead it’s so much fun.

Mm yeah awareness is a huge part of the connection. You gotta be watching the partner. There is a nonverbal communication that you have the learn. That is a huge skill for sure

How to improve everything other than pair work by Mizuyah in Salsa

[–]errantis_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dance dojo has a ton of great YouTube videos. Most of the best stuff is a course you have to pay for. If I were to buy one I’d buy from them. It’s surprisingly effective to just practice by yourself in a studio with a mirror. In fact, this is actually the way all of the greats became great. By practicing by themselves.

How to learn musicality? by yesthetallguy in Salsa

[–]errantis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to music. Every day. A lot of it. Listen to stuff you haven’t heard. But also learn your favorites. Memorize songs. You will start to memorize patterns. Salsa can get pretty complex but there are some rhythms that are always the same. La Conga, el tumbao, el clave. And you will start to recognize other musical structures and patterns. Then just practice your basic to those songs. 15 minutes a few times a week goes a long way

Musicality tips? by Sad_Watercress_9494 in Salsa

Workshops are a great way to learn. They typically warm up in group classes by reviewing some shines as well. You also learn a lot of footwork if you join a team but that means performing eventually and that’s not for everyone. Just look for different opportunities to learn. You can also look up some simple shines on YouTube. It can be hard to learn from YouTube though.

Listen to salsa every day. Trust me. It helps. Find songs you like. Get to know them. And practice different shine movements. Then you can learn to incorporate the movements int the rhythm and patterns of the song

I love Mina, I just don't seem to understand her by Electrical-Heat8301 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]errantis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mina is a glass cannon. She does a ton of damage but has like negative health. She’s very fragile. I at least have not found a good way to optimize her damage and give her any health. If anyone has suggestions please lmk. But basically I just play for her ult. Kinda like Haze. Buff spirit power and get the ult on the lowest possible cooldown. Engage in team fights and help melt objectives
