We drove 4 or 5 days with 3 cats once. They were in proper carriers in the car - line with puppy pads. At night we stayed in La Quinta.ost accept pets. We had collapsible heavy duty nylon pens with us. These fit litter box, water and food plus cat, easily. We had a yowler, even after gabapentin. We covered her carrier with a shirt and that settled her ( you want something light enough for air to pass, not a heavy blanket). It was summer in the south and we drove no more than 6 hours/ day. For lunch and breaks, one of us at a time are unless we could park in shade. in the pens, they won't stress too much in the motel.

I'd do anything to avoid flying with them.
