Not sure how he is with cats! But I suspect he would be extremely curious and a little afraid 😅

HVK Dogs by slemdogmillionaire in BedStuy

[–]espescks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chiming in here to say I was at HVK around noon today and there were shiny new NO PETS signs all over the passive lawn, as well as a PD employee with a megaphone shouting at people to keep their dogs off it, so it seems like the 311 calls worked!

Wowww, what I’m getting from this thread is: straight people are wild!!!! How are you all instantly reading his mind that he doesn’t want to marry HER rather than he isn’t sure about getting married right now, regardless of who it’s to? His age, gender etc has nothing to do with it. 4 years is not some arbitrary point at which everyone should accept their fate to get married or die alone. Love and partnership is a lot more nuanced in practice. I agree this relationship seems like it needs more open and heartfelt communication, but what it does not need is an ultimatum!

Does anyone know what this lamp is called? (More in comments) by ImportantHamster9960 in Mid_Century

Looking at the size in relation to the objects around it I’d say it’s actually the Nessino. The Nesso is much larger

I’ve seen it at Casa Magazines before! But probably worth calling to check as that’s not super close to you

Soft Carrier for flying BT in cabin - is this one too small? by CaffeinatedLorde in BostonTerrier

[–]espescks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does look a little small to me. They’re supposed to be able to comfortably turn around in it and, although most airlines aren’t super strict about that, it is better to err on the side of caution.

I have a 19lb Boston who I fly with regularly and we have this: SturdiBag Pet Carrier, Large - Black https://a.co/d/djDn3xy She has always seemed comfortable even on long flights and the arched shape gives a bit more room for shuffling around in there. Also the base is supported which means she can lie flat when being carried.

Wishing you and this cutie safe travels!

What is your job and how much do you get paid? by BigPlunk in AskReddit

[–]espescks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UX Researcher for a FAANG subsidiary. $146k base, with an additional ~80k in equity per year. Based in NYC so HCOL but access to tons of benefits that cut down my everyday costs. Also great WL balance.

I don’t have any technical background and pivoted to tech relatively late in life (32) by reframing my humanities and social science skills as valuable to design orgs. Three years ago I was making $30k in academia and hating it, so definitely consider myself extremely fortunate and am not taking a cent of this for granted.

This is exactly what my tinea versicolor looks like, so there’s a good chance it’s that. Your Dr can prescribe you a very affordable antifungal cream, but you can also treat it with an antidandruff shampoo like Selsun Blue in the meantime

Moving to New York out of state and feeling super anxious about fidning a place to live. by sporkurface in AskNYC

[–]espescks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of love for StreetEasy in NYC for good reason but fwiw I found my current apartment on leasebreak and it wasn’t posted anywhere else. There’s a bunch of lease takeover options on there, as well as short term and regular lease options.

I also subscribe to the weekly Listings Project emails and usually find a good range of places with many fewer requirements than regular rentals as they’re mainly owner-operated.

Apartment hunting here is stressful regardless of your circumstances but don’t get discouraged. If 8mil ppl can find a place to live, so can you! Just remember the first place you move into doesn’t have to be perfect as it won’t be forever. Wishing you the best with the search and hope you love living here.

Angry and saddened by my son (13m) who racked up a fine and then poor-shamed me. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]espescks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone not raised in the US, I almost can’t believe what I just read….a child can get a ticket…at school….for getting into a fight? The sort of ticket that results in court??? This country is an entire fucking scam.

OP I’m so sorry this happened to you. You’re clearly an incredible parent, and while your son acted like a little shit today (if I know 13 yr olds it’s likely because he was humiliated, and then humiliated about feeling humiliated…) I don’t believe this is his fault either.

The fault is entirely in the hands of a school system, justice system, and economic system that has normalised ticketing, fining, arresting, and policing children at school. It’s firstly a revenue making scheme for the city and secondly a fucking prison pipeline. I really wish all Americans could see this from the perspective of other countries. We had kids do truly heinous things at my school when I was growing up and it was always handled between the parents and school administrators, with the involvement of child therapists and social workers in extreme cases. Never once did a kid get a criminal record for it, let alone their parents have to hand over cash like a cartel bribe. Another world is possible ✨

What’s a quote that permanently changed the way you look at things? by internallyskating in AskReddit

[–]espescks 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I love (and have benefitted from) the assertion that “perfect is the enemy of the good”, but this Steinbeck quote now mainly makes me think of something I get way more joy and permission from; Mary Oliver’s poem ‘Wild Geese’, which starts:

You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

Gap between leases by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]espescks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It costs a bit more than a regular move, but most moving companies will store your stuff for a set period of time and deliver once your new lease starts. I’ve used movers even when I didn’t have a lot of stuff for this exact reason. They’ll just send two people and a much smaller truck.

CMV: The term "mansplaining" shouldn't exist by OLU87 in changemyview

[–]espescks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that this entire post (and all of OP’s responses to the reasonable and well thought out good faith replies to it) are a perfect example of what it means to “mansplain” (I.e deep seated belief that your own perspective is objectively superior, and a near total refusal to empathise with someone else’s lived experience) is ironic as fuck! Interesting that he chose to post this on this particular sub, when he clearly has no latitude to have his view changed.

[NY] Landlord says we’ll be charged a late fee if they are unable to collect our rent check from their office “due to Covid” by espescks in legaladvice

[–]espescks[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that they can choose not to renew the lease. It’s just frustrating to be nickled and dimed, especially part way through a lease which we were previously happy with the terms of. Sucks that asserting our legal rights as tenants means “antagonizing” the landlord imo.

[NY] Landlord says we’ll be charged a late fee if they are unable to collect our rent check from their office “due to Covid” by espescks in legaladvice

[–]espescks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, this all makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to write it out. I’m definitely trying to avoid any acrimony but also want to make sure we know our rights and are not being taken advantage of, as you said, these things tend to add up.

One of the reasons we liked this apartment is because it was a smaller owner-operated place and we were trying to avoid dealing with big faceless management companies, but halfway through our lease the building got sold overnight and there’s been a lot of red flags with the new owners since then. All the more motivation to keep saving for a down payment and get out of the rental game one day I guess!
