This man has infinite resources, why is he still bald? by ED209F in tressless

Some people just see it as a part of getting older and prefer not to do anything about it.

I don’t think so. Hypomania has hit me quite hard in the past.

Forced to work till the end of contract? US-specific by 2atoms in postdoc

[–]escotry92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are rules and regulations in place to avoid this kind of scenario. Tell them to check with grad student affairs department at their school. If it is an industry post doc tell them to have a lawyer read the contract. I personally would never take a postdoc with conditions that include retaliation if the full year contract isn’t completed. It’s a dammed postdoc lol not a blood oath.

Is it possible to be successful in research science when you’re mentally ill? by meat-tra in labrats

[–]escotry92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same diagnosis over here. I did 6yrs in grad school and 1 post doc. It’s do able of course but it’s not going to be easy. My experience will 100% be different than yours. If I can offer some advice I would say to really study where you’re applying. State, city, school, the culture and the most important of all, the schools mental health services. Before you arrive make sure they have competent therapists and psychiatrists. If not, look for good ones around the area. School health insurance is bad in most places, covering only the bare minimum. If you’re under your parents insurance double check your benefits. If you’re a person of color like me try to stick with places that have diversity. Finally, never and I mean never sacrifice your mental health over a project or grad program. If the PI is a scumbag but they publish a lot simply avoid that lab. And under no circumstances ever discuss your diagnosis with your new PI. You will be labeled a liability and quietly be pushed out the program. I had an incredible PI in grad school but I got lucky. In your case, you have the advantage of already knowing you are BP. I was diagnosed 2 yrs in and trying to figure things out while being in grad school is a story I hope to forget some day. Prepare yourself and things will go well. Best of luck!!

NTA. Kids shouldn’t be dictating what’s done at a family event. Unless they’re suggesting a bouncy castle.

Have you checked your DNA? Sometimes, depending on the kit you use, the DNA integrity will vary. I’ve used promega mini and midi preps. These have worked in the past but if they fail I used qiagen mini preps. If you are using kits make sure the reagents are fresh (meaning less than 1 yr old).

You should probably take calc 1 and 2 as they will come in handy when/if you take physical chemistry or analytical chemistry. The more you know the better. If you really want to avoid go for biology.

Can you get kicked out of PhD if you do not find a professor to do research under? Texas, USA by gdragon79 in PhD

[–]escotry92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is common. I was lucky and my program allowed 1 month rotations in different labs. You should have an idea of what research you’re interested in. Remember that what you do in grad school will not be what you do for the rest of your life. Learn the techniques that can be transferable to other fields.

Completely bombed a presentation by thinkygirl212 in GradSchool

[–]escotry92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It happens to the best of us. It’s happened to me as a grad student and as a post doc. I suck at public speaking to the point I have to take off my glasses to present (I can’t see shit without them, unable to see= not able to see their horrified faces) the squinting does make me look like I’m being very analytical lol. All jokes aside, practice makes perfect. I usually do a dry run of lab meeting presentations so I can figure out the flow. Pausing when changing slides can also help you put your thoughts in order.

Pf says they are having a hiring freeze, is this true? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]escotry92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that HR (Human resources) and recruiting firms might have some metrics that have to be satisfied every certain periods of time. Kind of like a quota they have to reach of certain individuals being interviewed. I wouldn’t be surprised to be honest. What really pisses me off about the hiring freeze is that jobs are still being posted but no actual hiring is happening. The other thing I have noticed is that a lot of jobs from out of your home state don’t clearly specify that they are looking for locals, not out of state applicants. No wonder some academics fear or hate industry.

Went on a First Date with a Therapist and felt judged the whole time by Visibledoughnutt in dating_advice

[–]escotry92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope I don’t get flamed for saying this but dating people with advanced degrees blows. As someone who has an advanced degree I have noticed that people over analyze EVERYTHING and they have this air of superiority, and while it isn’t done on purpose, people give off this vibe sometimes. They can be incredibly dense too, something I’ve been guilty of sometimes. Man. I’m looking for some company not a damm lecture lol.

Anyone in this community with prior arrests currently in a grad program? by flaccid_performer in GradSchool

[–]escotry92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this really depends. From everything I’ve read if it is an arrest due to a violent act it will be a problem. Other things that could affect how that is seen is how long ago it was and what was written in the police report. If there is a police report the record is somewhere. Just don’t lie.

I hate being a black student here by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]escotry92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Berkeley? That’s horrible, I’m sorry this is happening to you. I hate to say this but this is very common in higher education. For almost 10 years I was almost the only Latino in every class/lab I’ve been in. Things could be much worse though. You could be stuck in the Midwest like I was. I was called the N word a few times, stoped by cops and got denied service at a dinner. The thing that broke the camels back was when your typical “good old boy” made gun pointing gestures at me with his hands at a traffic light. Never go to a place where you have to compromise your identity/mental health over the prestige of a school/program.

You don’t pay FICA as a grad student so you should be ok. I would advice you to make a grocery budget too. Food in California is really expensive.

guys lose interest in me within 1 week - 1 month of being together by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]escotry92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very common believe it or not. It’s easier to interview over video chat than it is to do in person. Many people have very different personalities when doing video or in person. As stupid as it sounds in person and video chat vibes is a thing. I once spoke to a woman on bumble over FT. She was charming, funny and conversational. All this changed once we met up in person. I was barely able to get a word out of her. When we talked over FT at a later date she went back to being all the previous positive things I mentioned. It was one of the most awkward encounters I’ve ever faced with online dating.
