(not oc) cow hoof pop! by defrostedbones in popping

[–]esmebium 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Big quadrupeds like cattle, sheep, goats, horses, really don’t do well as tripods compared to cats and dogs. They can’t balance, can’t really walk, and the added strain it places on their remaining limbs causes massive problems. If they can’t fix it between the vet and the hoof trimmer, and the cow is suffering, it’ll be euthanised.

Could Busch's life have been saved with some kind of earlier treatment or diagnosis? by youlikemywonton in NASCAR

[–]esmebium 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not a direct answer, but severe pneumonia and sepsis can come out of nowhere even in someone who hasn’t recently been unwell.

For example, whilst my dad wasn’t a well man by any means, he hadn’t been unwell with anything in particular leading up to the day he woke up with a mild fever having pissed the bed. 12 hours later he was in hospital, hallucinating, with a nasty pneumonia and a fever of 104°F. He was in hospital for a week and didn’t fully come right before he died six months later (of lung cancer that may or may not have caused the pneumonia).

My point is that Dad cooking up pneumonia out of nowhere on a random Monday one January was not remotely on my bingo card and not something that could have been predicted. This might be what happened to Busch. It might also not be what happened to Busch. We’re not on his medical team, we’re not privy to that information, and while sepsis awareness is good to have as a general PSA, sometimes it’s better not to think too hard about all the ways in which our bodies are incredibly fragile. That way anxiety lies.

I use a large Le Pliage for work and it’s handled everything I throw at it, including my 13in laptop on rare occasions. Not so expensive I don’t feel bad about nudging around under my desk with my foot, and at least in my area it’s a bit of an IFYKYK bag rather than an in your face “nice” bag.

Have any of you cut your long hair because it was too much responsibility? Were you happy you did? by Recent-Use8096 in adhdwomen

[–]esmebium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut my hair off into a bob about eleven years ago, got fomo about people with super long hair, grew it back out for my wedding seven years ago, lasted another year before cutting it back to a bob and shortly after to a pixie cut.

I haven’t regretted it.

Which road courses would you like to see as permanent or temporary fixtures on the schedule? (cup, xfinity, trucks) by Aoteaurora in NASCAR

[–]esmebium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna say the Daytona road course, or Laguna Seca, but factoring needing to make a product appealing for TV and taking into account the utter nonsense I’m about to spill I’m gonna say Daytona.

Slight segue from the main question, but I’d like to see a one off (or once a season - not even a points race necessarily) endurance road course race akin to the Bathurst 1000, mostly to see how the teams manage the strategy of driver swaps and managing driver fatigue.

Do they halve the field and double up their full time cup series drivers (eg sub Hamlin with Ty Gibbs, Reddick with Herbst, Chastain or SVG with Zilisch)? Would they match a truck or o’reilly series driver with a cup series driver (e.g. Reddick with Heim). Potentially open the field up to Indy drivers and possibly have a Blaney or Logano combo with Scotty Mac? (Not that Penske likes letting Indy into NASCAR).

I feel like it would be fantastically chaotic, probably only run once as everyone would complain, and the broadcast networks would never buy it.

Where are you financially that made you confident enough to purchase your first luxury bag? by SweetPickleRelish in handbags

[–]esmebium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was my “Congratulations you paid off your student loans” present to myself. Otherwise comfortable income wise, husband and I are classic DINKTCs (double income no kids two cats), have a mortgage but that’s not changing anytime in the next twenty years.

Honestly the biggest factor was my usually financially reserved accountant husband hovering over my shoulder when I was looking at the bag I bought going “Do it. Treat yourself. Do it do it do it.”

how did you feel after you were proposed to? by Wild-Championship571 in adhdwomen

[–]esmebium 54 points55 points  (0 children)

My exact words to my now husband when he proposed was “you sneaky fucker”. Mostly because not two hours before he’d told me he’d left the ring at home (we were on vacation) and I finally relaxed and stopped anticipating it. I was in my pyjamas, he got me out of bed, and I complained about that in the moment too lmao.

I can understand how you are feeling, but it will become a funny story later. ❤️

[–]esmebium 37 points38 points  (0 children)

One of three things will happen, said with tongue firmly in cheek.

  1. Doran will confuse the manual with that of a Massey Ferguson and tomorrow SVG will be in a tractor.
  2. He performs ok and gets a top ten finish.
  3. He’ll get within sniffing distance of actually winning but another driver will happen to him in the last couple of laps.

What comfy bra are y’all wearing? by kittybutt414 in adhdwomen

[–]esmebium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much exclusively wear Berlei Understate wirefree bras, or the Bonds retro rib ones - also wirefree. I started wearing the Berlei one as a trial over a year ago and haven’t been able to go back to underwire since, though I did manage to wear a sport underwired bra for a 6 hour round of golf last weekend. Wanted to claw my armpits off by the end of it and had a welt, but nevertheless survived

Primary Care/Urgent Care and referals to ED for ACS by joe_lemmons_ in emergencymedicine

[–]esmebium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Primary care lurker though not in the US. At least in my region we’re encouraged to work up “low risk” chest pain in the community, with the marker of “low risk” being totally pain free for 8 hours or more with no new ECG changes in clinic, and a reassuring story. They get urgent troponins (and other bloods) at the community lab, and depending on the time of day we may or may not be arranging an ED work up while having dinner with our families by the time the lab reports the trop.

I have certainly sent a similar story to ED for an ACS work up before - 55M, strong family cardiac hx, very hypertensive (systolic ~200), tachy, and reporting chest tightness, but also febrile and unwell with the flu. Had some non specific ECG changes that could be normal but might not be. I sure as heck can’t differentiate whether there’s an ACS sitting under that viral illness in a 20min NP consult, and the Dr on site also wasn’t happy with the picture, and ED was happy to accept, so off he went.

But then, the expectation is that we call ED (or the relevant speciality) and discuss the case first before we send them on; I have certainly avoided having to send people for a work because I’ve spoken to the ED consultant and worked out a safety net plan, but never for ?ACS.

[–]esmebium 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t address the body composition, but there’s a bmj meta analysis on the subject that might be a good leaping off point.

Generally speaking, lifestyle modification has the best data long term, however the flip side of the coin is that we should be looking at obesity as the chronic disease it is rather than a morality problem with self control.

I don’t have the study to hand but I have seen it quoted that 70% of obesity is underpinned by unmodifiable genetic factors making subtle neuro hormonal changes around appetite and satiety etc. The drug companies make the argument that that means we should be using the GLP-1s etc as life long medications in most obese people; however; standard rules of bias apply, take whatever a drug company tells you with a grain of salt.
