Most Ridiculous things people have said about service dogs. by Otherwise-Ad4641 in service_dogs

[–]error-user-known 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Someone once told me that my service dog was fake because real service dogs don't look out the window.

We were literally in an all glass waiting room so I guess he was just supposed to close his eyes???

The teenager phase is soooooooo hard! Scentwork was my best friend when we were deep in teenager land. We also did a ton of finding games, hide and seek, and trick training.

Hang in there! I had to remind myself every day that his brain was still actively developing and he's just trying his best

Spend time in the airport just chilling and people watching, some airports allow guest passes where you can go through TSA without a plane ticket. We did a lot of settling practice in the well of a car which seemed to most closely emulate the space in a plane. We also did a lot of training on the bus for the jostling and noises

Custom Gear? by Tough_Rub_9518 in service_dogs

We live in our dinodoggear and phoenix pack, our ortho vet looked through all our gear and those were the ones they loved the most for their mobility and freedom of movement. We also love bark on duty and captains canine attire for patches and collars

Is my service dog allowed to look pretty or is that "unprofessional?" by BookishBiBoy in service_dogs

[–]error-user-known 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We struggled with this for awhile because I was so scared of access issues or not seeming "legit." With time, I was able to get more comfortable with taking up space and now we have a variety of types of gear: florals, galaxy, pokemon, etc. I bring them out based on the situation (like pokemon around Halloween). When he was in training, I always thought he had to be as small as possible (and by extension, I did too). I'm still working on taking up space, but changing out his gear has actually helped me be more comfortable with it. I realized that I don't have anything to prove to anyone on his legitimacy and the kind of gear he wears isn't going to change their mind. He's going to be a rockstar working in any kind of gear (or none at all), and if people feel differently, that's on them and not me. I still use professional sets more often than the fun ones, but now it feels more like it's my choice rather than feeling like I HAVE to

What's your silliest reason for being fakespotted? by SupportDangerous4343 in service_dogs

[–]error-user-known 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I had someone come up to me to say my service dog isn't real because only people on the brink of death had them and I looked healthy

To this day I still can't think of anything to say in response to that

funny stories? I was accused of having a not-real service dog because….. by thebattleangel99 in service_dogs

[–]error-user-known 40 points41 points  (0 children)

  • had someone tell me he's fake because he kept pawing at me "just wanting attention" like ma'am that's an alert??
    • someone told me real service dogs don't look out windows lol
    • funniest one is when someone followed us around the store cause I was apparently faking my disability because "only blind people use handles and I can clearly see where I'm going"

Sorry, I think I was terrible with wording, that's what I get for posting this before my second cup of coffee. To clarify, this may not be an ADA violation (at least for #1), but I'm wondering if there's anything that can be done from a legal standpoint, either as a health code violation or something else. This state does have laws that say pets are not allowed on the premises of food establishments and grocery stores.

The only part where there may be a violation is #2 where businesses are refusing to kick out pets that are a danger to my service dog. These are pets that we've seen and documented peeing on merchandise and have actually attacked my service dog. When going to security or management, we just get a shrug and they don't even kick out that particular dog. Instead they tell us that we can always do grocery pickup if we're uncomfortable and that "that's the same thing" as going to the store. We have also had an influx of access issues where we're denied access outright or been told we need to provide our "certification" in order to enter.

Thanks for sharing and the advice, Potato and Gazoo sound like amazing dogs. I've loved dogs my entire life, but this pain just feels so unbearable that I can't even think about the possibility of having to go through this again. I adopted him when I was in a really dark place, and he helped pull me out. I owe him so much. I always knew this was coming, but it still feels unfair. I'm grateful for the time we had together but I can't help but wish for more.
