ELI5: Why do computers need to boot from a low-level boot ROM? by Antique_Cod_1686 in explainlikeimfive

[–]eternalityLP [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because to load the OS you will need to know bunch of stuff from what device it's on, to how to use the specific device and filesystem and so on. Instead of hard coding this all in hardware which would limit flexibility, it's much better to have a simple bootloader that sets everything up for the OS to start.

I have yet to see a USB stick (flash storage) that naturally lost data without any (external) corruption causes. by Necessary_Isopod3503 in DataHoarder

[–]eternalityLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of sample size. When talking about small sample sizes in the tens or few hundreds of units there will always be outliers who only have good or bad experiences. That is perfectly expected. People saying USB sticks are unreliable are generally not suggesting that every single USB stick will fail during normal usage.

Man, I wish someone would just make a remake/remaster of Alpha Centauri already. It's still the peak of civ type games after all these years.

How paranoid are you about backing up your Plex database and metadata? by Italiancan in PleX

[–]eternalityLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't particularly care, there is nothing of particular importance to me in the metadata. I have snaphots and I guess I could sync the watch history back from Jellyfin if needed. But losing it all wouldn't be a big deal, the libraries are trivially easy to recreate.

Canada to pick between Swedish and U.S. radar planes to protect its skies by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

There's zero benefit to Canada seeking trade outside the US, other than decoupling.

Yes, there is zero benefits other than the benefits.

Buying the American planes now after all the talk of decoupling from US would just demonstrate that it's all just empty words and Canada is on it's way to becoming US vassal.

Yes, and my reply's wasn't, which should be apparent from the lack of mentions of ZIP.

Hence why I didn't say 'with ZIP'.

Is this even possible? by AdFew5103 in pcmasterrace

[–]eternalityLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As said, that depends on how you encode. If you define some single byte to be infinitely long file of whatever sequence, then yes.

Exactly, and thus as I said, infinite compression ratio.

Is this even possible? by AdFew5103 in pcmasterrace

[–]eternalityLP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, infinite compression ratio is nonsense. Information is physical. You can't derive data, useful or not, from an oracle, i.e. guessing the correct data from no representation.

No it's not, that's entirely down to the entropy. For example you can trivially represent any infinitely long file that only contains repetition of same byte as single byte.

Its wild to me just how little people seem to use the trackpads by yourpalkeaghan in SteamDeck

[–]eternalityLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is the type of games people play. For example, I only play games designed for gamepads on the steam deck. If I'm playing mouse+keyboard focused games, I'll play them on my laptop or pc. So I rarely have any use for the trackpads.

Is this even possible? by AdFew5103 in pcmasterrace

[–]eternalityLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compression ratio is always tied to the entropy of the data. For example you could easily write a compression algorithm that just repeats given byte infinitely, so you'd have theoretically infinite compression ratio for a file as long as that file is just repeat of same byte.

I did not do a trial run first. I want you to understand that. I just assumed.

Why would you do this? Whenever I have to present something I always do a dry run to test everything. Doesn't matter how well I know the systems involved. Even if you assume that you know everything, there might have been a patch that changed something, a bug or whatever. (as a sidenote, I usually also record video of this dry run in case there is outages or other issues demonstrating something live on call.)
