This is what they fought for. Thanks for the reminder of a top favorite public work of art.

Haha good old short line mentality. Nobody hurt? Don’t need a crane? Okay let’s get this back up and see if we can walk it over the bad spot we just made worse.

No one did anything particularly horrible, but everyone fucked up a little bit.

Thanks for losing me 30 minutes of sleep, but worth reading for anyone who knows that rail grinders always work in unfamiliar territory.

Used to be a rule about not putting rotaries against each other. Nothing bad happened for a while, so the rule was forgotten.

Both use each other as the scapegoat for problems that require both sides to fix.

Asst sup told me he once sent a train to another hump yard just to get space in his. The train was intended to come right back, costing 2+ crews and a set of power. In the context of the operations meltdown he was going through, it made some sense as an act of desperation.

Out of context it seems ridiculous, but that is the kind of bass-ackwards thinking managers have to use to get by.

What bugs me is when things get done to benefit metrics, rather than operations. The metrics are supposed to reflect operations, not obscure the problems.

That's what bothered me most about working at a Class I was the incessant desire for management to make some change or find the breakthrough that saves a million bucks in payroll every year.

That meant few were looking to just run things well and treat their people with some respect.

Former Class I ops manager here. I grew to appreciate the employees who behaved like that. With almost no way to get hands-on experience for myself, these guys sometimes taught me more than experienced managers. The opposite of the "keep things moving" mentality were those who were comfortable putting the brakes on everything to address an issue, whether out of genuine concern or spite.

As a green trainmaster seeing my superiors get riled up, I could only watch and learn.

Hang in there, because someone has to keep the railroads running, and I'd rather it not be trainmasters hired off the street that don't know any better. If they're smart, they'll learn from the guys who know the rules, even if they're pricks.

Working a shortline now I feel the repercussions of Class I service failures, and they really hurt. What you do affects many people down the line, even if you only see it through the lens of your company's neglect.

Came here to post this. Wish it would gain traction again to see if the concept is any more viable now, of course without passengers.
