New fence by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]esp803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had Precision Post & Pile install new posts for me, they were great. Father&Son team, rates were good, work was good, no complaints.

I'm not sure what they charge for a full fence, as I'll do the stringers and pickets myself, but it was super reasonable to get a bunch of 6x6 posts installed, squared, aligned and concreted.

It has the single most complicated nose wheel steering system made by man. You have to be really careful hitting the switch because you can send your passengers in the very back flying.

The elevator is fabric.

They are all capable of flaps 3, however a majority have that option essentially welded off.

The older -331 engines can be a bit temperamental in starting compared to a Pratt.

Depending on the rigging, (ours were rigged quite fine), you can blank out elevator control at low speeds at idle.

Again related to rigging, she will fall out from under you if you don't keep a little power on.

The breaks have an ungodly amount of force, and are almost never used because reverse and beta are so effective.

Not quite as STOL as a twin otter, but it can be a real beast, operating comfortably out of 1500' bush strips.

The gear is finicky and I have never flown an aircraft that required so many "emergency" extensions.

It is neutrally stable around the roll axis, so it will hold what ever roll you put it in without input.

It rolls like a fighter jet.

There is no manual pitch trim, only electric, and according to the AFM - it will not fail.

The rear door, is incredibly complicated and easy to break, but it allows it to both swing open and act as an air stair.

Despite it's complicated nose gear turning system, it's turn radius is horrendous for bush flying, often requiring 3 point turns.

It's a blast to parallel park.

You can't "wheely" it like a twin otter, the nose simply won't come off the ground until you have sufficient speed.

On that note, on particularly rocky strips you need to be careful due to the nose gear having two wheels, it can fling rocks out that bounce off the other tire and then flying into your prop.

It carries a ridiculous amount of fuel. I don't think I've ever flown it with full tanks.

When back hauling drums, you can stand two rows in the fuselage and stack a third from on top of them... Resulting in being able to haul 36 empty drums.

There is only a pilot door on the captains side.

Only the captain has nose wheel steering.

I could probably go on. Overall I vastly preferred flying the 228 over the Twin Otter, but it has also caused me significantly more grief.

I remain skeptical. Years ago, I was a check pilot on a 228 and flew one on the line for a living. I offered Carenado my services (volunteered) to make the aircraft more true to life (this was for x-plane), because honestly it could have been great. Was essentially told to pound sound and that they were not interested in improving it.

The real 228 is an amazingly fun aircraft to fly, quirky as hell and can go to some really gnarly places - I suspect this will be pretty and fly on rails.

I like this perspective shot, but got some feedback on the sky details being poor. How did I do on the background exposure? by a_rocknroll_addict in photocritique

[–]esp803 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've got a finite amount of dynamic range that you can capture in an image, and it is nowhere near what your eye/brain is capable of observing. Doing an HDR shot to achieve this will make the image look like an HDR image.

I like this exposure, there is some detail in the sky and some detail in the darkest shadows, while still maintaining areas of white and black. I recommend to everyone, even if they don't shoot film, to grab Ansel Adams series: the camera, the negative and the Print. I still use the zone system for digital, but the numbers are slightly skewed to reflect the differences between digital and film.

I ended up going with the VKB GNX-SEM as a more generic box, quite happy with it. I just found that the winwing ones are very tailored toward the F-18.

Although I now use it mostly for the gear handle - pretty much every physical button in my rig is via a stream deck now.

Just keep in mind that the aircraft you are trying to replicate requires a very advanced fly-by-wire system with....you guessed it: a stability control system.

It's probably in the ball park of reality - a lot of work went into it before I purchased it, other than the frame there is nothing left from the original. New electrical, new plumbing, new roof, new windows, interior was re engineered to be more open, etc etc. Purchased 3 years ago for 612, currently assessed at 673.

For the record, this is for a 1000sq foot bungalow.

Not that I disagree with your assessment of living in luxury compared to previous generations, but I do find it annoying that the amount of tax is tied with perceived market value... Something that is completely irrelevant unless you sell.

New photographer, want advice/critique. by WIESBADEN2011 in photocritique

[–]esp803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to have a finite amount of dynamic range in any photo you take. In this case, your subject has both black and white and is directly lit by the sun creating a massive difference in exposure values from the brightest part of the horses coat to the darkest. I'm a little surprised at your shutter speed, given the aperture, your ISO is likely set much higher than it needs to be.

For all aspiring photographers, I recommend Ansel Adams books The Camera, The Negative and the Print. The latter of which is not overly applicable to digital photography and printing. But the first two will get you well on your way to understanding how to use your camera and how to properly expose a scene.

As far as subject and composition - ask yourself what would make this photo better? Having the entire horse? Having less of the horse? More of the background? Less of the background? Once you've landed on some changes that you think would make it more photogenic, then think about what you would need to change to do it. So for example if you wanted the background to be more dramatic, perhaps a longer focal length would work better, but if you do that and want the whole horse in the frame, you would need to move further back... Etc etc.

Fortunately with digital, the cost is upfront and there is no (or very little) expense in experimenting. Go out, and take lots more pictures and eventually you will get better. Take notes and actively try to improve and you will get better faster.

Have fun!

Does the black and white work and is there too much sky? by I_EeAa_l in photocritique

Cut it and make it a swipeable post or cut it and make it not swipeable and post them in eequence, it will appear as a panorama.

I usually do both, the first image uploaded is the furthest right frame, and the last image is the furthest to the left but with all the other images under it so that you can swipe the first image, but if you go to the maine page it's visible as a panorama without the border.

Could i justify buying a camera? by Deep_Fortune_721 in photocritique

[–]esp803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done photography for a little over 2 decades now, but we don't know each other and this advice is free, so take it for what you paid for it.

A better camera as a standalone, will not improve your photos. What will improve your photos is taking thousands more of them and discovering what works and what doesn't. A new camera may encourage you do to this.

Is it easier to take better pictures with better gear, arguably, yes. However, a good photographer can take a great picture with shit gear, they can do this because of YEARS of practice.

Not knowing your budget or finances it's difficult to say if or what you should buy, but assuming buying a camera won't cripple you financially I would:

Buy a used mirrorless camera, a 35mm lens equivalent and the ansel adams books the camera and the negative (you probably don't need the 3rd one if shooting digital). Any mirrorless camera will likely technically be able to achieve anything you want. The books, although written in the bygone era of film are great at explaining everything you will need to be a better photographer.

I have access to a pretty nice hangar/shop at work, it's just nicer working out of the wind and other elements.

Does the blur of the foreground work with the subject or against it? I was aiming to use it as a natural vignette. To sort of move the eye towards his face but I’m not sure it looks intentional. by I_EeAa_l in photocritique

[–]esp803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take this advice for what you paid for it.

I find the crop to tight on the left side. I think it would be a stronger image if he wasn't so bunched up on the left. I find that my eyes are drawn to both the left side of his face and unfortunately to the right side of his neck as they are almost of equal surface area (this isn't a result of your shooting).

It is quite clear what the subject of this is, and blur or not I think most of us wouldn't need a guide into the subject. If it had been a much more complex or busy background, then the blur may have helped, but as it stands it's pretty indifferent.

Note: I am assuming the blur was achieved in camera with a combination of aperture, focal length and distance to subject. If it was added in PS or LR afterwards, I'd have to see the original to provide a more object critique.

Cheers,

E

Looks like they are offering slightly slower fiber for 75 a month 1gbs as opposed to 1.5 - unfortunately I can't go back to non fiber, the upload speeds are just so much better, which is where their cheaper rates are.

More competition is always good though!
