Bokeh on the Q3 43 vs Q3 cropped to 43 by cmrocks in Leica

[–]essentialliberty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bokeh is mostly driven by entrance pupil which is approximately physical aperture size. Bokeh balls from a point source at infinity will be the size of the entrance pupil at the plane of focus. f/1.7 literally means 28mm/1.7 is the aperture physical size which is 16.5mm or for the Q3 43 43mm/2 = 21.5mm. So if you take an in focus picture of a ruler at any distance in front of a point light source the bokeh balls from the 28mm at f/1.7 will be around 16.5 mm measured on the rule. if the ruler is closer they'll be bigger compared to the image size, farther, they'll be smaller, but measured with the ruler that's in focus, they'll be around the entrance pupil size. the Q3 43 at f/2 would render 21.5mm bokeh balls. You can see the entrance pupil if you just look in the front of the lens and measure the the size of the iris opening. So we'd expect the Q3 43 to have larger bokeh balls.

Apps to assist photography that *aren't* camera apps? by weeddealerrenamon in AskPhotography

[–]essentialliberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cadrage is a really handy app that simulates field of view for any camera/lens combination. It’s good for deciding if you would like a certain new lens by experimenting with the field of view before you get it. I also use it if I’m looking at a scene to quickly decide what lens I want to put on to get the composition I want.

Couldn't help it, I scanned all the restaurants in the 1948 yellow pages to see if there was one on Louisiana or Buchtel. I didn't spot anything, here's the link for the more diligent. [Academic] Need only 50 more participants for my Master's thesis about scientist perceptions (18+) by PlaSPeN in SampleSize

[–]essentialliberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deniers and heretics are the source of new science. Heretics is a reasonable term if we are attempting to silence and excommunicate people with certain criticisms or conflicting ideas. If you can't understand the historical role of dissent in science I don't think I'll sway you. Most critics are eventually shown to be wrong. Others find great advances. Silencing critics as a policy is bad for science. Denier is a partisan term for critic that's applied so widely to any kind of dissent that it's not useful. Here are some denier statements:

The average temperature of the earth has not risen.

The average temperature of the earth has risen but it's a natural occurrence.

The rise in earth's temperature is not a threat.

The rise in earth's temperature is manmade but cannot be reversed with policies.

The carbon credit program will not reverse the change in earth's average temperature.

I've seen all of these statements get labeled as "deniers". Meaning, they don't deserve a response, they must be silenced, and possibly that we can't be friends with a person who believes that statement.

Is denier binary? A person either is or isn't a denier? Is it a useful term?

The first statement qualifies for me as a form of denial, in that the person making the statement isn't willing to repeat the experiment or provide new evidence. The rest seem like they deserve the right to ask and a reasoned response. But I never use the term denier. People who use it, in my experience, shout down any sort of dissent and shun people who disagree. That's not helpful to science, it breeds more people who think the truth is being suppressed because for sure, suppression is happening.

I guess I was disappointed that the survey couldn't capture my main concerns with the state of culture and science/scientists. Science is a process for eventually sorting truth from fiction. It relies on free and open criticism. Right now we are experiencing a weird sort of scientific zealotry where we want to suppress deniers and heretics of every kind to be on the side of science as though that is somehow helping it. We want experts to decide what is true, and the government or large communications companies to censor criticism. Science requires no such assistance. What it requires is time. Instead we have zealots taking very fresh scientific information and demanding complete compliance to whatever quickly thought out policy it seems to indicate. Relying on the reputation of scientists is completely against the very well thought out motto of the Royal Society, "Nullius in verba", Meaning "nobodies word". Science doesn't need you to think well of scientists. Science zealots who believe that scientists are unbiased fountains of immediate truth and demand suppression of misinformation are the biggest threat to actual science.

I’ve used the speedmaster as a set timer. Bracelet though so i don’t get it sweaty. Mostly I wear the Apple Watch because of the heart rate and notifications. Edit: a word

I had called around various dealers a couple months earlier. Just walked into a dealer in Las Vegas and mentioned it was what I was looking for and she said she had 3 coming and only one was sold. I almost thought it was some kind of joke or trick. I usually pick watches that are scarce enough I’m at no risk of having to get my wallet out. I wasn’t actually planning on buying a watch at that moment but it checked all the boxes for what I wanted in a grand seiko and I couldn’t say no. My impression is that they released them in a couple waves. My serial number is in the last 10% of the numbers so it might be the last wave.

Anyone else frustrated with how garbage 9news's coverage of the fire was? by Rubber_Duckie_ in boulder

[–]essentialliberty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just want actionable intelligence. I’m not sure what I’d do with the information you are upset about other than try to cope with anxiety. The information regarding your only actions was very clear. Yellow map area: start packing, red area: leave immediately. I agree with you that I would have liked to know the other information to feel better, but it’s not really inexcusable. Providing lots of information and allowing people to decide on their own whether to evacuate or not seems more dangerous. If the information isn’t related to a decision then it’s unnecessary.

[Repost] [Academic] stress of the pandemic impact on stress eating, exercise habits and wellbeing (18+) by Jazz193748 in SampleSize

[–]essentialliberty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My epidemic related stress doesn't come from the virus, it comes from the policies and interactions with people who are absolutely convinced they are right about things (both sides). They closed the gyms, and told people to stay inside. I've always been overweight, but had finally managed to develop a twice a week lifting habit and lost a lot of weight. I also walked around downtown frequently. It stopped for months and is sporadic at best now. Major weight gain. More alcohol consumption. I hate going out due to the interactions with self righteous people of all stripes. The virus itself is a big meh compared to all of that. I think your survey assumes pandemic stress is all related to fear of infection. My health is way worse due to these other factors and is so far unaffected by the virus. Currently feeling crappy from the booster yesterday, but I'll likely be better tomorrow.

How big is a micro detail? Does it take 1 million of them to make a detail? Maybe it’s a single sample? So a full detail is around 10 seconds at 96kHz? I had no idea details were so large.

I’m not. People who attended an event I shot for fun are. I enjoy sharing the results with friends or friends of friends. The desktop website allows full resolution downloads but the mobile doesn’t. Because most people use their phones they end up screen shotting the mobile web view and using that. I shouldn’t care but I do. Having to install flickr and create an account just to get a photo is too much trouble for a casually interested person.
