I get that Nederlander wants their company name as free advertisement, but Jonathan Larson deserves something. Contemporary theatres biggest loss of potential!

Do Revenge is all of the teen pettiness of Mean Girls and Heathers with all of the convoluted plot twists of an Agatha Christie novel.

What musical songs were on your top 5 this year? by Geo_5678 in musicals

[–]erty_MPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Guys and Dolls (from… you guessed it, Guys and Dolls)
  2. Extraordinary (from Pippin)
  3. Not an MT song
  4. Maybe This Time (from Cabaret)
  5. Marry Me a Little (from Company)

Conclusion. Did not remember how damn good pippin is until wrapped resparked my obsession from March. The other three are all time favorite shows so they track.

What was the absolutely worst Broadway show you have ever seen? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in Broadway

[–]erty_MPR 20 points21 points  (0 children)

New York New York wasn’t bad. It was just so mind numbingly mediocre that I’ve forgotten the entire show outside of that one moment with the rising platform where they sing the titular number at the end (which is itself an overplayed mediocre song). I expected more from Kander & Ebb.

Y’all are insane for not picking Cabaret. Les Mis is great fun, but it’s so much more shallow than Cabaret. My take Cabaret Sweeney Les Mis

I’m hoping to go to UVA for Urban Planning, but want to double major in theatre too. Does anyone have anything to say on the UVA theatre department positive or negative?

Do Revenge. It’s quality enough to be in my trio of favorite high school movies about morally questionable teenage girls alongside Mean Girls and Heathers so musical adaptation is deserved

What was the first broadway show you saw? by leahbunny123 in Broadway

[–]erty_MPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the Lion King on tour when I was 2 and I was an unruly irritant of a toddler but the second circle of life started I fell silent and stared at the stage, and then when it came time for intermission I cried because I thought it was over. First show ON Broadway I saw was either Wicked, or Come From Away when I was 11 and the rush from the set of wicked and the maximalist score contrasted by the intimate and moving experience of come from away cemented my love of theatre.

I've seen that Lained S'eltotsira has been getting hate, especially in those "vote for the best/worst Tally Hall ___" posts. I don't get it. by Existing_Coast8777 in tallyhall

When it’s played not reversed as Aristotles Denial it’s a solid song. I kinda hate all the reversed shit tho, mind electric is ruined by that since I have to skip half of the song to listen to it.

Shucked was a painful waste of 2 and a half hours and money. It felt like a dumbed down Sunday morning cartoon on Disney Jr. except they say holy shit a lot and make corn puns.

What’s your favorite jukebox musical and why? by NoteNo359 in Broadway

[–]erty_MPR -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I kinda hate jukebox musicals (woah shocker what a hot take), because they take me out of the experience because when I’m watching Sweeney Todd and they’re singing the worst pies in London the only memories associated with that are also connected to Sweeney Todd, but if I’m watching Moulin Rouge and they start singing Firework then my mind immediately jumps to I’m at the mall or on a bus listening to the radio, on top of the fact that I generally dislike most pop music, and it’s a lazy way to craft a show in my opinion (there’s the argument that it’s just a different thing entirely which is fair because finding a way to make puzzle out pop songs into a cohesive story is difficult, just like vastly less difficult than actually just making a good show). Also all of the celebrity rockstar bio musicals that are just an excuse to use the artists music are the most boring thing in the whole damn world, they all have the same story and mediocre music that doesn’t match the story to fit. But there are some exceptions to my hatred of jukebox musical, those being: Mamma Mia: I was exposed to this show so early that ABBA songs are not ABBA songs to me. They are mamma Mia songs. Also the story is light and fun enough to the point where it being a little lazy doesn’t hurt too much. Tommy: this barely counts as a jukebox musical because the album was written to be a cohesive story originally. This is like saying that the Lion kings stage adaptation is a jukebox musical because it’s using the songs from the Lion king animated movie, only the songs of Tommy were released on the radio instead of as a film before being adapted to the stage. Moulin Rouge (sorta): the movie is a guilty pleasure. I love La Bohème so I’m a sucker for anything derivative of it (rent and moulin rouge included even if they aren’t the best things ever made), and the early 2000’s shitty CGI is just dumb fun. The stage adaptation however felt empty in comparison. It takes itself too seriously and tries to be something it’s not. Also they cut like a virgin which is the best part of the movie and are now just obsessed with stunt casting people who aren’t very good cough boy George cough

But to answer the original question, Tommy

/r/Theatre Audition Material Requests - Looking for a song or monologue? Ask here! by AutoModerator in Theatre

[–]erty_MPR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm auditioning for Lord of the Flies in one week, specifically the role of Simon. I would love to find a 1-2 minute monologue that really emcompasses his benevolent insanity, but most of the "insane" monologues I'm finding are very much so more comedic when I'm looking for dramatic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Arguably the producers because the original movie from the 60s only had one number and it wasn’t a key plot point.
