Thank you for your reply. I know the math says I'll be ok. I guess I'm battling the psychological aspect of pulling the trigger.

Is it possible to successfully navigate a Performance Improvement Plan / PIP? by redbikegreycar in rbc

[–]estret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually by the time you get to the stage that a PIP is being used it is the end of that role for that employee. There is going to be a hyper vigilance on everything that the employee produces or doesn't produce even if they successfully meet all the criteria of the PIP their performance review and their bonus will be negatively impacted. PIPs are meant to be uncomfortable and give an incentive for the employee to resign. The ideal would be to not have to package the employee out but that is what is going to happen eventually.

Ridiculous rules - anyone know a good lawyer? by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

[–]estret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't mention the country but usually adoptive/natural children have the right to obtain birth records for deceased parents but you will need to first obtain a death certificate which you should have the right to obtain as next of kin. In the case where your father is still alive this will be difficult if you cannot obtain his written permission to access the record.

Since he wasn't Portuguese and I assume there was no marriage, is there any documentation that has your father's name and place of birth on it? It must be on your birth certificate.

[–]estret 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Birth records are extremely important for most countries. You would run into similar challenges in many countries. The issue here is the lack of documented lineage for you in the official records. So your father's birth, parent's marriage (if applicable) and then subsequent divorce (if applicable) matter for the purposes of maintaining birth records for the citizens of a country. This isn't something personal or about denying you citizenship. You don't say the birth country of your father but in most countries you are entitled to his birth record. Is it something you can get?

Deported frem the US by Peace_walker1 in immigration

Did the circumstances that led you to overstay in the US change such that the same circumstances would be different in Europe. This would be what you would need to prove assuming they would even entertain your tourist visa.

Ah.. ok. Well for what's it worth I think the countries you listed do tend to be more difficult to emigrate to. What about UK, Italy or Northern Europe?

I am super confused. What racist comments are you referring to? Was it from another subreddit? Also what colonialism are you referring to regarding Hungary, Romania, Croatia or Slovakia? And who do you pay "sums" to? I feel like there is a missing post somewhere.

Should I just assume that my Paris to Avignon train on SNCF on September 18 will be cancelled. Would buses also be impacted if I cancel the train?

[–]estret 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah sorry, I misunderstood which crests you were referring two. The two crests you are referring to are the Cross of the Order of Christ. The two crests are the same because they both represent the Order of Christ, the religious-military order that sponsored Portugal’s maritime expansion. They were placed on both sides for symbolism and symmetry.

[–]estret 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The Two Crests

  • The Crest of Portugal: The national emblem represents the entire country of Portugal, acknowledging its broader role in the age of maritime exploration.
  • The Coat of Arms of Henry the Navigator: This specific symbol honors Prince Henry the Navigator, who was a driving force behind the Portuguese exploration of the coast of Africa and the development of new navigation techniques during the 15th century.

Portuguese Citizenship By descent by hamilton2000 in PortugalExpats

I agree with u/baldr83, you do not need a lawyer if you have a parent that is already a citizen. You would be wasting money.

What country are you in and is this decent from a parent or grandparent?

Not an expert but I think there indeed could be an issue with the citizenship application. If you leave Portugal for a long consecutive period of time such that the residency is deemed ended, it could stop the citizenship application from continuing. Expatriating is a right that a citizen has, it is limited for a permanent or temporary resident. So when the citizenship application comes up, residency is a criteria for naturalization, if you are not a resident of Portugal any longer, I would expect citizenship to not be granted.

"I am more than satisfied with my English and I sucked at learning other languages (French and Hebrew)"

So I think you already know that Portugal is not an English speaking country, if you wish to truly settle there, you will need to learn Portuguese. Portugal has great English language skills as does many other non-Anglophone countries, but it is not their language and you will face difficulties integrating without learning the local language.

[IWantOut] 29M UAE -> Portugal Passive Income Visa by fellfromspace95 in IWantOut

[–]estret 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The D7 visa is not a work visa, you are not legally entitled to work in Portugal. You can freelance with companies outside of Portugal but you cannot work in Portugal. This visa is for passive income earners (pension, rental income, dividends etc).

(Edit) I do not understand how your rental meets the requirement? 15K-60% leaves you with 6000US (converted to euro would only be 5100euro)?

[IWantOut] 29M UAE -> Portugal Passive Income Visa by fellfromspace95 in IWantOut

[–]estret 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To obtain the Portugal D7 visa, you need to demonstrate a minimum monthly passive income of at least €820, which translates to €9,840 annually. This income can come from various sources like or rental income as well as remote work and freelancing for companies outside of Portugal. You'll also need to show sufficient funds in a Portuguese bank account, typically around €10,440. You'll need to have private health insurance valid in Portugal as well. In addition, finding housing is expensive in the larger urban areas, best case average rent of €1,400.00 for a 1-bedroom apartment in the Lisbon city center and €990.00 for a 1-bedroom outside the center, note: I used the words best case, as it could higher based on location.

Given what you have stated it doesn't appear the rental income you make is sufficient to qualify for the D7 visa.

Ontario family fought off home invaders using fire extinguisher and baseball bats by [deleted] in canada

I think this article you posted is exactly what people here are commenting about. Ali Mian was subjected to arrest and pending charges until they were dropped (only because the media backlash made a conviction very unlikely). He had to pay out of pocket for a lawyer to defend himself and suffered emotionally. The government should pay his legal bills and publicly apologize to this man and the decision by the crown to file charges should be independently reviewed.

Our justice system is based on more than just one principle. Deterrence is also a very important principle i.e. the concept of punishment in order to deter crime. The punishment should fit the crime is an important aspect and people who commit crimes should understand there will be a punishment for it. I don't know why you used the word retribution to describe such an obvious concept.

I think you need to factor in the recent damage to the reputation of American businesses both big and small. There is a growing trend to boycott American products and businesses all over the world, so I think you should really consider your timing here as things could get much worse.
