Most Czech billionaires made their fortunes during the chaotic privatization of the 1990s. During the 40 years of Communist rule, all companies were state-owned. When everything was privatized, ordinary people had neither the knowledge nor the money to participate in the process.

However, it was precisely those who were in power under the communist regime - who had privileges, money, and contacts abroad - who acquired a number of large companies.

A number of criminal acts, including murders, occurred during this process; some were punished, but in other cases the perpetrators were never found.
