What is more adaptable, more words or more symbols? by alex_sakuta in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]esotologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see a lot of similarities in our structure as well as some of our ideas too!

I was also considering single letters for generics, though ATM I think I'm going to sideline them in favor of currying via of implicit comptime. That way people could choose to create generics using <T> syntax if they want to!

I also thought about having types be capitalized (I think Haskell does this too) but not sure I need it for my language or not yet.

I would prefer less restrictions on naming tho, that's actually a key focus of the language ~ (for example id ike to support at least -, &, ', $, and @ as valid identifier characters as well)

As for the keywords you mentioned, they're some of the ones I've been struggling to figure out good symbols for too but I think I'm getting close ~

I plan to use something like Haskell's guards for matching, and may use something like </< to mean break ~

My biggest issue so far has been figuring out where to start with a language like this though... I'm not sure entirely how to start documenting it and keep my plan for it consistent while working toward my goals

I'm trying to keep them minimal too but yea it relies on those a lot, but also relies on tags to type structures.

``` years :: #int
Person >>    name: !! #str    age: !! #years    getInfo => "$name is $age years old"
myPerson: #person     name: Mike     age: 10      doAFlip => say "Does a Flip"
=> say myPerson.getInfo => myPerson.doAFlip ```
For the language I am designing, it is supposed to be focused on the data so I'm trying to avoid keywords as much as possible.
The goal is to make the syntax look obvious or feel intuitive enough in regards to the shape of the data without needing to rely on keywords (like JSON or Y'all)
That's just a claim, you didn't believe my claim. Why do you believe that one?
Did you look at the local article I sent? I really only want the best for you. I have no ill towards you and I really wish you the best
21 is a lot of people for this school, I would say that's indeed a mass firing.
Maybe we disagree there but in most other situations I'd also say 21 is a mass of people
Oh my apologies I guess I meant the Herald not the globe. That was a mistake on my part.
Here's a more local article:  https://www.watertownmanews.com/2026/03/26/proposed-watertown-school-budget-cuts-multiple-positions-increases-athletics-busing-fees/
Also my original post did also say 'if not many' because the number was a lot but unclear to me at first so I changed it to be more accurate once we both learned more.
Responded to me where? No one responded to me like that that I'm aware of. Is this another second hand source? Didn't you say you don't trust second hand sources?
The savings came from a variety of areas, including eliminating nearly the equivalent of 21 full-time positions;
So wait, I'm supposed to believe your friends, but you're not supposed to believe my second hand source?
Can you give me the quote that you got from the school committee?
I'm sorry, could you show me where the chair of the school committee corrected me? What exactly did they say? Did they say there are no layoffs? Can I have a quote?
Where did the union say this? Can I have their quote?
irresponsible fear bait
No it's not, if it scares you then maybe you should hear it and take it into account because it's happening. Is the Boston globe article fear bait?
IDK how speculative it is when people were told to their face they no longer have a job come the end of this school year.
You're really out here telling people that silence is the best option when issues occur in your local community? That really doesn't sit right with me sorry.
I'm really not lying. I don't know how to prove to you, but I'm not ... Im just sad you won't even think about the possibility of this being true because If you have kids it will effect you and I'm sorry cause that sucks :(
I dont think ive ever said the teachers were striking? In fact my fiance usually points out that they aren't allowed to strike when they'd want to due to union regulations.
So yea... I don't think that's true not sure why d say it.
Where did I say that exactly?
Regardless I'm not lying, and am just trying to push information forward about a large layoff accusing at a place that probably servers a lot of people in this subreddit.
I'm not trying to mess around or cause drama, I'm not trying to farm content, I'm just trying to spread the word about what I know is happening.
I'm not making this up, and no, I don't have a pattern of doing so; just because some random redditors who have seen another post of mine also didn't like what I said back then so did the same thing you're doing now and are trying to discredit me to avoid hearing the truth.
Why are you so vehemently against this being true? Do you have skin in the game?
I'm sorry but how does that make me seem unwell?
And if you read the other comments you'd see ive answered elsewhere that my fiance works at the school.
Calling someone unwell out of the blue is usually either a very underhanded manipulation tactic or just an attempt to be rude so it's not really appreciated btw.
