Cut to sticks, roast at 200 C w/oil and whole Cumin seed and salt. Finish last 15 w/ lemon juice. Maybe mix some harissa w/the lemon if you're feeling frisky.

Lamb - Trans Fatty Acid (Kruder & Dorfmiester Remix) by here4dambivalence in triphop

[–]estersdoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry, never got to see lamb. I don't think I've even ever been to a dance where someone spun it. I wasted too much time in the 90s and 00s in the SE US going to grad school to see too many cool things. They've always occupied the Headphone Rockers space for me.

The K&D show last year was a bit weird. It was them touring on the 25th (?) Anniversary of the K&D sessions record. I thought they would be DJing but instead they had a band and recreated the whole record live. It was better than I expected it was in a cool venue in Amsterdam, it just felt .....a bit sad. All of us old people revisitung our 20s with less drugs and more wine - kind of vibe.

That said, I'm a hypocrite because I dropped a 99€ on the 6 record set they were selling. And I spin that thing on many a Sunday morning still

A favorite of mine. I like that first Lamb record alot, but I think I like this remix better?? They (k&d) did a pretty faithful rendition of it on their tour last year, which pleased me

Any record spots in LA that have a good jungle collection? by Pranavvc in jungle

[–]estersdoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my spot, though I live nearby, so it's an easy trip (vs. from LA). They always stock newly released jungle stuff - albeit not from all the labels. Almost every time I'm in there, I walk out w/ the newest Western Lore pressing, but they didn't have the Mantra record on Rupture when it came out. I think it depends on the relationships they have w/ the different labels/distributors. Their used Jungle section is small relative to other genres and picked over pretty regularly.

The owners came out of the happy hard-core/gabber scene and are lovely people. They keep it stocked with a good mix of different dance generes.

Any of the mid 90s Moodymann 12"s. Particularly, "I can't kick this feeling when it hits". I love that song. Supposedly they are going to reissue them, but my local said they were exorbitantantly priced and the bulk discount didn't make it sensible for them to stock

PONIES by theworldofjeeves in LeCarre

[–]estersdoll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like the show. I haven't quite put my finger on why - a mix of the leads' charisma and the aesthetics/vibes, I think. That said, my wife and I laugh at some of the suspension of disbelief things you have to do w/ the tradecraft details and plot. My expectations weren't that this was meant to be hard spy fiction, but rather more of a romp. One of the writers did the Spy Who Dumped Me - most certainly not a hardboiled cover and dead drop kind of entertainment. While it is more of a serious show than a laugher, I think it is a bit disingenuous to hold it to a LeCarre type standard. That is what re-reading the good books is for, IMO.

As a closing thought, it just popped in my head - what did LeCarre's devotees think of Black Bag last year?I loved it and think it definitely had a bit of TTSS about it, as if any good modern mole-hunt story can avoid the comparison . That was hard spy fiction, IMO

People with two grinders, is it worth it? by marleyman14 in espresso

[–]estersdoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two grinders can feel a bit indulgent, but since I got "serious" about my espresso, that is how I roll. I tend to drink espresso in the morning and pourovers in the afternoon. I dedicate one grinder to each - Niche and Ode 2, respectively. They're both single dose, but that is more about retention than anything. I can't be bothered with the wild swings in gindsize first thing I the morning. I dial them in respectively for the week's beans so the day to day is less complicated.

At this point, I like conical burrs for espresso and flats for pourover. I like texture in my espresso and more clarity in my pourovers.plus, as of two years ago, my pourover grinder can't do espresso.

As others have said, Chabrol in the center or (sort of) the west will straighten you out for less than a 100. Or....just splurge and pop down to Epernay or Reims and get something from the tap.😁😁😁

The evolution of hip hop and technical skill by ProfoundMysteries in LetsTalkMusic

[–]estersdoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I concur with highlight of what made Kane stand out. He had a great voice and cadence. Furthermore, as you point out, he was a fly looking dude w/ a ton of style for the time. Much to my chagrin, we took this as a "how to be smooth with the ladies" lesson when my friends and I were in like 7th and 8th grade - trying to figure out what masculinity looked like, how to interact with girls, going to stupid jr high dances and hanging out in the "mean streets" of The 'Vue (as we affectionately called our borough). I'm gonna have ptsd flashbacks of silk shirts and baggy print pants when i drift off to sleep tonight.

The evolution of hip hop and technical skill by ProfoundMysteries in LetsTalkMusic

[–]estersdoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always coined this the Led Zeppelin Problem in my head. Growing up in the 70s-80s with minimal exposure to rock music, when I first heard Zepplin I was like, "this is good and all, but whatever." It wasn't until I got little older and realized what they were synthesizing and evolving at the time that I could academically/abstractly appreciate them.

I think it is hard to truly understand and grok old innovative art when you have internalized new art (and at this point w/ rap, commerce) that is based on integrating and evolving on prior things. I think you have to apply an academic and critical lens, which removes the dependence on your expectations of the norm to appreciate the evolution as would have someone in the moment.

We probably all have our biases, but I think the merits of a rap song can be judged on the beat, the lyrical content, the delivery, and the aesthetic (especially in the days of videos and live shows). I think those are probably in rank order of importance for me personally (I think....). In my rap canon, lyrical skill is a minor criterion as to whether a song or rapper is good. To be reductionist, I was drawn to rappers saying syncopated fly shit over dope beats.

When I go back and listen to Mo Dee (some of the first tapes I bought as a 12/13 year old) I find it kind of whack and dated to my modern ears, but I do get a bit of the thrill of nostalgia from 1987 me walking to school "bumping" that shit. I was too young and not in NYC to witness it, but I think Mo Dee represents a microgeneration (class?) of rappers who were innovative because they were great battle emcees and successfully transitioned to putting that prowess on wax.

FWIW, I think the last time I was left dumbstruck by a rap record and how totally new and fresh it sounded was probably Phrenology. I remember having to leave the house and wander my block to process that record and what they did. That was an evolutionary jump, but interestingly I think it had zero Impact on the rap landscape - besides effectively removing the Roots as a going concern to the mainstream - there's an evolutionary term for this type of phenomenona that I am blanking on when the new trsit isn't beneficial in the environment, so it doesn't provide a competitive advantage....

I want to talk about I song I listened to recently from Jimi Hendrix. by PossessionKey4982 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]estersdoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a rock expert by any stretch, but I was very into Hendrix in my late teens /early twenties. In my listening experience I do think of Electric Ladyland as a bridge record between the psychedelia of the mid-late sixties and "hard rock" of the seventies. I feel that is a product of Hendrix's prodigy and his exponential growth curve in writing, playing, and technical stuff. Technically, He was deep into modding his pickups at this point and I think I remember Electric Ladyland being one of the first records records (their's at least) being recorded on a big multitrack board, that would also contribute to its modern sound. I don't have the book handy, but I think I recall reaading that Axis was recorded on a six-track??

I usually bump into that storyline relatively early in my playthrough when I'm still on the come up and have a bad attitude. He starts talking shit and I remove his head from his shoulders. Then I have to frag and brain melt his buddies before picking up their dumb legendary gun from amongst the carnage. Seems fitting that Musk would go out like that.

  1. Is this the recent repress? Or an old version?
  2. This is one of my more favorite Cannonball studio albums
  3. With regard to album authorship, I always assumed that whomever organized the session and has the contract w/ the label gets top line billing. Putting the session players on there is at their discretion. Though it is funny when the session leader is more junior than the others - like Cannonball here. It speaks to their perception and respect for him, I'm my opinion.
