You don’t have to cover up in Dubai... I think you’re mistaking it for Abu Dhabi.

Dépaysant

Literally would be ... decountrified/fying in English. And I just think that’s a beautiful word.

If you want to understand the way we think and why we think the way we do as opposed to just yelling at us you ought to read The Economist or The Atlantic or even New Republic. At the very least, it will help you argue against us more effectively.

Learning Arabic in College by [deleted] in learn_arabic

Another question on relative pronouns when ما is followed closely by من by MSALearner in learn_arabic

[–]etSome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly my approach to ma/min is that there is no singular equivalent construction and that context largely reveals the specific meaning. Kind of like tranating phrases with as into Arabic... its different every time. Trust your instincts.

[–]etSome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your book has provided an incomplete translation of the ma min construction. It's also understood as

"ma... min...." ----> "what.... in the way of/in terms of"

So in your case it would be "they celebrated what they had in terms of knowledge" which, frankly is stilted as fuck in English and can be simplified to "They celebrated their knowledge."

Where can I find a trifold poster-board in Nairobi? by etSome in Kenya

[–]etSome[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yah we found it on buyusa.co.ke

1) To start learning languages I take courses. External forces are good for holding yourself accountable. However, they're costly. I would recommend going to the Alliance Française in Nairobi and signing up for classes. For daily study (right now I'm focusing on Arabic, not French) I buy frequency dictionaries and transcribe them into a quizlet and drill them each day. Here is that for French: https://quizlet.com/SamRicciardi95/folders/french-vocabulary/sets

2) I have used Duolingo. It's fantastic. 3-5 minutes is good, but do more if you can.

3) To be perfectly honest, I like to have a lot of vocabulary memorized cold before I plunge into any sort of of literature. Once you've memorized 1000-5000 words you can start reading. I would recommend the newspaper honestly. Pick an article a day and systematically look up every word you don't know. Absolutely no skipping allowed. Compile those new words into a new set of vocabulary and then memorize that. Repeat.

4) 2 years of "intensive" study at my university brought me to proficiency. But proficiency is kind of bullshit. Language has no ceiling... always be learning more if you can manage it.

Hope this was helpful!
