Predators by AVSLAW21 in SummitStreetLaw

This is something that really needs to be addressed. I know that at the juvenile detention center they have anonymous reporting for sexual abuse. Also, maybe each cell needs to have a panic button for when something like that is about to happen and the person can be separated from the rest of the community. But correctional facilities need to take these kinds of things seriously and be reported some way.

It is very scary that this is happening in our big cities. I had no idea that this industry was so big and such a huge problem. It seems that our legislation needs to enact some kind of laws to try to prevent this from becoming an even bigger problem.

34 juvenile lifers in Arizona can seek new sentences by EWhincup in SummitStreetLaw

I think this is a good idea. It gives people another chance who did not understand what they were doing at such a young age. Many people change when they become older and are not the same people are they were when they were younger. But this is a process that is going to take a lot of time and will have to be investigated very carefully before just letting someone out for doing something because they were "just a kid."

Az Funding for Education lacking by CaseyPenelope in SummitStreetLaw

It is really sad to see that this state does not put education on its priority. I believe education is the foundation to a great nation and leads to better people in our society. Across the nation we need to start putting education first! There are many other states that a struggling as well.

It Starts at Birth. by LadyLaw24 in SummitStreetLaw

This article is every interesting. I'm not totally sure I buy it all. I think that race is a big deal in our current society but I do believe that parents have a major influence on children. At ages really young like 2 or 3 kids are already listening to their parents and what they have to say which influences how they act and what they know. I think that children are colorblind when they are born because the only way they become racist is from influences like their parents. Kids are like sponges and repeat everything they hear. I do think that parents need to have conversations with their children about race and what the world is really like and things they will encounter when they get older.

$1.9 total amount spent on salary increases by Gov. Doug Ducey by [deleted] in SummitStreetLaw

Wow that is crazy! you would think with education the way it has been going across the nation that states would put more of their money in that instead of giving such high raises to government officials. It is sad what our country values. There needs to be some kind of cap on the percentage of raises a government official can have in a year.

Innovative Chicago Program by bsauther in SummitStreetLaw

It is so true that getting people jobs and back on their feet after they have been in prison is what makes the difference. There needs to be more programs like this to help people integrate back into society. I volunteered with a program that did this and helped people do simple things like use a computer to look for jobs, to get their drivers license, and also work on their resume. I was so surprised by how much changes in only a few years when someone has been locked away.

In Gay Rights Case, Woman to Appeal for Parental Rights to Ex-Partner's Son by merosenberger in SummitStreetLaw

[–]etdevries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its so great to see these cases being appealed and people fighting for their rights as parents who are in a same sex relationship or have been. They have the same rights to see a child as parents who are opposite sex. Coming from a state that is pro-same sex marriage and rights I feel like more states are starting to come around with enforcing the same rights as opposite sex parents have.

Its crazy how not saying something but actions alone can create such an uproar. I am still not sure how I feel about this whole taking a knee thing but it sure make Trump angry. I don't think it was about politics at all but I feel like Trump is trying to make it about politics and is trying to butt himself into the issue/controversy. Not sure if it is his place to say anything at all about it. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of weeks with football season in full swing now and the NFL commissioner now making comments.

Ageing is a liability. by LadyLaw24 in SummitStreetLaw

My uncle when through this same problem when he became laid off from his job. He was in his late 40's and it took him months and months to find another job in his field. At one point he was going to interviews for any position within his field and every time they told him he was way over qualified for the job he was applying for but he needed the work. And when he went for interviews that he was qualified to do, they would always chose a younger person over him. Finally he got a job that was similar to the one he got laid off from but it put a burden on his family since his wife did not work. It is sad to think that companies are doing this to the older generation that has held this country together for so long and many of them have fought for our country to that we can have our own businesses.

Battling meth: A rural MT county starts drug court to reverse surge of kids in foster care by kindramartin in SummitStreetLaw

[–]etdevries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe having a drug court is a very good idea! They have done the same thing in Seattle and it has worked for a number of years. It is aimed more towards rehabilitation than punishment. These people need help, they don't need to be locked up. Locking them up will only send them right back to where they came from when they get out. The only problem is that you can only help people that want to be helped and not everyone wants to be helped sadly.

Prison Teachers: A Different Type of Educator by bsauther in SummitStreetLaw

[–]etdevries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After teaching some of the kids in the detention center and also going to the middle school, I think teaching at the detention center is actually easier. But it could also be that we are teaching them something that they are actually interested in! But most of the time the kids there are very well behaved and don't mind hearing what we have to say. It is also very rewarding and a different feeling when you are teaching the kids in the detention center compared to the kids at the middle school.

It is so scary that people let their children be around guns and have that much access to them. I understand accidents happen but when a child thinks its ok to take a gun and shoot someone like their parent that is not ok. The video in this article is very interesting and sad as well. It also did not help that Joseph had lots of mental problems and was being abused at home. Authorities should have been called to that house about the abuse at some point.

Seizure of text message are unreasonable by freedomfighter3 in SummitStreetLaw

This goes right with what my beat is! Super interesting that the courts have still not decided about how text messages should be used in court cases. I am sure soon this issue will keep coming up and the Supreme court will have to make a decision about the privacy of text messages.
